Hello, My youngest son, Cory, is adopted. In Colorado, an adopted child is, also, given the same rights as birth children. They are given revised birth certificates with the adoptive parents listed as THE parents. Several years ago, I helped my son find his birth parents. In my FTM, Cory is listed as our son AND a descendent of all of my husband's and my ancestors - just like our other two children. Additionally, I have included what I know (and am learning) about the ancestry of his birth parents.I think that it is good to give as broad of picture of his roots as possible as all of those who went before - from his birth family and adoptive family - helped to create what he is today. Just my thoughts on the subject of adoption. Phyllis in Colorado
Beverly, Jim Edd Monkhouse married a first cousin of mine, Billie Frances Fryar (her mother was a Watson) I am not sure if it was Jim Edd's first marriage or not. They later divorced. I visited Jim Edd many time in Regency Nursing Home before my dad died this past Oct. I have a love for visiting anyone with a connection to Hopewell. I showed Jim Edd a picture I had of Billie Frances on a pretty white horse. He said he gave the horse to her and she loved the horse more than him (with a grin). Billie' father was the Lewis Fryar I mentioned recently that lead music at the Hopewell Church when I was a boy. Monkhouse is one of many very old name of Red River County. John Monkhouse was a man of importance that came from England, returned, and came back. Billie and her mother go to Hopewell Church, but Inez (the mother) is finding it hard to got recently because of health. The J.B. is the initials my dad wrote in his notes, he may have meant J.R. Mowery, but seems I recall a J.B. also that I will search for again. Thanks to all who replied to my query on my upcoming trip to Red River County next week. You were all so helpful. I have one day to do my research there and your suggestions have been a great help!!!! Thanks so much!!! Donna Merrill
I have found two more connections to this Burns family. You will see that Charles Lawrence married Lillie Burns and Florence Campbell married John Dow burns. Charles Lawrence is my great uncle and the son of Mary Campbell by her 1st marriage to Samuel Patton Lawrence and 1st cousin to Florence Campbell who is the daughter of Bluford Campbell (Mary Campbells brother) and Mary's neice. This could get confusing to their children. Charlie Burns and Mary Idella Campbell Lawrence Craine Burns had three children, Norral, Monroe and Dovie, These three are my 1/2 great uncles and aunt. Ken, I don't know about the Adoption laws in Texas, but in Louisiana it would be next to impossible. When a child is adopted in LA, they have the same rights as a natural born child if not more! An adopted child has rights to inheritance not only to the adopted parents but the natural as well! I wish you luck on your research. I adopted my child and do not think any other way by her other than she is MY CHILD! I would hope that no other family member would try to prove otherwise! Allen Lawrence Kenneth Spangler wrote: Here is a quick question that I thought I would never ask. If I were to discover that my grandparents had adopted a child, (not my father but one of the siblings) would there be a way to discover when the adoption took place? I know this would have taken place around 1926 in Red River county. I just don't know how the laws are concerning adoptions. The concerned individual died in the 1980s. I'm not so much concerned about the identity of the individual as I am just proving that this individual was not an actual birth child, but adopted. Any responses to help guide me in this area would be appreciated. Thanks, Ken Spangler Paris, Texas --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Jim: The J.R. Mowery buried at Concord Cemetery is James "Richard" Mowery, son of Mathias. Richard married my g. grandfather's sister Susan Thoms 3-31-1868, after the death of Richard in 1881 Susie married Robert Monkhouse. Frances one of the daughter's of Richard and Susie Mowery, married Charley "Bud" Monkhouse who is the father of Jim Edd Monkhouse, confusing yes but maybe this puts together some connection with Hopewell. Don't know whether I'm the John you had in mind, but I was a child in Bogata in the early thirties. The fireballs sound like a lot of fun, maybe dangerous but fun, but I don't remember such in Bogata. Maybe they were strictly a family custom. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eddie" <tempt@icx.net> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2003 1:17 AM Subject: [TXREDRIV] John do you remember? > July 4th is coming up and we are trying to make it back to Avery for the > Tomato Festival and all the celebration. July 4th is coming up and we are trying to make it back to Avery for the Tomato Festival and all the celebration. My mind drifted back to some July 4ths in Avery. In the early 30's our fireworks consisted of things Mom made. She would take cloth and tear it in strips. It was usually old Cotton sheets. She would make a tight ball stitching every layer, until it was about the size of a softball. She would make two of them and soak them in Coal Oil for about 3-4 weeks. She would keep them submerged all the time. On the night of July 4th she would take them out of the Kerosene and lay them on the ground for about 30 minutes. When everyone was ready for the big event she would light both balls and we would pick them up and throw them to each other. They would make the most awful fluttering sound going thru the air and somewhat awesome with the fire flying off them and drifting in the wind. At first I thought Mom would whip me if I didn't pick it up and throw that firey thing. I just knew my hands would burn off. But in desperation or fear of Mom's whipping I picked it up and threw it fast. We would throw the balls and try to hit the other ball for hours. Everyone took turns and everyone had a -----ball doing it. The cost of this entertainment was almost zero, and could be reused, but oh so much fun. It wasn't long before the store bought fireworks replaced these wonderful ole balls. Eddie M. Robinson Oak Ridge, Tn "The Secret City"
