Jim, What a wonderful site to see is Arlington National Cemetery. I was there in 1984. I have wanted to go back many times since and will some day. It is a beautiful place with such a history. I can remember standing at JFK's burial site, touring my hero's home, Robert E. Lee, and standing in complete silence as the changing of the guard took place. What a wonderful day. Since then I have done more research on the cemetery and there are so many more burials and monuments that I would love to see. I am surprised to hear they didn't tell a little of the reason why it is a cemetery today. That story in itself is quite a piece of history. There is a segment in Ken Burns' Civil War documentary that tells the story in a some detail. One man's anger and revenge turned into the greatest memorial in America's history, IMHO. I have also been to the fairly new D/FW National Cemetery. We buried my uncle Garth Wallace Slate, a Bagwell native and former WWII POW, there last spring. It is not quite the feel of Arlington, but it is beginning to take it's own personality and shape. I am proud to say I have family buried there. Hope everyone is safe and had a wonderful weekend... Yesterday I had the honor of attending a ceremony to honor my gggg grandfather Benjamin Clark who is buried in the Clarksville Cemetery. The following is the article which appeared in The Paris News to tell of the ceremony. The Paris News http://www.theparisnews.com Copyright © 2003 The Paris News Clarksville Revolutionary War hero honored By John Henderson The Paris News Published May 25, 2003 CLARKSVILLE - Benjamin Clark's grave in Clarksville Cemetery now has a bronze Maltese cross with the emblem of the Sons of the American Revolution. Clark, who died in 1838, was formally recognized by the group as an American Revolutionary War veteran Saturday. He died just five years after his son, James Clark, founded Clarksville in Red River County, and a year after it was incorporated as a city under the Republic of Texas. Mike Everheart, president of the Tyler chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, said the dedication was part of the society's mission to recognize veterans. "It's so amazing to be standing over the grave of an American Revolutionary War soldier," Everheart said. "We're so far from the actual wars that were fought." Of the 50 veterans of the American Revolutionary War believed to have died and be buried in Texas, only 19 of them have grave markers in recognizable condition, Everheart said. Benjamin Clark's gravestone was replaced in the 1930s, said his descendant Jim Clark, a director of the Red River County Historical Society, and the sixth descendant of Benjamin Clark to be named James or Jim. That was around the time Benjamin Clark's son James, who was a Texas Revolutionary War veteran and is buried beside his father, had his gravestone replaced by the Texas Historical Commission. James Clark's son, also named James, was a captain in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and is buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Clarksville. Jim Clark said it's unusual that three generations of the same family that fought in those three wars would be buried in the same city. Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution members led pledges to the American and Texas flags, unveiled the cross marker and put a wreath on display above Clark's grave. Tom Clark, Jim Clark's cousin from Tulsa, Okla., read a biography of his ancestor. Benjamin Clark was born in 1758 in North Carolina, where he fought as part of the local militia in the battle of Cape Fear River and rose to the rank of quartermaster sergeant. He later moved his family to Tennessee, Kentucky, and then to Arkansas, where he founded one of the first settlements in the territory. He later moved to Clarksville, which his son established. Father and son died within a few months of each other, and were buried side-by-side in Clarksville Cemetery. Jeff Dunn of Dallas, whose wife, Lea, is a great-great-great-granddaughter of Benjamin Clark, said at the time Clark came to the area, Red River County was in dispute between the Mexican and American governments. It wasn't until after the war for Texas' independence, from 1835 to 1836, that Texas was declared an independent republic. Everheart said the standard design for the grave markers has the cross emblem screwed onto a stake which is driven into the ground. To deter defacement of Clark's grave, he had the emblem inlaid in granite, he said.
