    3. I just want to share this genealogy joy with you. ___________________________________________________________________________________ I was looking through a box of old pictures in search of a picture my son had requested. I found a letter written by "Hazel" to my dad in 1987 from Fountain Valley, Calif. The post mark is Santa Ana, Ca. The envelope had a return address with full name. I looked up the family name (Childress) and address on yahoo people search and called the phone number. Tom Childress answered the phone. I told him I felt me must be related some how but did not know how. After several minutes of crasping for straws, I finally mentioned the name Crabtree. Yes, his grand mother and my grandmother Giddens were Crabtree sisters. We then proceeded to enjoy confirming other family members. Tom was raised in Dallas a remembers twice being at a family reunion at White Rock (near Clarksville) that I was at also. We both remember a great corn cob fight in the barn of my dad's aunt Flora Thompson. Tom is 57 years of age now (I am 61) Hazel and is 95 years old and is in fair condition. Tom & I exchanged e-mail addresses and I am sure we will be exchanging more memories. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx

    2. The pastor at a small church in Tate Co, MS, removed all of the tombstones so he could mow without having to go around them. Then he wound up throwing them in a ditch behind the church. I didn't believe this story until I looked for myself. Sure enough the stones were all broken up. Some were retrieved and put back but very few. I can''t imagine a congregation letting this happen but they did. Wanda

    2. What a sad situation...I wish it was less common, but I have heard way to many stories like this to think differently. My family actually has one like that on private property. While I understand that people can do what they want with their land it is sad to me that people have such disrepect for those before them. Of course, there are many stories of people saving these old cemeteries and restoring them. We also have a family cemetery on someone's ranch that they put up a fence and are in the process of replacing the broken or nonreadable markers at their cost. The family was going to do this and the owners said nope we will take care of it. I will have to say that I am very disappointed to hear of a pastor doing this though. Doesn't send much of a Christian message does it. I informed him of Cynthia's message about the tombstones. It seem there is a man that has a get-a-way home in Red River Co that replaces old markers with new ones and then just discards the old ones. Not sure if that is the same case as these 2 markers. Ben said he even concreted over one entire cemetery. Did not get all the details on this but Ben told me approx where it was. Sounds strange to me. Ben definitely does not agree with the man doing this unannounced, so to speak. We feel the man believes he is doing a very good thing at his own expense. I think he is doing a good thing, but he should contact the family to seek their wishes and to strongly consider the future of the old markers. They should be preserved if at all possible. Ben say his wife corrected his newspaper statement about a bed & breakfast in the old house. She understood the man to say he would have bedrooms upstairs (and maybe a kitchen area so some food could be fixed) Ben shook me this morning on the phone when he said he went by the house and it had been leveled. Almost the first marker I saw was Johnson. Sure enough, it was John R Johnson died Dec 1889 and wife D.J. Johnson. A few feet below them was another John R Johnson born Jan 1889. and a female beside him. I forget all the dates etc, but I took pictures that I will develop later. All their markers appear to be fairly new, definitely not 100 years old. The marker for wife was much larger that that of her husband. I honestly think I could spend hours or days in that (and other) cemeteries just reading it like a history book, trying to figure out the relation the people that are buried in the same area. The maiden names, son of or daughter of, mother. I still want to take time to piece this Johnson family together a little more. Was D.J. (Della I think) the wife or is it another etc. > Walking through the cemetery was names as Donoho, Dinwiddie (sp), DeMorse and several names I remember hearing in my youth. I notice there was charred wooden frames around the windows on the northwest corner of the house, telling of a fire inside the house in recent years. I saw none on the other windows. We have talked about it before. St John is in the process of restoring the house. He says he will put 4 office spaces on the first floor and bed & breakfast rooms on the second floor. The house was built in 1880 for Dr E.S. Look by Otto Glosnup to quote the paper. There were two tombstone found in an upstairs room. They are inscribed : Agnes P Henderson June 7, 1826-July 1, 1890 and John R Johnson Jan 10, 1843-Dec 6, 1889. If any one knows who these people are or where the tombstones really belong or how they came to be in the house, please contact the Times office at 427-5616. I have certainly glad to see this house being restored. The past owners of the house are: Look, Rigsby, Leila & Seth King, Byron Black Jr, Riddel, and now St John. This is the house with the extensive frill-work and decorative brackets under the eaves suggesting a Swiss Chalet. I stuck my camera into one of the broken small windows a few months ago and blindly snapped two pictures. The pictures came out fine, but just plain walls, nothing exciting. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx

    3. Mary, I doubt I still have the paper. I think I went to the old Clarksville Cemetery and took pictures or markers that had been put in their places, seems the surname was Johnson. I recall that some one just took it upon themselves to replace the markers. Maybe someone else on the list has a better memory of the article. I will see what I can come up with but I have 3 full days ahead of me starting tomorrow. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx p.s. Just never know what you will find in an old house. That is why I love to go look in the old houses. Sometimes the wall paper is there or remenants of what was probably very fashionable at the time. The foundations also give up some interesting artifacts. When people who did not trust the bank buried their money in oil paper, and put it in a hole in the ground near a tree, it was usually a tree they could see from their bed looking out the bedroom window at night. Most people eventually recovered what they had buried. Sometimes somethings would happen to the individuals and the money was never recovered. The roots of the trees grew over the jars.
