Salem Baptist Church is listed in the RR Valley Baptist Association history from 1848 to 1991, to be the 11th Baptist Church in the State of Texas. Established in 1856. The writing in 1991 indicates the church is still there, but I do not know. The RRVBA office is in Paris, Tx. The Methodist and the Presbyterian as the earliest Protestants churches to Texas the way I read it, except of course for the Catholics that were in Texas with the Spaniards. For some reason the LDS do not have the rights to the Tax lists! I've asked and had professionals that regularly work the Family History Library in Salt Lake asking me to go do work for them since the Dallas Public Library has a complete set. I just don't get down to the library much these days. Jeri Cynthia Samples wrote: >Thanks, you're right. They are on there. That I can answer! See http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/local/index.html Texas State Libaray has: OFFICE OF THE TAX ASSESSOR-COLLECTOR TAX ROLLS, 1838-1910 Reel 119401 1838-1881 (and more) Last time I email them and asked how much the roll of microfilm would cost and got a price about $18 a roll I think. You can also interlibrary loan them. Your library may charge the postage to return the films though. Jeri Cynthia Samples wrote: >Jeri, I don't know if they even still exist. Oran Lee Ford was found dead in the seat of his pickup truck in north Red River Co either Thursday or Friday of last week after being missing since Saturday. It appears he got stuck, laid down in the seat of his truck and died. He was 74. His wife was Betty Lewis Ford. He was diabetic and had high blood pressure. He did not have his medicine with him and I assume no cell phone. Sad. Jim Giddens Paris, TX

Thanks, you're right. They are on there. I had a printout from the LDS site which has about the same things and I either forgot to look for tax lists or they didn't have them listed. Looks like there were several things I missed. I'll go over there one day this week and see what I can find. Looks like tax records start with 1838. On the list of marriage records for Red River County, I have found one that says " DO NOT ISSUE" Can someone tell me EXACTLY what this means? Thanks Jo Cox Arkansas Ozarks
Jeri, You are great! Thanks so much for all the help and information. I have copies of all the land records in Red River Co. from 1850 on because I was under the impression that was when he came into TX. It has only been this week that I discovered that he and a younger brother went out to TX in 1836 and were there through the Mexican American war, returned to TN where they both married and then went back to TX. To everyone else: It just shows that even with family folklore you should take notes and listen. My nana told me several times when I was young that I qualified for UDC, DAR, and yes even the DRT. I just figured all these years that she was wrong. Charmaine Charmaine Riley Holley archivehobbit@mac.com "...but hobbits have a passion for family history." - Tolkein in Lord of the Rings

Cynthia, I just noticed the reworked web-site. It is great. Thanks for all the work you do. I know there must be much more work than I can imagine. I appreciate your time and effort to make everything easy for us. Also the efforts of all those the transcribe etc for you. Thanks again to all of you. The new 1930 census has been very helpful and information for me. Jim Giddens Paris/Reno, Tx
Jeri, I don't know if they even still exist. If anyone knows, please let me know. There are not in the list of county records that have been microfilmed. I agree that they need to be transcribed, and if I could find them I would do it. I guess someone needs to ask at the courthouse. During this time there was a question as to whether the area was part of Arkansas or Texas, and some records were filed in Arkansas. The marriage records for this period apparently also do not exist. I have checked with just about everybody. Cynthia Samples ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeri J. Most of the responses I've seen posted on this list are for ancestors that are more recent than the research I do. I've been using Red River County records to help find Republic of Texas migrations into other counties in the state. I know my ancestor was there for a while (months, maybe 1-2 years) has anyone transcribed the 1836-1839 Tax Lists ? Jeri Steele
That is a Harrison County or Land district, 3rd Class Land grant. From the Handbook of Texas (http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/tools/article_extracts/mpl1_extract.html ) "'Third class' headrights of 640 acres for heads of families and 320 acres for single men went to recipients who immigrated to Texas after October 1, 1837, and before January 1, 1840." I also found: District: Harrison; Panola County: Panola Grantee: Thomas J. Morris Certificate: 33 Acres: 320 Class: Harr'n 3rd. File: 961 Now the bad news. Land grants were given as conditional certificates. They had to go locate the land. The original grant could have been generated in Red River,or Harrison. Land finally located in Panola or Upshur. The land is named after the grantee. However, the certificate could have been sold to someone else. It does not mean your ancestor lived on the land. With 2 different counties mentioned and 2 separate file, you need to research BOTH to make sure you have the same person. Write: Texas General Land Office Archives and Records Division 1700 North Congress Avenue Austin, Texas 78701-1495 Request an estimates on copying both of these files. Be sure to say you want the entire file copied , surveyors notes, grant certificates, the minutes of the Board of Commissioners if they exist, and the State of Texas Patent. That will get you everything that they have. It will not be cheap($2 per page), but the information is usually invaluable. You will then know the neighbors and when the land was surveyed and who the Chain Carriers were that assisted the Surveyor. (Usually neighbors or kinsman!) A cheaper but very much slower way is to do the research yourself in the land records of Nacogdoches, Upshur, Harrison, and Panola counties. Also, I would check the Red River indexes. During the early Republic of TX time, there were 2 places to record land: Clarksville in Red River County and in Nacogdoches. If either of these people turn out to be provable as your ancestor, you will be eligible for the Sons of the Republic of Texas! You are so right, having it somewhere other than RRCO would make sense. What was I thinking. Not having lived in the county, I did not know about South Lake. However, South Lake sounds great to me. Cathy

Paris News; William Clem 'Bob" Shelby, 62 of Hurst, formerly of Red River Co. died Wednesday in Bedford. Funeral Saturday at Tuggle Springs Cemetery in Red River Co. Born 1941 in RR Co, the son of John & Geraldine Wilkins Shelby. He married Zona Lamon in 1960 in Dimple. His mother lives in Blossom. I don't know him but I know we have Shelby in our group.