Today (Sunday) Paris News has a load of old communities information for Lamar & Red River Counties and also a couple of good stories of "Clarksville Turning it Around". Most of it is not on the website. The news stated the community information came from the Handbook on Texas History On-Line. It is a 32 page section of the paper titled "Valley Visions-Working Together". The article on Benjamin Clark (Amer Rev. War) is on the website at www.theparisnewscom It is good to see positive news in the Paris News about Clarksville. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx

In yesterday's Paris news there was an article about a ceremony scheduled for 2pm Saturday (today) in Clarksville Cemetery, honoring Benjamin Clark, Revolutionary War Veteran. This article gives some biographical information and can be viewed online at http://www.theparisnews.com/story.lasso?wcd=6777 This brings another question I have asked before. Were there any other Rev War Soldiers who made it to Red River County? If anybody knows about any I would like to hear about them. At a discussion at the Geneology Society Christmas party, there were several people who believed there were three, but could not remember names. If there were others I would like to do some research and find out more about them. Cynthia Samples Paris, Texas
To a quiet board: (not genealogy) Something we have discussed before is the interesting life of older people that we are not aware of. Below is the obit of a 80 year old man that I have filled prescriptions for several times but his prescriptions were mostly delivered and I don't remember if I ever talked face to face with him. He lived here in Paris, Tx and I read his obit because I work with and go to church with one of his step-daughters. I was shocked to read his WW II record as a pilot that received 5 combat battle stars and the Distinguished Flying Cross Metal and more. I wish I had talked to this man more. Another reason to respect your elders, you never know just where they have been what they have done. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx Paris News Obituaries Obituaries for May 23, 2003 Obituaries published in The Paris News: Norman A. Blower Norman A. Blower, 80, of Paris died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, in Dubuis Hospital in Paris. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 24, in Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Byron Howard officiating. Gene Roden's Sons Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements. The family has invited family and friends to the Blower residence following the services. He was born June 16, 1922, in Polk County, Fla. He married Norma Jane Meeks on Aug. 18, 1978, in Paris. He was a veteran of World War II serving as a pilot with the 5th Wing of the 15th Air Force, 301st Bombing Group. From 1943-1945 his bomb group was credited with the 96 percent destruction of Hitler's Plosti Oil Fields and the supporting refineries in and around Vienna, Austria. They were significant for stopping Hitler's oil supply at the cost of almost 100 percent sustained losses. He was awarded five combat battle stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. The 301st was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation three times by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and he had achieved the rank of captain at the time of his honorable discharge. He was an architect and an Episcopalian. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jane Blower on Feb. 25, 2002. Survivors include his son, John Kevin Blower of Las Vegas, Nev.; four stepchildren, Shawna Blake and husband, Wade, of Powderly, Susan Villarreal and husband, Raul, of Richmond, Brenda Hardy and husband, Stan, of Ozwakie, Kan. and Jimmy Gann and wife, Kathy, of Paris; and grandchildren, Laura, Rachel, Daniel, Jason, Katrina, Fillip, Bradley, Abbey and Gracie.
I thought I would share this everyone since we talked a little about this type of research a short time ago. I didn't know this, so maybe it will be of help to some others as well. This comes from a newsletter put out by Ancestry.com... Native American Genealogy Resources Native American genealogy has long been considered difficult, if not impossible, to trace. One of the biggest obstacles in this research is the "researcher" themselves. They don't know where to go or where to begin. One of the best sources for all Indian research is the Federal Census. In 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 the last roll of microfilm for each state that had a Native American population contained an Indian population schedule. These schedules contain information such as degree of blood and tribal enrollment of the parents along with the other information that is normally given with that year of census. Oklahoma was called Indian Territory until becoming a state in 1907. The 1900 Federal Census for "Oklahoma" is listed two ways, by Oklahoma, the last roll of microfilm is T623 roll-1353 contains the Indian population schedule. It is also listed under Indian territory as T623 roll 1843-1854 for the different Indian nations. These rolls will differ in that they will have all those that are living within the Indian nations, not just Indians. Good luck in your research, Drew Slate Fort Worth, Tx
I was wondering how you are connected to the Bond/Mauldins. My husband's grandmother was Lillie Bond who married William Mauldin. Mary, Thanks for your information. I am connected through Beular (Beulah) Bond. She is my great-great grandmother and is Lillie's sister. Beulah's son Anderson Loftin is my great-grandpa. Hello all, I need some help. I am looking for any information on my great-great grandmother Beulah Bond. As far as we know, she married Flemming Loftin around 1914. She had a son Anderson Eli Loftin in 1915 and another son Carl in 1916-1917? in which she died during childbirth. From then on Flemming left the boys to their mother's sister and he remarried another woman named Rosa and had more children. Here is my question: Can anyone locate Beulah Bond-Loftin in any of the local cemeteries? I have seen through the message boards what you all are capable of doing and since I am in San Diego, my information is limited until I can make a trip out there. Also, if anyone has any information about Flemming Loftin that would be appreciated as well. I have found him in the 1920 census in Red River, but in 1930 his second wife Rosa is married to someone else and Flemming is gone. I do not know if he died or left. Thanks in advance, Chrissy Roth
Someone on the site was inquiring about a resident of the "Petros, Tn" Cemetery. I have borrowed a book titled "Petros, a Journey Back" By Nellie Shipwash which is about the people and history the community and it list the residents of the New Petros Cemetery as well as the old Petros Cemetery. Also the Estes Cemetery in Coalfield, Tn. I will be able to do Look-ups on these if anyone needs the information. The information is up to August 1974 Will be happy to help anyone here in our area.
Thanks Jim, I checked the Paris News and read the obit after we got back from Clarksville tonight. It was also supposed to be in the Longview paper today but wasn't so should be tomorrow. It is a long way from Longview to Clarksville but we had a good visit with the family and they were surprised to see several friends from Longview. They're good people. Thanks again, Carol Harris jimg@cox-internet.com writes: > The obit for Jim Durham is now at www.theparisnews.com > Jim G > >
