Carrie, I, for one, do plan to attend the Avery festivities. However, I don't know what time I am going. Would love the chance to meet you and others. The idea of Jim setting up another meeting at another time would be great too! My gggggrandfather was Andrew (Andress) Willett. in Dec, 1835 Sam Houston recruited him to come from Tennessee to Texas to fight for Texas. He came from McNairy, TN to Red River, TX but shortly after arrival in TX he died on 28 Jun 1836 of fever after exposure in MS swamps. His wife, Julia Benson Shropshire Willett, later received a league and a labor from the Republic. Children were Abraham Allen, Richard Parsons, Thomas Marion, Harrison Hicks, John Andrew, Martha Lavina, and James R who was born in Red River Co. 2 Jun 1836. On 2 Jan 1838, Julia married William Morris with whom she had Sarah Isabelle, George W, Alfred H., Jordan B., and Mary Jane. Is anyone researching this Willett family? Janet Milam
Carrie, I don't know what special people will be at Avery for the Tomato Festival Days. Maybe someone else has more information. I bet the Avery web site will have it or you can e-mail the city secretary. My family is have a get together the 4th. I hope I am able to get to Avery. Eddie Robinson hope to be there but he is having medical complications with a knee that may prevent him from traveling from Tenn. I am sure there will be a lot of people there but I don't know about people from our list group. One place to meet if we do may be the old drug store building on Main Street (actually Texas Ave if I recall correctly), but the Business US 82. The title out side the front door says "DRUGS". It is not a eating place with some antiques in it. I was there last week and saw such stuff as the "Gathings" drug wrapping paper on a big roll and some bottle that had grease pencil markings make by me in the 70s. Some one had already cleared out the really old stuff before I bought the drug store in 1969. I do still have a few old prescriptions that were written in 1917 and 1918 and filled at the old drug store. If this does not work out, maybe we could have one of own reunions again in the near future like we had 2 or 3 years ago. (this is not genealogy, but it is some memories of mine in Red River Co) Do any of you remember the song "Hey Paula" by Paul & Paula. Around 1960. It sold over 3 million records. I just saw them selling it in one of those package deals on TV. I see it often. Paul's real name is Ray Hildebrand. His father-in-law (Don Hendricks) was my pastor for a few years in Avery in the 1970s. Ray and his wife (not Paula) came from Kansas City a couple of time to visit. He was doing Christian music at that time and was a officer with the FCA at the National office in Kansas City. He had played basketball in college. He would sing Christian music at church for us, but he would also invite us all to the pastors back yard at night and sing/play his pop and Christian songs for us. He wrote and sang the Christian song, "I Wish They Had All Been Ready" that some of you make have heard. I have a old Christian album of his called "Welcome Warriors". There is a very human interest story about when Ray's wife was beat and shot twice in the chest with a 45, and left for dead in the blood cover house by a home robber. They did not think she would live, then not talk, then now walk, but with 6 to 12 months she was doing all these things. They caught the shooter over a year later when she I.D.ed him in a butcher shop about 2 miles from their home. All this happened after their visits to Avery. By the way Ray walked away from the pop music business just after Hey Paula hit the 3 million mark and went in full time Christian work with the CFA and Christian music. Hummm. I wonder where Ray is now. Bro Hendricks is in a nursing home in east Texas, maybe Henderson, Tx. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx

Steve, I know very little about the grown up cemetery behind the Taylor farm. I have never been to it. I remember the Taylor family speaking of it in conversation, even back when we lived in Avery during the 70s. The Taylor's daughter, Janie Taylor Hall mentioned it again last week when I was at their monument business place in Avery . The office number for the shop is 903-684-3331. I think she gave me their e-mail address but I don't see it at the moment. If/when I find it, I will send it to you. Janie's husband name is Don Hall. They both work at the shop. When I say the cemetery is behind their "home place", I don't know just have far. Maybe a couple of miles, I just do not know. Looking now at one of my maps, I see about 4 cemeteries in the area. Perhaps it is one of these, again I don't know. The cemeteries I see in that area are shown on the map as, Wilkes, Medford, Dillard, and Wooten Cemetery. I have never been to any of these. They are all a little northwest of Lydia. I have a great aunt that married a Whiteman and they had a ranch in Red River County, sure would like to know what happened to this branch of the family. I think my mom still has a Whiteman cousin living in Clarksville. I will have to ask her. The aunt I am speaking of was named: Ada May Taylor Whiteman, she was my grandfather's sister. She raised him after their parents died. Her husband's name was Chester Oliver Whiteman, I think. Are any of these Whitemans ya'll's relations. Cathy Fort Worth, Texas