I guess I missed that discussion. I see if I can pick it up somewhere. My name is Bettye Justis. I live in Bastrop, TX. I have been quietly keeping up with things happening on this board for some time. My inlaws moved from Cherry area about 1924 or so I am not sure right now. The moved from there to Melvin, TX , San Saba, TX, then to Llano, TX in 1946. I would appreciate any info you can find for me. I was able to obtain a marriage lice. for Maud and Joseph Justis when I was there. I find no records of Joseph Felix Justis (Justice as it is mispelled in most cases.). I have been curious as to what he was doing in Clarksville area. There was a family named Carrol that lived near by. My father in law said he thought they were related to the Justis family and moved from there to Anson. The Grant house was the old one with the porch all around it. I think it was green at the time. Mr. Grant went to school with Charlie Justis and there was one other man we saw there that when to school with them. I can't remember his name. He was at a Mobil station in town when we caught up with him (I think it was Mobil). The rail way was near where the Justis family lived. We walked out to where it had been and got some wonderful pictures of Charlie on the tracks and near the crawdad hole were he fished when he was a child. Charlie was the oldest of 7 or 8 children. Most of the born in the area. Bettye Bettye
Charlie Justis. He was born in RR County in 1910. His family lived in the Cherry Community. Most of his brothers and sisters were also born there. I am looking for any and all informtion I cn find on the family. Also my father in law's mother and dad were married there in 1907. Maud Bannings and Joseph Justis. Maud was raised by the CC Loggins family as her father died when she was about 2. They lived near the railroad track near where the Grant house is. We visted there a few year back and went to the cemetery and around the community with my father in law. It is a beautiful area, my father in law talked about Clarksville with love in his heart. He had only fond memories of the area. He passed away Jan. 2002 at 94 yrs. I just wonder if there are any photo's of the school in that community out there some where. Bettye
I just got to share this with my friends. (delete if not interested) I have been keeping my eye/ear open for Mathias Mowery (born 1812) for several years. Just his week-end I had contact with a person that filled in the blanks for me. My task was to connect Mathis Mowery that married my GG GF Wiley Giddens's sister, Malinda Giddens, in 1837 in Red River Co. (od and confusing that Wiley's wife name was Malinda also). I knew there just had to a connection to Mathias & the present day Mowery's from Hopewell that I go to church with it Paris. I finally got the information together to fill in the blanks. It also connects all of them to J.B. Mowery burred at Concord (Giddens) Cemetery. I also found a J.R. Mowery in the mix, so I still need to make sure these are not the same two people. Mathias was a very interesting man that own the land that became Blue Ridge, Tx. (between Dallas and Bonham). He received the land grant for his service in the Texas Revolution. Just what his service was seems to be in question. Records show he arrived in Red River County 15 Oct 1834.. He had land dealing in Lamar County and was on the Fed Census in Red River county in 1850 with wife and children. They had 13 children. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx
Bettye, My father was born in 1910. His sister died when she was 4 in 1912 and was the first Giddens buried at Stone's Chapel. My dad went to Hopewell around 1918 when his father "Marion Giddens" started teaching at Hopewell School. He and your Justis may have gone to school together. I will see what I can find out. We discussed the Cherry School a few weeks ago on this board, did you get in on that. My dad Robert "Wesley" Giddens passed away Oct 15, 2002. at the age of 92, but in the one room school, I bet they were in the same room. It is thought that the sister "Vivian Giddens" died of cholera that had struck the community. You mention the Grant house. Are you talking of the old one at Cherry. It burnt down about 2 months ago. There is no railroad track at Cherry, so maybe you are speaking of another house. Bettye, if you don't mind, we would like you last name also and area/city you live. It just make us all a little my interested in the one we are talking. However it is not a requirement and I understand if you had rather not. Thanks. I was getting excited as my father in law went to school at Cherry. I jsut wanted to be sure. Thanks. Bettye
Bettye, My dad went to school at Cherry around 1912 and my grandfather was teaching there. There are both buried there at Cherry/Stone Chapel. What is the name of your father in law, if you don't mind sharing. Maybe I would know him. Is the picture from Sherry or Cherry School? Bettye
Opps, Sorry Ken, I see now it was your grandmother's picture. Do you know her connection to Sherry? Someone has probably replied already, I just got in, but. Sherry is a old community about 4 miles south of Clarksville on the "old" Bogata highway FM 909. Cherry is a old community north of Clarksville about 4 miles and east of Hwy 37 on FM 2283 about 2 miles where Stones Chapel Cemetery is. There was a school at Cherry and I assume there was a school at Sherry. It has always been confusing to a lot of people including me. Jim Giddens Paris, p.s. Ken what was your mother's maiden name? I was raised in Clarksville. Maybe some of us will know her or the family. Or maybe she only has the picture and did not go to school there. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Moore" <moor4933@bellsouth.net> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 6:33 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Old School Picture from Sherry, Texas. > Ken: > In what Red River County community is Sherry School located. > Thanks: > > Bob Moore in MS > moor4933@bellsouth.net > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Kenneth Spangler" <spanglergen@yahoo.com> > To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2003 5:49 PM > Subject: [TXREDRIV] Old School Picture from Sherry, Texas. > > > > Hi all, > > > > I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in an old school > picture I found last night. Hi everyone, Here is a quick question that I thought I would never ask. Free online calendar with sync to Outlook(TM).
