    3. Jim, Thanks! I knew that I would probably find some good responses from this list. I've only been on the list for about 3 weeks but I have discovered there are some mighty knowledgeable folks on here. I hope that this picture can benefit more than just me. Who knows who might find someone in there that they hadn't had a chance to have a picture of before. It's my pleasure to share and I will probably post a couple more later, I just don't want to overwhelm anyone! Thanks, Ken Spangler Paris, Texas Jim Giddens <jimg@cox-internet.com> wrote: Ken I sent the picture to my the Clarksville Class of 59 and also to the class of 60 to see if they could help. 3. Jim, My grandmother's maiden name is Ora Elizabeth Gamble. She married Dave Franklin Spangler around 1925 in Clarksville. The connection to Sherry would be that they were residing around that area in the 1930s or thereabout because my aunt, Martha Jo Spangler, was born in Sherry in 1930. I am suspecting that she might have kept this picture because of one of her children are in it. I am thinking that the bottom row, 4th from the right looks similar to my aunt -- Ora Irene Spangler, but I am not sure. If that were true, then my dad would be in it too but I don't recognize any that look similar to him. He and Irene were twins and were born in 1928. I wish I had more to go on. I just saw it said "Sherry School" on the back and thought I would post it and see what I could find out. Thanks, Ken Spangler Paris, Texas Jim Giddens <jimg@cox-internet.com> wrote: Someone has probably replied already, I just got in, but. Sherry is a old community about 4 miles south of Clarksville on the "old" Bogata highway FM 909. Cherry is a old community north of Clarksville about 4 miles and east of Hwy 37 on FM 2283 about 2 miles where Stones Chapel Cemetery is. There was a school at Cherry and I assume there was a school at Sherry. It has always been confusing to a lot of people including me. Jim Giddens Paris, p.s. Ken what was your mother's maiden name? I was raised in Clarksville. Maybe some of us will know her or the family. Or maybe she only has the picture and did not go to school there. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Moore" To: Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 6:33 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Old School Picture from Sherry, Texas. > Ken: > In what Red River County community is Sherry School located. > Thanks: > > Bob Moore in MS > moor4933@bellsouth.net > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Kenneth Spangler" > To: > Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 5:49 PM > Subject: [TXREDRIV] Old School Picture from Sherry, Texas. > > > > Hi all, > > > > I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in an old school > picture I found last night. 3. Tom, I'm not sure but I do have a connection to a Cornett. My grandfather's brother, James Nathan Spangler, was married to a Mary Hans Cornett. I haven't gotten any paperwork to confirm this but I have gotten it from my cousin's research. James married Mary 12-25-1898. Don't know if this fits or not. I'm not sure of an Ed Spangler. My father was David Isaac Spangler and my grandfather is Dave Franklin Spangler. My great-grandfather would be James Isaic Spangler. If you see anything that fits, just give me a holler and we'll see what we can do for each other. 3. Bob, I'm not sure how correct I am (I'm only 40) but I believe Sherry was a little community about 8 miles south of Clarksville. My family was apparantly around that area because my aunt Martha Jo Spangler was born there in 1930. If I am mistaken then I am sure someone could straighten me out. 3. Goodness, I did not think that I would get help with my travel plans:) I did not even think about flying into Tulsa or Shreveport. Cost is not an issue as my husband flys for Delta. It is only once I get somewhere that the expense becomes a problem. I will get out my map and figure out which airport is closer if I decide not to drive. Since my MORRISes were from Montgomery Co., TN I am thinking about driving to Clarksville, TN. and trying to follow their migration trail since I know that they went through Shreveport as they stopped to have my grt grandmother there along the way. (Interesting note here that several families left Clarksville, TN which is on the confluence of the Cumberland and Red River and moved to Clarksville, Tx on the Red River!) Anyway - thanks for the suggestions. Charmaine

    3. The Red River Genealogy Society Web site has a short guide to research--library hours, location, etc. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txrrcgs There is also a list of newspapers known to exist. Some of these listed as "being microfilmed" now may be completed and in the library. The Genealogy Society has worked very hard to obtain all the existing papers and get them microfilmed, but many no longer exist. The Microfilm Reader in the library does not have the ability to make copies, but hopefully someday that will change. The Red River GenWeb site has a list of ALL KNOWN cemeteries in the county and their locations, thanks to Lawrence and Sue Dale. Maps are available at Becky Hale's shop and the Chamber of Commerce. 3. Jim, Thanks so much. Newspaper research is slow, as far as obits, if you know the date and the film boxes are labeled you shouldn;t have a problem finding it if there was one. Hopefully I will hear from Sharon on this matter. I may be looking at a dead end as far as the newspapers but I will get tot the courthouse for deed, marriages and other records. Thanks Again!!!!! 3. The Northern Standard ran from 1842 to past 1874. Then maybe a gap until 1879 and then close about 1887 after the death of Charles DeMorse. I to plan to search the Standard microfilm at PJC for my GGGG GF Reuben Giddens that died in 1853 or 1854. Only once have I looked at the microfilm and got discouraged because of not knowing just how to look for it in a speedy matter. I guess I will go back when I have more time and just make a day or more searching. The obit may not even be there. I do not know what the norm was in those years. There were other newspapers that appeared from time to time in the county but I know almost nothing about them. 3. Hi Jim, Thank you for your kind reply! The family I am researching is William Columbus CUNNINGHAM md. 1) Martha "Mattie" D. CROFT, she died in Red River Co. and is buried at Clarksville Cemtery. William C. CUNNINGHAM married 2) Sarah Angeline DUCKETT in Red River Co., TX on 11 Mar 1877. I found them on the tax records in 1874 in Red River Co. They were listed on the 1880 Census of Dallas Co., TX. They moved around between Red River, Dallas, and Upshur Counties, TX. I am hoping the newspapers will go back to the 1870's but usually if there is a mention of a death, it is small. William C. CUNNINGHAM supposedly died in Red River Co. 14 Aug 1898 but I have been unable to find any proof of that. Perhaps maybe an obituary but as far as I know, he is not mentioned in any cemetery record for the county. Thanks so much for your reply and interest in my family!
