South Lake sounds wonderful, its got my vote. I really would like to come to Red River county. I don't remember very much about it. I have only been there 3 times. One is when I was to little to remember, the second was when we visited my great aunt Ada Mae Taylor Whiteman and her husband Chester Oliver Whiteman on their ranch. I remember it was a beautiful ranch and the house was old. I think it must have been in the family for years. My aunt's stove was very old and her food out of this world. My mom use to visit her all the time when she was young. Every summer as a teenager she would take to bus to Clarksville from Ft. Worth and visit her family. She had either a cousin or aunt she stayed with in Clarksville. She tells me she use to sit out on the porch in the evenings and watch the passer bys. When I listen to her now it seems like it was another time and place, something that is only found in books now, well at least for this city girl who has a yearning to leave the city and move back to East Texas where her roots are. I desire a simplier life where things move at a slower pace. Maybe someday I will be able to move back to Red River County. I want to stand on the same ground that they did so long ago. I don't even know why. Does that even make sense? I have determined that between now and the time school starts, I am going to at least pay a visit to RRCO and visit some cemetries. I wish I knew where my Aunt Ada and Uncle Chester lived and what happened to the ranch. They have both passed on now. My grandfather would have been 100 in 2000. He was born in 1900, Ada was older than him by many years. She raised him after their parents died. She out lived him. He died at 72 after a car hit him. You know, I just realized. My grandfather died from an acciedent, as did his father before him, and his grandfather was hit by a train and lost his legs but survived. Both my great grandfather and my great great grandfather died the same year. If not for acciedents, the Taylor-Harveys have longevity in their genes. Cathy Cathy
Jim, I don't know whether even the good ones are designed to explore six feet down, even for a large metal object like a modern coffin. There used to be a lit prof at NETC College who was enthusiastic about a device that measured density well enough to find old graves, but I can't remember his name. Will try to find out. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Giddens" <jimg@cox-internet.com> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 04, 2003 10:33 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] question// not genealogy > Thanks John, I did not know any of them cost more than around $200.00. I nominate Jim Giddens as "point man" for planning and organizing the next RRCo genealogy reunion, for he did a great job last time. Perhaps we could involve by the county genealogical society and the county historical society to a greater degree. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Brownie57cjh@aol.com> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 05, 2003 10:30 AM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] RR Co. Our earlier Red River County version of the Tennessee county reunion was small but a pleasure. Jim Giddens organized some great collateral activities. It could be considerably improved on only by a larger turnout! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Giddens" <jimg@cox-internet.com> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 05, 2003 9:43 AM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] reunion > Bonnie, > I can't remember Jimmy Mauldin's family, but he is probably related to you. > His Mauldin have been in RR Co a long time. I say let all those who are interested in a reunion give us their ideas and then maybe a few who are good at planning and organizing can take the suggestions and start planning. How do you all feel about that?
