Donna, There will be several if not many interested in helping you with what we know. There is one library in Clarksville, north of the square 2 blocks. Maybe someone else can give you there hours, but it is probably on the county rootsweb site. The old courthouse is undergoing restoration and the records are at the annex on the northwest corner of the square. You may want to visit the C of C on the south end of the east side of the square and visit with Becky Hale at the tourist center in the middle of the north side of the square. There are other places and people of interest also that could be helpful. If you need and directions to any cemeteries, Myself and others I can probably help you. There will be some small fees for photocopies etc. of maybe $1 each. The RRCo Genealogy society is collection and microfilming the old newspapers of the county. Also the Paris Junior College Library in Paris has microfilm of much the old Northern Standard paper and of the Paris News. I am not sure about the Clarksville Times at PJC. Also you may want to share with us the family names and/or cemeteries, you will get good response if we have it. I am always curious as to what area people live in. Will you share that? Hi Everyone, I am planning a trip up to Red River County week after next. I will be doing some courthouse research as well as going to the libraries and visiting Cemeteries. Can anyone who has been there tell me what to expect? Such as fee's for copies. Which libraries have the best records. Where I can find the newspapers for obituaries, should I call ahead, etc.... Any help would be appreciated!!!! Donna Merrill dmerrill3@mindspring.com
I remember Valirie Mann as a very nice woman that worked in the dry goods end of Medford's Store when we were there in the 70's. I am trying to clear my memory so I could very well be wrong, but seems I recall her husband either dying earlier in the war or a crash and being related to the Medford family. Again, this may not be right so I would appreciate any clarification on this. I think the New Avery Library and Historical Center will be named "Avery Valirie Mann Library" or something like this. They want to honor Mrs Mann for all her work collecting historical data and publishing it in the DeKalb News and of course she is from Avery. Eddie Robinson Kingston, Tn
Carrie there's nothing I'd like better but I wonder if I can make it, health wise. The only one I've met is Jim Giddens and he's said he will be there, but I'm sure he's tired of seeing me. It seem's that we meet at funeral's that were somewhat unexpected. I'm sure both of my brother's will be there(They Participated in Rodeos all their life Bulldoging or Steer Wrestling, They got too old for that and baby brother, Kelly, couldn't completely give it up and now is in Steer Roping. They probably have to help him on and off his horse.)There are so many I would like to see and have a picture of. I'm always talking to my Wife about my friends on the net and she says I sure have a lot of girl friends. She doesn't comment when I talk about Tom, Drew, John, Ralph, or Sam or other's. I'll try as I have to send several boxes of books and can save some money by carrying them. I've decided to give them my photo's and articles on our putting two Monkeys (SAM & MISS SAM)into Space before they would let John Glenn ride that rocket off Wallops Island. All I can say now is I'll try. Eddie Robinson Kingston, Tn At 07:06 AM 6/6/03 -0500, you wrote: >Eddie, are you going to be there? I think you'd be a bigger attraction >for the folks on this board! WW II Vet: Marvin Nichols, Pfc, son of Mr M.C. Nichols of Detroit. Attended Liberty School. Entered Army in 1941 Served in ETO. The picture of him in his uniform has a woman on each side of him and a tall white house in the background. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx p.s. Liberty Cemetery is east of Detroit about 2 miles.
That's a little funny. The building across from the Masonic lodge is were I moved the pharmacy. Before I went into it, Damon Phelps had a cafe in it. It put carpet in the building which I thought was a big thing. The hanging tree for the Frontier Days is just across the street to the south (on the corner). Allen - I have not done any research in a while, but my Burns line connects to you. William B. Burns was my great-great grandfather. I descend from Carroll Edward Rogers, son of Victoria Miniver Burns, daughter of Andrew Jackson Burns, son of William. I have most of the information you have, but did not have the last name of Margaret (Joe Anderson's wife) as Seyeles. I had Sickles, but do not think I had anything to back it up - just word of mouth of family. My great great grandfather, Andrew Jackson Burns was married to Annie Anderson. Andrew, most commonly known as "Jack" Burns and his brother, Henry Eugene Burns, married sisters - Annie and May Anderson. I am gonna throw mine in here too. Maybe just giving a little information might help. I have never been able to go too far. The date I can get back the most is the 1880 census, and they have that wrong. It was Samuel Burns all right, but his bride is labeled as Mary, her name was Mary Harriet, and most only knew her as Hattie. But her birthday was about correct, and having born in MS. Samuel Burns was born in MO about 1853, but I could nver ever prove that. I suspect he was born in LA and taken as an infant to MO. But no proof so I can't swear to it. The 1880 census list son William. This is weird. The only son I knew about was Pete, my grandmother's brother. I supose one sibling could have died early. There was another girl, supposed to be spelled Mollie Burns. They were living in Cass co, TX in this 1880 census. I wish I could come to Red River to do some exploring. My granny married John Floyd Batchelor in RR in 1906. But her father had tried to make her marry some really older man before that. I am not sure if she ever got that marriage annulled! Her nickname was Tiney Burns and she always went by Tiney. They didn't know her birthdate so she made one up for Social Security. Her real name was Lementine Burns. She was named after an aunt Lementine Dean. Her sister Mollie Burns was married in RR county, and sister Zona in nearby Bowie, brother Pete in McUrtain co, OK I believe. He is buried in Tom, OK. My grandmother had several infants born and died early in RR county. About that book about 1890, I would dearly LOVE to see one. I can hope to order one. If I could only find something on the 1890's, I could maybe find more on my Burns/Dean lines. Thanks and many blessings to you all. Allen, I found an Isaac Burns in the 1850 census in Titus County. His wife is Mary and there are two children, John and Sarah. The ages and birth locations are as follows: Isaac - 30 - SC Mary - 26 - AL John - 4 - Tx Sarah - 1 - Tx It doesn't list a town or district though. I will send you a jpeg of it if you want. Thanks, Drew Slate Fort Worth, Tx -----Original Message----- From: Allen Lawrence [mailto:awl1957@hotmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, June 04, 2003 4:50 PM To: TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TXREDRIV] Burns Family Hi list, I have written in the past looking for my great grand father Sam Patton Lawrence.
