    3. Well there were about 15 people at the Friends of Red River County Cemeteries" meeting. It was discussed way of getting groups to adopt a cemetery and clean it up twice a year. Groups such as civic clubs, V.F.D, churches, businesses, school clubs, scouts etc. This may work better that trying to collect money which can be a hold can of worms (paper work and accountability). There was mention of presenting it to the public via KCAR. Becky Hale is the one heading this up. Becky & Mary Hausler will work on how to present it to the groups and Mary agreed to speak to them or to arrange for one of their own that is interested to speak to them. I told Mary I would help her if she needed any help from me. I did take a copy of a list of cemeteries in the county that has a person listed at the contact person. Almost all of the people at the meeting were members of the RR Co Genealogy Society, but not all. The next meeting was set for Aug 18, due to people being out of town etc. It was pointed that this groups is in no way to interfere or override or replace the wonderful work that the many cemeteries association are now doing. This is one reason the word "Friend" was used. This is far the cemeteries that are abandoned and uncared for cemeteries. The help of the county/sheriff dept was also discussed. They do help, but this is mostly a one time thing for the "big" stuff that has grown up over many years, so that others can come in an clean it up with. They can not be expected to maintain cemeteries. I guess that is about it. Hope to see you and others at the next meeting. 3. The Red River County cemeteries are at Part One http://www.rootsweb.com/~txredriv/cem1.html and Part Two http://www.rootsweb.com/~txredriv/cem2.html. Savannah Cemetery http://www.rootsweb.com/~txredriv/savannah.html From Annona go south on FM 44 for 4.1 miles to the intersection with FM 1701. Take FM 1701 east for 2 miles to the intersection with CR 4405. Take CR 4405 south or left for 4/10 mile and turn into the gates to Savannah Cemetery on the left. The cemetery is another 3/10 mile east. A deed dated 11 Oct 1926 and filed for record on 11 Oct 1926 in Book CH Vol 118 page 255 conveyed '60 acres of the Dennis Hardy survey sold to O. W. Howard less 2 acres for cemetery' from D. H. Howard to Savannah Cemetery. Also a deed dated 21 Nov 1927 and filed for record on 21 Nov 1927 in Book CH Vol 121 page 182 conveys 1 acre of the Dennis Hardy survey from RRCo, TX to Savannah Church. The oldest marked grave is that of James Titus who died on 9 Nov 1843. 2. Thanks Ginger will check it out. Does anybody know anything about this person. I can't find him in the 1900 or 1880 census. But I am told(we know what that can get me into)that he was born lived and Died in Texas in RRC Lived in the area of the Savanna Cemetery. Had a wife named Fannie Hood. This is the reason I am going to the Cemetery.

    1. [TXREDRIV] CR behind Madras Cemetery//rambling
    2. Jim Giddens
    3. This is not genealogy, but of a back road(s) in Red River County. (feel free to delete). It all started last week when I (with my grandson) was looking for a deserted (grown up) road from the Madras Cemetery behind Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church to the old home place spot where my GGG GF built his home about 1.5 to 2 miles east of the Madras Cemetery**. I did find the old road. It is fence up and filled full of smaller trees and brush. You can see where the fence row ran on each side of the "use to be" road. This road did run due east from the back side (south side) of the cemetery. To get to this point I drove a gravel road from the front of the cemetery, alone the north side of the cemetery (outside the cemetery fence) to around behind the cemetery.. What I was surprised to find was the gravel/rock/dirt road did continue to run straight south. I drove this road about two miles and was glad to find a place at a barn to turn around and not have to back up for 2 miles on a slippery road. From this point as I looked farther down the road south, the road looked in better shape. I dug out my Chamber map and sure enough the road would go all the way though to FM 114 (The English Road). I started to drive on through, but I had told my grandson, I would drive straight from Clarksville to Concord so as he would not be confused on how to get there someday when he may be on his own. So, I drove us back to FM 1700 and continue on to Concord. We put on our boots and for the first time, I walked behind Concord Cemetery, climbed through the fence, crossed Concord Creek and about another 100 yards found a clearing and the area where my GGG GF Richard F Giddens built is home after he came here in 1833. This was a beautiful spot to me and I took several pictures. Maybe a little more rambling on that later. ** I realize the Madras Cemetery or church was not here at this time in 1833. I suspect this old road was the road from Concord to Clarksville and/or the road to where Hamilton/Latimer came to Old Shiloh about 4 miles to the west of Concord in 1833 also. I suspect and search for evidence that my Giddens people attended the Shiloh Church before they established the Concord Church in 1844. Ok, as you can see I have been off work for a few days and do no work again until Tuesday. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx

    1. Re: [TXREDRIV] Poor Farm// CR 4305
    2. Jim Giddens
    3. Ginger, Yes, one could take that route but it is not a straight shot by no means.. The county road you are referring to is CR 4305 from US 82 to FM 1701. It takes a few crooks and turns and crosses a White Oak Creek and also crosses a branch of the creek. I do not know about the current condition of this road or if the water gets up at the creeks.. Once you hit CR 1701 you will still need to go back west on FM 1701 a short piece to turn south on CR 4405 to put you at Savannah. And yes the Savannah Cemetery is off the road about 1/3 of a mile but the gate is near the road. I have double checked all of this on the Chamber map and a General Highway Map of RR Co I bought from Robert Storey. This has really got my curiosity up about the condition of these two county roads. Maybe I will get a chance to drive them some time this week-end or Monday. If I do I will let you know. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx p.s. I did discover a new (to me) back road last week. I will tell of it on a separate message.
