All, this is just rambling of some memories of my Avery days, please just click delete if not interested ____________________________________________________________________________ __________ I just finished scrolling the list of the graves listed at Savannah Cemetery. I was sadden by the number of names I knew. A few quite well when we live in Avery in the 70s, some I knew their children and others just the family name. I see Gid Holder (E.M. Holder) listed twice. One says WW I and the other WW II. It would have been WW II. Gid owned a cafe and gas station on US 82 on the east end of town. Then sweet little Hallie Hardeman (mother of Harry Hardeman), Dow Floyd, George & Helen Peek (not dead) the Keelings and the Wilburns, George, Cato, Kennedy, Bearden, Titus, Rosenberry, Mullins Stinson, Anderson, Duncan, Nevill. Well I should not have started naming names because there are just too many. Several of the other family names I recall of Annona (Sullivan), Lone Star(Tucker) and the Bagwell/Dimple (Tharp) area. I use to see Joe Wilburn (son of Joe) at Regency Nursing Home at the nursing home with his wife. Joe was at the nursing home for every meal. He is probably still going but I have not been there much since my Dad passed on. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx p.s. I hope Dr. Tom is at the lake and not in the hospital. He took a fall a couple of weeks ago and banged himself up some. ----- Original Message ----- From: "steve" <stevesdoor@attbi.com> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 20, 2003 9:02 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] SAVANNAH Texas. I would like to know where this place is located. Can't seem to find it on any maps.
Good fishing, Steven If you need any other help, I will do my best. If you don't have one, I suggest you go by the Chamber of Commerce on the square in Clarksville for a free county map. Becky Hale's office on the north side of the square will have them also. Steve? Savannah Cemetery Anthony Tucker Rt 1 Box 114 Avery, Tx 75554 903-684-3780 I don't know if he is in charge, but he is listed at a contact person. Also the County web-site has information on the cemetery and listing of graves. What about your name and where you live. Exchanging information keeps my interest up. Savannah: Let's see if I can make this simple. First it is east southeast of Clarksville about 13 to 16 miles. Go east from Clarksville 8 miles to Annona, then south on FM 44 about 3-4 miles (halfway to Boxelder), then east on FM 1701 about 1 to 2 miles and turn south on CR 4405. This will put you in Savannah. The cemetery is about 1/2 miles south on 4405 on the left (east) according to the map. Continue south on 4405 maybe a mile and you will hit the Gilliam Cemetery. From this point you can turn back west and hit 44 again, but the road turns and splits so don't get lost. I have always had a hard time keep Savannah and Swanville, so I double checked my maps. Steve, I remember Jr and G.L. Baird of Boxelder long ago in the 50s when I was in high school in Clarksville. G.L. married a neighbor of our, Lucille. Later they divorced. The two Baird boy (young men) were a couple of years older than me. I am now 61 and closing in on 62. I remember G.L. run some with Kyle Russell, son of Joe Ed Russell. Jr had a very cool. fast, 57 Ford (he had a job) and Kyle drove a Silver Hawk. I have never forgot the fight between G.L. and Kyle late one night in front of the Top Drive-In. We all expected Jr (big and tuff) to step in when Kyle seemed to be killing G.L. but he didn't. My only thought was that Jr was letting his little brother learn the lesson of not starting something he couldn't finish. I still see Lucille in Paris and Clarksville from time to time, but I do not know what happened to Jr & G.L. I do not know the names you mentioned and I realize you typed "Beard" instead of Baird. I could probably learn more if you need any information. I really would not know, either there are Paris Junior College would be a good bet. I know it was in the very early 40's when I remember seeing all those little buildings there, and I feel sure that from the size of some of the living quarters, there was no room in them for cooking, so they probably had a larger place where they could eat, so this might fit in with someone getting a job there cooking. It might be worth your time checking into it, and I bet Paris Jr. College could at least point you in the right direction for more information. 60 years is a little deep for my memory, but I do remember seeing it. Steve, I am not personally familiar with the Bairds, but did know there are many in this area. I went to school with some Bairds in Bogata (Rivercrest) but have lost contact with almost everyone since I moved away. I moved back to the area last August. Are you related to the Bairds? Carol, How are you connected to the Huddleston family? Do you have a Reynolds married to a Huddleston? Joyce
Hi Sam, I wonder where the records would be? At the Court House maybe??? Carol S.
Yes, there is a Clarksville City right outside of Gladewater in Gregg Co.....I should have referred to it as just Clarksville...but the census on my Ancestry.com refers to it this way District 4 CLARKSVILLE CITY (SOUTHWEST PART), WARD 4 sorry for the confusion..
