I also have a connection to this Rogers family the exact same way. My GUncle William Hubbard Love married Laura Viola Bagwell. She is Becknell's GGranddaughter through Mary Jane's marriage to John Rogers. Laura's mother was their daughter. I have just starting putting all of this together and have been in contact with a few Becknell researchers. It is really on for my personal information since there is no blood relation it is all through marriage. I will put together the line when I get home tonight and see if there is a connection another way between us. Jim. The Rogers in Ky could be a connection. My John K. Rogers was originaly from Ky. He later moved to Missouri where he married Capt. Becknell's first child, Mary Jane Becknell. He came to TX with the group that came with Becknell in 1835. He was in the Red River Blues militia that Becknell commanded in the Texas war for Inependence, for wich he recieved a headright. I would like to study this possibility more. Thanks Jim. Tom, I know you said you have a Rogers connection and I know this is a long shot. I see in my notes that my GGGG GF Reuben Giddens bought half of a track of John Rogers land in Floyd Co, Ky. Apr 24, 1817. Book A, pg 418. This was 100 acres on Johns Creeks, a branch of Sandy River. I notice these from my notes I took in Ky 4 years ago. Also bought 100 acres for Benjamin Pearce and Joseph Smith Baisden, all on Johns Creek. Good night all, Jim Giddens Paris, Tx
Diane, Did I miss the original Bledsoe question? Anyway have I told you I have a marriage connection the a Bledsoe name in my family. (long pause). I just found it in my Gillie Woods Quick notes taken at Madras a year or 2 ago. Her and her brother Bill Woods parents are Marshall Lee Woods and Jessie Joe Bledsoe Woods (female of course). Jessie Joe's parents were Joe Bledsoe & Mary Barnett Bledsoe. I am connect to the Barnetts, so I guess that connects me to the Bledsoe. I think some there are Bedsore graves at the Madras Cemetery. Gillie and Bill still live at Madras about half a mile apart. I need the marriage book, volume and page number for the following couple to complete my DAR application any help would be greatly appreciated. Walter William Bledsoe and Nora Alcie McCarley married 31 Jan 1883 Red RiverCo., TX. Thank You Diane Miller
Ginger, I am all smiles that I could help. It is great that I talked to Mr West instead of walking through the cemetery as some of the others wanted me to. I have walked the cemetery several times. I pulled up a chair under a big tree and keep asking him questions when he would stop. We talked about 30 minutes, just me and him, or him and I, or him and me. Where is that school room. It makes since to me. If a child was not smart enough, the could just let it pass over their head (ears), but if they were smart as your mother was, the would be open to learn much more from the older classes. I often wondered how several classes could be taught in one room. I still don't understand, but your input helps. The land in question is before the Macedonia-Siloam Church. There is a curve to the west. The land to the east of that curve was where he was told there was an old school. Thanks for clearing up that mystery! Ginger Annona, TX
Jim I remember Mom saying she loved the one room school's. She could finish her assignment and participate in the other classes. She found it made her higher grades so much easier and she felt more grown-up. When she got in a school that had separate rooms for the grades her school work was much harder and the classes were much longer. She didn't think she learned more in the seperate classes, but she must have. Ginger, I recall as you do about no child should have to walk no more than 3 miles to a school. The man told me the first school was where the Cherry (Stones Chapel) Cemetery is now. I under stood him to be saying a one room school was started in the old Cherry Church (one room) on the central east side of the land next to the fence and a newer church building had been built on the other side of the land. He said later a man bought some land across the road and about 1/2 mile to the east and gave about 10 acres of it for a school and here they built a new two room Cherry school that had a ballfield etc. The land was just past (east) of the old Grant house across a off road going to Macedonia-Siloam (sp) Cemetery. My dad also told me that they live across the road (north side) from the cemetery and up the hill to the east a little ways. He father was teaching at the school and must have lived in the area. My dad never talked to me about the location of the school, I always assumed in was on the same lot as the church. I do not know what year the new school was built. May my grandfather had moved and teaching at Hopewell by that time. I know he was teaching at Cherry there in 1912 but was at Hopewell by 1917. I hope this helps you. Got to got to work now in Sulphur Springs at Eckerds all day. Opps, I just noticed this is headed for the complete list, but I will let it go. Jim, I would very much like more information on the exact location of the Cherry School. My brother-in-laws' cabin (which we use like it was our own) is located in the woods in the Cherry area. I guess this was always in the back of my mind somewhere, or maybe not. But the area of what is Red River county today was inside the Louisiana purchase 1803. I see why the U.S. called it Miller County, Ark. Also the U.S. bought it of course from France and maybe Mexico did not agree and continued to claim to the Red River. The line cuts off the northeast corner of Texas. I just went to Yahoo and typed in Louisiana Purchase Map, and the first selection has a map that is very clear on the area. I noticed this first when I was watching the Louisiana Purchase on the History Channel a few night ago. Ok, I will give it a rest, I will be working a little extra this week. Jim Giddens Paris,Tx
Some one told me, not to long ago that the hump on the top from of the Alamo was not original, that it was added later for the tourist, movies etc. I didn't want to believe that but I said nothing, but I thought then I remembered seeing a old picture of it. I am now looking at the picture taken in 1868 and it does have the hump. I that 3 covered wagon's hitched to teams and the buildings on the side that are not the same structure as today. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx p.s. I had a good day Saturday at the Hall of Fame meeting and at the Stones Chapel Cemetery Assn. meeting. About 50 or more people at the cemetery including Cynthia Samples and her husband. John Grant West, 87, was there from Louisiana. He live there at Cherry as boy and young man. He was describing to me where the Cherry School was located, that my Grandfather Marion Giddens taught for a few years around 1912 when my dad baby sister died and was the first Giddens buried at Stones Chapel because everyone was sick and the weather was to bad to go to Concord. Also Cynthia and I talked to a couple of the locals that seemed interested in joining our board.
