    1. Re: [TXREDRIV] Independence Co, Ark connection with some rambling tidbits.
    2. Jim Giddens
    3. Wanda, I can't help but notice common places we have. Independence Co. Ark points up in my Giddens genealogy from time to time. First,my grandmother Alice Caroline Giddens was a Crabtree born in Independence Co. Ark. on Feb 28, 1881. Her father was George Acorn Crabtree . My charts show my grandmother was christened at the Methodist Church at White Rock in Red River Co. I assume at small child but the years is not stated. George Acorn is buried at White Rock and Alice did marry my grandfather Francis Marion Giddens in Clarksville Nov. 3, 1900. With Geo Crabtree at White Rock & my Giddens at Concord, they lived within a mile or 2 of each other. I also have notes saying when the 4 sons of my GGGG GF Reuben Giddens started migrating from Vermilion Co, ILL to Red River Co Tex around 1830, they took had layovers in Mo and/or Ark to raise a crop. I can't put my hands on it at the moment but I recall in my notes indications at one of the sons may have stayed in Independence Co. Ark for a uncertain period of time and had children born there. (Reuben came later to RR Co about 1840 at the age of about 60 or older) I also have a Crabtree family chart showing a Crabtree marrying in 1934 in Durant, Ok but was born in Tx in 1912. He had a son (Jr) born in Colbert in 1940. This was sent to my dad by a Mary Crabtree of Colbert, Ok in 1992, trying to connect our two Crabtree. Her original question was about a Calvin (Calvary) Giddens ancestor. I called the Mary Crabtree in Colbert just last week, but Mary was in poor health and the family have not been much help as of yet. I did talk to her son Tom that was mentioned in the letter, but he had not information at this time. Well I better cut it off. 2. Jan my Great aunt was Mary Matilda Matlock Sturch Scott, her first husband was Andrew Jackson Sturch.he was the father of Josey, James Jefferson and William B.F. William and my grandfather married Reynolds sisters in Independence Co. AR in the latter part of 1880s. Making my father and William B. F.s children double cousins. I guess that does make us distant cousins. Williams only son taught and was dean at Southwestern in Durant, for many years, so was one of his sons. The other was Sheriff of Bryan Co. OK. I have been in contact with them, to no avail, they have promised but have not followed through. Thank you for answering my post. Wanda in OK

Also just received this week a wonderful memoir done in 1944 by F. G.'s brother, James Lee b. 1854, Marshall Co. MS., detailing their move to TX in 1859, arriving in Red River Co. 2/5/1860. John served in TX 29th Cavalry. Places mentioned include: Sivley Grove, Col. W. B. Aikin's plantation, P. H. Senter farm, Joe M. Sivley farm home. 2. Tom, I would like a copy of what you are going to send Jan if it has any of the Sturch and Sutherland data, especially if it is some of what Bonnie Bolding sent you. Wanda in OK avonnec@aol'com

    3. Jan, Good to hear from you again. As Jim said, I will be glad to give you any info I can related to our family. I have all the requested info and will give it to you direct, off the list , unless there is a member/members who would like to share in it also. Jim and I had a really great day yesterday. Seems we never stop talking when we are on one of our "Whirlwind Tours". I wish you and everyone on the list could have been with us!! We decided that next time we will take our fishing gear to Crystal Lake. There were a couple of men who were having a good time catching some nice hybrid bass. All Jim and I did was watch and eat some good, hot donuts that we had bought earlier at Clarksville. WE actually bought enough (2 doz.) for the ladies at the court house but they were not open on sat. so Jim and I had a bunch of donuts to eat. You all should have seen us blazing a trail to my GGGG Grandfather Wm. Becknell's grave. JIm said he could tell I had some of the Pioneer Spirit in me, also. WE were going to place flowers on his grave but the florists were all closed. April 25 was the 147th anniversary of Becknell's death. I thought it would be good to visit his grave. Jim and I recounted his history while standing at his grave. It is hard to look at his stone that the state put there to honor him and see the wrong death date on it and look around at the condition of the cemetery and think how we fail to honor this man who was such an influence on our states history as well as how he helped start the western expansion of our nation...... enough said. Talk to you in a minute, Jan Tom Watson Heath, TX ( Watson, Cornett, Crosby, Becknell, Rogers, McAllister, Sturch, Southerland, Horne, Mercer, Fuller) >From: "Jim Giddens" <jimg@cox-internet.com> >Reply-To: TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com >To: TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] I'm one of the new subscribers >Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2003 08:23:19 -0500 > >Jan, I am sure Tom Watson will be helping you soon. 3. Do you have the book Red River Recollections? There are several articles in there on this Cooper family. And there are a few cemetery records in the Dale's book.
