Actually, we did that about 2 years ago. We planned it for Memorial Day weekend without realizing that a bunch of people had graduations to attend that day. We had maybe about 20 people attend, but everyone had a good time. Maybe it is time to do it again. Fall would be OK with me, if there is enough interest. We don't have a state park nearby. We had our meeting at South Lake. Where do you live Cathy? You probably told us but I forgot. You know what one of the county lists I belong to in Tennessee does in the summer. They have a reunion and all those who have genealogical ties to the county are invited. They use a nearby state park and have a good old time. The people bring their histories and research and share what they can. They have food, fun and just good old American fellowship. Jim, I am not an expert, but I did speak with a local treasure hunter (whose name I have forgotten) about choices a few years ago, when I had the urge to hunt treasure. He wanted me to spend nearly $500, and I lost my enthusiasm. You might want to post an enquiry on the newsgroup "alt.treasure.hunting" and check on offers of second hand ones on "dfw.forsale." I would imagine that for $200 you could get a used one that really had power. I haven't explored the subject on google. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Giddens" <jimg@cox-internet.com> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 04, 2003 10:02 AM Subject: [TXREDRIV] question// not genealogy > Question: Is a Metal Detector that cost around $200.00 that much better than the one I have that I bought a couple of years ago for around $30 to $50. About 2 years ago I got a death certificate from Red River County and paid $1. About 4 years ago I purchased 2 death certificates from Titus County for a total of $18. Each county is apparently different. Has anyone gotten a death certificate in Red River County (or any other county in Texas recently)? I am wondering if this is a standard practice now. I knew there had been some changes but I didn't think anything that far back would be such a big deal. Cynthia Cynthia: I believe this is a Texas law. Tennessee has the old death certificates on microfilm. I had wondered about TX. I've paid for several that couldn't be located--very frustrating. Maybe you could write your legislators. Yes there is death record index, are you looking for someone in RRCounty? If they are in the cemetery book the number may be there, a lot are. I would be glad to look for you. The Texas State Library and Archives has a list of births and deaths. Their web site is: www.tsl.state.tx.us I think that the General Interest tab is where you go to the genealogy section. I know that for both death certs and marriage licenses in TX that they have gotten punitive in their charges and I believe that it may be law that death certs must be certified. When I was in TX last year I complained about a certified marriage license in Cooke Co. and was told that it was the county clerk's policy and I had no choice - this was after doing all the research myself and even getting the book to make a photostatic copy. I tried to send this message once before and it apparently bounced. If it went to the list before I apologize. They have done it again. Is the price difference because of the "certified" copy with the official stamp etc, instead of just a photo copy. I have also heard that can't just anyone ask for a certified copy and get it. Cynthia and others, I recently got a marriage certificate in Hall County for two dollars, and have gotten numerous copies in Red River and Eastland Counties for a dollar or so. I have had to pay for certified copies here in Potter County and also Gray County since I have been doing genealogy. It seems that it depends on the county whether they will make copies or only do certified copies, at the much increased price. I only knew him as Oren (or Oran). I did not know he was O.L., but I did not know him that well. I think they may have moved in across the street from us after I graduated from CHS and was going to PJC. Probably lived there about 2 or 3 years. I do see his listing at Bogata as O.L. Recently I discovered that my great-grandmother had a sister who died in Paris in 1947. Yesterday I went by the courthouse to get a copy of the death certificate. You can only get certified copies, they cost $9.00 and you have to fill out a form explaining your relationship and why you need it.
