No idea Carlene. LOL Daddy must have read it in some book, and then quoted it to us. Something about spooks and now my mind is blank. I was about 7 in those days. We played outside and near dark we would climb up in the back of Daddy's Ford pickup, and say"the witches are coming toooonight, and I can still remember how we would hop down out of the back of the truck and run inside, and we were all shaky and trembling. The "we", was my sister, Kathy about 8 or 9, my little brother Mike about 5 or 6, and me. We could hear the coyotes howling, too. They spooked us a little, but not much. They were all around, but pretty far away. Well, I best go for this time. I was bumped off the list for awhile, and I really missed everyones talk, especially the rambling. Bonnie, I pretty much know the roads, but I like to double check the "numbers" to make sure I have them right. I really are thankful that about all the old county road have the numbers road signs at the intersections. Sometimes I get my directions turned around in my head and am going north when I am going west etc etc etc. I am not one of those me that does not ask directions or look at a map. I watch my dad do that when I was you, and I promised myself as a boy that I would not be stubborn about it. Other than that, I give my dad a score of 99.9%. Later, Jim G Paris (make that Reno), Tx p.s. Reno is trying to get our own post office. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bonnie Shiro" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, August 07, 2005 4:50 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Kerbow Lake memories (rambling) > Thanks Jim and Sam, > I guess I could look at a map too, but you are so nice, I figured you might > do it for me. Thanks Jim and Sam, I guess I could look at a map too, but you are so nice, I figured you might do it for me. I have almost the same problem about colorblindness, and my Daddy was colorblind, too. My two sons have it to a lesser degree than complete colorbindness, or so we are told. I may have already told how Daddy told us about it when we were living in Colorado in the mid 50's. He said he would not know when a traffic light was green, and we said," well, how did you know it was okay to go"? and he said he just did what the other drivers did. He got a warning once because he was driving too slow on the highway, there in Co. He learned to drive on gravel roads and did not have to get a license when he first drove some car. The first one he rode in was when he was about 8 years old, and it was somewhere in Wessen Texas. That was the way he said "western". It may have been around Midland/Odessa, but I am not sure. He did not talk much, but he would take spells when he would talk to all of us at home and told stories that were just great to us. He played tricks on us, and he would go outside in the summer at night and scratch on the window screen and say"Red-Eye and Bloody-bones", and really get tickled when we would scream. Well, I think I am like him a lot, and so I guess I best hush so ya'll can wake up. Jim, you pretty well have the location of Kerbow Lake right. The lake was owned by several different people that used it as a club lake. In fact, my sister in law still has her family's shares in it, but no one ever uses it anymore, except for water for cattle. The house where Bunky lives is the house that Bunk Cremeen's wife was raised. Also, Cynthia should know close to where it is, because the road goes on through Birmingham, and comes out at Batesville. Cynthia! Oh my gosh, of course I remember you! You were the glamour teenager when I was a kid. How are you doing? You have a son and daughter, right? My dad passed away 26 years ago, but Mom's remarried and lives in Carney, OK. Bub is married with 5 kids, lives in Dallas. Judy is raising a grandson in Austin. I still miss Verna and your grandparents so much. By the way the crow flies, Kerbow (small lake) is about 10 miles southwest of Clarksville. If in a car, drive from Clarksville on 37 south about 10 miles and take the Fulbright road FM 411. From this point it is a curvy 3 miles to Fulbright but about half way to Fulbright, take a right (north) on CR 1272 (I think). After this is maybe a mile to Kerbow Lake but my memory is a little fuzzy on just how to get there from this point. From looking on the county map, I would guess from 1272 take 1304 and that would lead you to the lake. Sue and I were there one more time before we got married and have not been back sense. After looking at another map, I bet it is feed by Cuthand Creek. Sounds like we need to take a memory lane ride to Kerbow for our anniversary trip. Sue's younger brothers were impressed with me because I did not run when they spotted a snake in the edge of the grass at the gate. Fact is, I never saw the snake and did not really know what they were runny around in circles for. I a legally color blind, and it is hard for me to pick out similar colors in grass and trees. When squirrel hunting, I could not spot them if they were not moving, if they stopped, I still see they if I kept my eye on them and did not look off. I bet Sam or John and others can tell us the size of Kerbow Lake and who's property it is on. Kerbow Lake, the first time I ever talked to my wife, was at Kerbow Lake. Her cousin Donald Chesshir (my best friend) had earlier pointer her out to me as we were circling the square in Clarksville on a Saturday afternoon and she was standing on the corner of Main and Walnut. This would be the summer of 1958. About 2 weeks later Donald asked me if I wanted to go to a family reunion at Kerbow Lake, he said "my cousin (that was standing on the corner) will be there". I went to Kerbow Lake and on the 19th of Aug, we will celebrate our 45 wedding anniversary. I wonder what is in that water at Kerbow, maybe Poke Salett. I am from Oklahoma and so have my folks. I would not touch it or any other green type stuff, but my parents did in early spring, and Mama says it was because they were hungry for fresh green growing stuff in the old days. I say well, it sure "smells" green. LOL Mama likes mustard greens the best and I have been known to eat a little of it. But not the rest. Mama is in Paris hospital today, as her lanoxin(heart medicine), is out of order and she was having arrithmyia(sp?), irregular heartbeat. She has not had this problem since she had pacemaker installed over two years ago. She is 89 and a half, and my brother and neice are with her today. I cannot go as I have trouble walking and stay at home most of the time. I have to be in Tyler, Tx orthapedic clinic on the 16th, so hopefully Mama will be out of hospital and able to talk to me after I get the back looked at. I hope all are making it out there. I heard it called scrapple....haha
We never did the Poke Salad. However, my granddaddy used to cook ham hocks with cornmeal dumplings. They were wonderful!!! Rosalie/New Boston
Head cheese!!!!!!!!!! oooooooh, it's terrible..........my bunch calls it sous...........sows...........whatever it's called, it's horrid. My grandmother made polk salad w/scrambled eggs, wild onions w/scrambled eggs, head cheese and chitlins! She's even barbequed racoon. My dad said it tastes like a wet dog smells and me.............I just took his word for it! Grandma is 93 now and we still tease her make about being afraid to heat her chilli for fear of what she's made it out of!
Well maybe the spelling goes with the area too. Scrabble/Scrapple....Salad/Sallet. Whatever works, as long as those around you know too. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, August 06, 2005 10:48 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Poke Weed (and other names) > I heard it called scrapple....haha > > > ==== TXREDRIV Mailing List ==== > > > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection.