These families intermarried about 100 years and lived around English. I am curious if there are any still in RRC, or on this list? Thanks, Bob Crain, Austin
Bob, I knew a Theolia Crain in Avery, mother to Marjorie Nicholas the post mistress. Mrs Crain had her own little office in Avery to collect water bills etc. I bought Mrs Crain's 1966 Ford in 1975 for my kids and they sure got good use out of it. There were many Whiteman's in Red River County in the 1950. Jim Whiteman was a champion rodeo cowboys. His son Jimbo is about 2 years younger than me (I am 61+) and I think lives in the Longview area. Jimbo's sister Janet Whiteman was in my class of 59 and married Reid Ussery and still lives in Clarksville area (I think). There was a Whiteman family in the Concord Church in the 1850s. There is still a Mrs Jim Whiteman in the Clarksville phone book and a few others. Reid Ussery is also listed in the book. Another sister work in the drivers license office here in Paris and will take your picture. She is a little younger and her names slips me at the moment. The RRR book tells of many many Whiteman people back to Squire Loman and Dora Francis (McGill) Whiteman. Loman (Babe) Whiteman 1884 to 1962. Mary Lanell Whiteman married Robert Allen "Slim" Hulen. He rodeoed with Herbert"Hub" Whiteman. Hub was world champion and was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Ok City. Jim was a deputy sheriff of RRCo and Chief of Police of Clarksville after his rodeo days. Man, there is just not a stopping place, so I will quit. No I won't, I have a newspaper clipping of Sheriff Slim Hulen with his 6-gun on a escaped convict out of the Texarkana pen about 1958. I saw the man's partner lying shot dead on the railroad track. I think I told that story once. Slim is in Regency Nursing Home in very weak condition. I use to visit him before my dad died at Regency. I am glad I saved that clipping long ago. I see two Crane names listed in Red River Co but no Crain. There are two Crain names in the Paris area. I spoke in the past of the Acworth Church and the cemetery behind it (in northeast RRCo). I think I referred to the Mt Olive Church as Acworth Church. I just ran across my notes saying it is Mt Olive Cemetery and according our home web-site, it is Mt Olive Church. I knew the arch gateway of the cemetery said Mt Olive (my picture helps my memory) but there was no name on the church building and I assumed it was Acworth Church, which now seems to be my mistake. My maps shows that this is (or extremely near) Acworth Community. This is a black cemetery. I enjoy taking notes and pictures of all old churches and cemeteries and sharing any information I may have to help someone. Just wanted to clear up the name of the cemetery and church in case I had lead anyone off onto a wrong path. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx

Thanks Jim: I appreciate all the help that you and Sam have extended. My grandmother Bennie Collier Diseker Bruce is buried in Woodland Cemetery and Bennie has a marker (tomb). I was trying to go through the back door and maybe find out who Bennie's parents were, if the Reynolds Funeral Home was still in business or was purchased by someone. There is one thing that I have found out during my research, the Disekers were there in the 1880 thru 1900 then they scattered, or died. I have not been able to visit via snail mail, phone or the internet with any one that knew anything creditable about my Disekers. I will keep plugging along and once again thanks for your information. If you stumble across anything on the Diseker's give me a buz. Thanks again. I have a copy of the work Mike Hill did on Amos Stone. My time is short now, but the church was organized in 1858 as Stone's Chapel Presbyterian Church.. He donated prior to 1862 4 acres for land for a cemetery, not knowing he would be the first buried there. IN 1886, Moses S Grand donated more land north of the cemetery to the church to be used for a school.. The school was simply named Cherry after the community which had been named for a early settler, G.P. Cherry. Stone died Nov 14, 1862 at 49 hears of age. Stone came to minister to Clarksville in 1857, soon went to San Antonio to start a mission, after one year returned to Clarksville in 1861 and ministered to the Stone's Chapel Church until his death in 1862. This tell us about the school & church, but not sure about when the "Cherry" community was started. Sorry, that all I have time for now.