Can anyone tell me where South Lake is? Cathy
OK, for some of you people who have joined our group since then, a few pictures taken at the last reunion are at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txredriv/pictures.html I believe there is a map with directions to South Lake up there someplace, but I don't remember where it is. I will look at files and get back with you. Cynthia
Bonnie, I can't remember Jimmy Mauldin's family, but he is probably related to you. His Mauldin have been in RR Co a long time. I am thinking they were in the Avery/Annona Boxelder area, but maybe not. He married Betty Brown (or was her sister Mary) that I went to CHS with. I hope Jimmy is still the lake keeper at South Lake (private club), it is officially named, Red River Country Club, but nobody calls it that. I do have a cap with that on it. RRR book is great but many or left out because they did not know about it and did not enter any information. I knew nothing about it at the time (1985), but lucky for me, may Dad and a uncle Homer Giddens (actually my dad;s cousin) made entries. Sam is probably on the side, cooking up something for us. I hope Eddie is in Avery, but I would not bet on it. Tom, I hope you are getting (setting) around better. Saw John H. at the Fish Fry last Wednesday night. Well, I had better shave and get to Avery. I have collected a few Avery pictures to take, but did not get the old Avery prescriptions in the attic. I just got the Red River Recollections from interlibrary loan. What a wonderful resource! While disappointed there is no mention of Broomfield or Brumfield (on census for Clarksville, Pct. 8, a farmer in 1870 & 1880), I found John and Margaret Cooper (but no mention of my ancestor, their son Fielden (Fielding) Green Cooper who married Sarah Caroline Brumfield--Sallie--in RR Co in Sept 1877). There are some differences in details now that some descendants have shared our information, and there's a drawing of Margaret Youngblood Cooper. If a supplement or update is done, let me know. I was especially interested in Clarksville and Annona information. I haven't ever looked at land records. How do I begin that in RR Co? Linda Mabry, Tallahassee FL

I like your idea of a Red River County Genealogy Reunion. So many of us do not know any one living in Red River Co. and would give us an idea of the area, people and just fun with other genealogist. No plans necessary but a place and time for all of us to meet there. A year ahead would be the best for those who work. I live in Blue Eye, Missouri. Looking for Wallis, Ware and McCarley. Barb
Sounds like a great idea to me; I live in MO so have to plan in advance. I think the spring would be best. No this is not bingo. A B-52 Bomber did a fly over here at Paris today. It was cool. Flew at about 1000 feet and waved its wings. To my surprise it did a circle and came back for a second fly over from a different angle. This came off like clock work at 3 p.m. It was from Barksdale AFB, La and I am sure it must have flown over several other cities. Did any of you see it, where ever you are. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx
Well, I will make it to Avery tomorrow. There will be BBQ meals sold at the tomato shed from 11:30 a.m. till 2 p.m. I will be there. It would be great to see some of you there. I will have on my U.S. Flag shirt. I also plan to be in front of the old Gathings Drug Store (where it was) at 2 p.m. This is the building that still has the word "DRUGS" in the tile in front of the front door. If any of you are there and we don't meet up sooner, be in front of the drugs store at 2 p.m. According to the paper, there will be events going on all day. I know many of your are far way and may not have a Avery connection anyway, but having lived there 8 years and all 3 of our children going to school there, I plan on have a good time seeing some good old friends, and hopefully some new ones. Maybe I will get up in the attic early in the mornings and find those 1917 prescriptions from Avery to take with me. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx jimg@cox-internet.com
I think some time in the fall would be good for a board reunion, at least for me. As Cynthia said, we had one about 2 (or is it 3) years ago at South Lake (5 miles south of Clarksville) but the timing turned out not to be the best. I think it would be great to have it there again, but I am open to other suggestions. I would have to talk with the lake keeper, Jimmy Mauldin, but I feel it would not be a problem. Also a new club house has been built. I have not seen it, but understand it is nice. Maybe I will take a look at it this week end. My wife and I had a cabin at South Lake for several years and I think it is a beautiful, relaxing place. It has several adequate peers for fishing by adults are children. No mountains or waterfalls, just pretty oak trees, 100 acres lake, about 20 to 30 cabins around the lake. (no golf course). Alcohol is not permitted in public areas. I will post about the Avery Tomato Days (July 5, tomorrow) in a moment. Thanks John, I did not know any of them cost more than around $200.00. I wonder if they can reach a buried lost coffin? Could a cheaper one for that matter? Anyone one with info please jump in. I live in Fort Worth. There is a state park near Sulpher Springs. I can't remember the name of it though. It doesn't necessarily have to be a state park, any large park would do that we could have a pavillion or something. There are two relatively new ones in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. They are Lake Ray Roberts and Joe Pool Lake. Also, I know of Tyler State Park and Caddo but they aren't that close to Red River county. Is there anything north in Oklahoma that you know of. All I know of is Lake Texoma, and Beavers Bend, which is outside of Broken Bow and is very beautiful and serene. I imagine you people in Red River County already know about that one. Cathy
