List, A few weeks back Sharon Black casually mentioned a book, "Mary Donoho New First Woman On The Santa Fe Trail". Well, I bought it and agree with her , "it is a very interesting book". It being written about a woman, at first , didn't get me too excited, but I respect Sharon's opinion and therefore bought one on E-Bay. I have found this little book just full of interesting facts, that are well document, about The life of one of the most influential ladies of Red River County. The book tells us a lot about what Clarksville was like in the early 1800s. It also tells us about the people who lived there. I alluded to how I was hesitant to get the book because it was about a woman. Well, I should have learned my lesson by now. In genealogy we often over look the women, probably due to most of the records being easier to follow, I once thought, from the men's name. Seems to me;however, that when I do start following the women ( I would say chasing but I stopped doing that a long time ago) I find treasures of information. I would have never known about my relationship to Capt, William Becknell if I had not researched my Grandmother Cornett's family. You can get the book on E-Bay; However, I bought a few copies at the Clarksville News office last week at about 1/4 the price I paid on E-Bay. What's more important, I left a little money in Red River County. Sorry for the ramblin'. WHERE IS SHARON?? Drew & all, I have talked to the State Hwy Dept in Clarksville about putting up signs with the names of the creeks in RR Co, but was told the county was to tight on money. They said it was pretty expensive to maintain the signs. I have a map that specify shows and names all the creeks in the county. It adds to the interest when driving the back roads. Many have little if any water in them during the dry times. Also, the location of the long gone Pecan Point is on private land of the large Chapman Ranch and accessible by public road, probably no road at all. The Pecan Bayou crosses Hwy 37 north of Clarksville, just below Dimple Hill. Pecan Bayou is also the north border of the original Giddens land grant back in the 1830s. This is about 6 miles east of Hwy 37. I am on my way the Chamber in Clarksville this a.m. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx ----- Original Message ----- From: "Drew Slate" <drew-slate@charter.net> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 02, 2003 11:17 PM Subject: RE: [TXREDRIV] Pecan Gap & Jones > Jim, > > The only Texas Almanac I have is the 2000-2001 edition. Thanks Drew, My main points was to ad credibility to the age of the present day Pecan Gap which I have visited a couple of time. I even found some Giddens (distant cousins) buried in the Pecan Gap Cemetery. A very months ago when Carrie mentioned the date on a sign at Pecan Gap (where she lives) states a date of 1892, I guess I was puzzled by Pecan Gap being that old. This note I found may give credit to that statement. However I am wondering in this case if my dad typed in Pecan Gap instead of Pecan Point by mistake. I am well aware of Pecan Point that was a community/town on the Red River at a point in the northeast corner of the county on the Red River. Pecan Point is on a couple of maps I have copies of back in the early 1800s drawn by Stephen F Austin. It is also mentioned prominently in the Red River Dust book as a early ferry crossing and at main port for the steamboats. Pecan Gap is close to the Sulphur River and I am sure the fine people of Pecan Gap would not put up such a sign without documentation. I was just surprised at the age of Pecan Gap. I did take a very pictures of some old houses in Pecan Gap but they were not that old. Also, Pecan Gap is the home town of a Avery friend of my Gene Weaver that recently saw his name put on the new gym in Avery. He and his brother Floyd Weaver both went to Paris Junior College about the time I did in 1960. Floyd pitched a little pro baseball. I saw him on TV once with the Houston Astros. Well, I go to rambling again. I am up late preparing my Giddens information (in a rush) for the Red River County Hall of Fame meeting in Clarksville in the morning. Jim, The only Texas Almanac I have is the 2000-2001 edition. I looked through the index of cities and towns. They list towns that don't exist anymore also. There is only one Pecan Point listed and it is listed in Red River, but shows to not exist anymore. There is only one Pecan Gap listed. It shows being in Delta/Fannin Counties and a population of 260 up from 245 in 1990. It also shows to have a Post Office. Interesting that there is only one reference to a Pecan Bayou in the Water Resources section. It is part of the Colorado River and that would be more in north central Texas. Although, looking at the Red River County map, it clearly shows the Pecan Bayou that is in the county. There are two other bodies of water that it shows connecting up with Pecan Bayou, Denwiddie Bayou and Blanton Creek. The source shows a little southeast of Woodland and it empties into the Red River at the TX/LA border. Reading through the Red River section of the Water Resources though turns up more of what you read on your sheet. The section is quite large, but I will copy the section that pertains to what you have written. It reads as follows: "A number of important gateways into Texas from the North were established along the stream such as Pecan Point and Jonesborough in Red River County, Colbert's Ferry and Preston in Grayson County and later, Doan's Store Crossing in Wilbarger County." This might very well be the same sentence that your dad had written down. Hope this helps... Drew BTW - A great place to find the old copies of the Texas Almanac is at Half-Price Bookstores. Yes! That was me. If I remember correctly, Pecan Gap was established circa 1829. Don't know why or where a ferry was though...maybe the river's were closer to here back then! I am reading a copy of a page in Texas Almanac 1964-65. Pecan Gap & Jonesboro on the Red River are mentioned in the same sentence stating they were "other settlements and ferry points". I think is was Carrie that told of a sing at Pecan Gap state a date of the early 1800s. I don't remember the year. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx
The Hall of Fame Committee for Red River County is meeting tomorrow (Saturday) at 9:30 a.m. at the Red River Chamber of Commerce building on the square in Clarksville. This is for pioneer families of the county and also I think there is also a separate slot for the 1900s. Last year was the first year. The second annual Hall of Fame induction will be Oct 24 during the RR Co Historical Bazaar. Anyone has any question or interest, you may call Shirley Anderson , 903-427-7131. I understand you don't have to have a "polished" presentation for tomorrow, but you do need to get the name of your family in the pot. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx p.s. I too am not fully ready, but I read it in this weeks Clarksville Times.

Joyce, thank you so much for your wonderful e-mail. I am so sorry for your loss also. And like you, I want to remember all the good things and times with James. It seems that for the last few days that every where I have been all people want to talk about is the accident and how it happened. I finally told someone that I simply could not handle that any more---it was fine to talk about our memories of James, but please let's talk about the happy times we had with him and his deep love for his children, but not about the accident that took him from us. Sorry, guess I just had to "vent" to someone. Thank you again for your support. Drew---thank you so much for your words of support. I hope you do sit back and think because when you are that young you don't; even at my age (56) I don't stop and think about something like this. I wish my son had because insurance and a will would have made things much easier in the long run for the children he left behind. But I know that we don't think about these things enough. Thank you again for you support. It means all the world to me to have the support of others at this time. William and my grandfather married Reynolds sisters in Independence Co. AR in the latter part of 1880s. Making my father and William B. F.s children double cousins. I guess that does make us distant cousins. Williams only son taught and was dean at Southwestern in Durant, for many years, so was one of his sons. The other was Sheriff of Bryan Co. OK. I have been in contact with them, to no avail, they have promised but have not followed through. Thank you for answering my post.
