    3. There is a great Korean War Memorial in DC. All the statues of soldiers look like they are looking right at you from the warfront. I believe that Audie Murphy was from Greenville, TX and there is a memorial for him there. http://www.audiemurphy.com/welcome.htm Nancy - Mesquite, TX -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, September 02, 2005 8:34 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Old Soldier Sam, Your e-mail reminded me of a couple of things. The Korean war is sort of the "forgotten war". I can remember home town boys going, but even then, there was not the publicity there has been with other wars. I went to college when I was middle-aged, and could not find as much research on that war, either. It has just been as if we don't even remember it or those who fought in it. I salute you for having participated and having the attitude you did. You did a great service to our country. On the lighter side, (not genealogy at all) I am glad to hear from someone who still remembers Audie Murphy. Wasn't he from Texas, too? 3. I need to say something here concerning old soldiers. As you all know Vietnam was a very unpopular war and we who served were not treated very nice when we came home. Most of us went to work, got married and raised our families but a few of course did not. And Hollywood focused on those few and stereotyped us all as walking time bombs and drug users and such. I recently attended a unit reunion for the company I was with in Vietnam, now serving at Fort Sill, preparing to go to Iraq soon. As we old soldiers visited the young soldiers at Fort Sill that day, they gave us a Huge Welcome Home and Thanked us for our service as we got off the bus there! Iraq may not be a popular war either but God Bless our young people who are serving our great country today! William F Smith Heavener, OK PS My son-in-law's National Guard company is leaving for New Orleans this morning. Please remember them in prayer

    3. Beverly, although I am not aware that he was George and although I had always thought she was Willie and Willia is such a pretty name now that I think about it, yes, Uncle Gusty is my great uncle, my grandmother's brother. I have a picture from the 1920s, as I recall, of your Aunt Willia, Uncle Gusty, and their daughter Dorothy. My brother Larry and, at a later time, I commented to our mother how pretty Aunt Willia was then. We had only known her as older and with crippled hands from arthritis. We used to go over to visit them, sometime picking up pecans from their huge pecan trees. My husband, mom, dad, and I tried recently to get to Uncle Gusty's house, but as Mom had warned us, the road had been rerouted, leaving no access to the way we used to travel from Gusty's to Nola's and on down to Caroline's. AND we didn't think we would ever make it to Briggins' Cemetery, which is down a one-lane road through the paper company's trees. When we did get to the cemetery, we found that someone had it neatly cleaned. I took some nice pictures there. Grandma would tell of growing up there with her mom, dad, brothers and sisters; of dances and courting; and about the various families that had lived in the houses that we passed going and coming "over to Red River," as we called those trips to visit. Aunt Nola lived down the road from Uncle Gusty as did Aunt Caroline. I remember Aunt Caroline's and Uncle Harry's "swept" yards, no grass but flowers around the house in summer; the hand pump in the yard for that red, iron-tasting water; the unpainted, clapboard house that filled with people as we visited and ate those fine meals that would materialize when we would show up on a Sunday. Beverly, I don't know if they would mean anything to you, but if you want a copy of the family picture that I mentioned above or of the Briggins' Cemetery pictures, I would be glad to scan or copy them for you. Aunt Willia must be buried in Clarksville as the Briggins' Cemetery is much older. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, September 01, 2005 9:11 PM Subject: [TXREDRIV] Re: Lewis > Elaine: > My great grandmother's aunt, Willia Edith Dawson, was married to George > Augusta "Gusty" Lewis. 3. Jim, in reading the many comments about the old soldier, there is no doubt that you helped an old fellow along his way, and I pat you on the back for it. It also put me to thinking about my time in Korea, and with your permission, pass some of it along. I was never accused of being AUDDIE MURPHY, but I did what little I did, and I remember one night, it was kind of cold, around 10 degree, and we were spending the night in a fox hole. I never one time wondered what I was doing in a place like that, or what kind of mistake some person had made to cause that conflict. Instead, I thought boy, here I am, just a kid from the Red River County cotton patches, helping a Country as great as the USA. I felt a sense of pride. To make this as short as I can, I will skip on to a later time. I had gotten home to here in Paris, and for some reason, I hated to go on to Fulbright. Dreaded that I might find some great change of some kind. After walking the streets awhile, the feeling passed, and I went on home, still proud as I could be about that uniform, and what it meant to me. Well, the next day, I was in Fulbright, and met this guy who told me that he wanted to buy me a Coke, since it had been 3 or 4 months since he saw me last. I laughed because it had been more than 15 months since I was home, and I was just glad he was proud to see me again. I hardly ever discuss what things were like over there, because most of it was not very pretty, and I didn't figure anyone would want to hear it. I guess what I am trying to say is that I was not one of those "shafted" to go there, but served what little I did with pride, and I thank that instead of patting me on the back for serving, I should pat the good old USA on the back for letting me serve. After all, the milk and honey we enjoy here, and I do enjoy it, must be paid for by someone. Sorry to babble so much, and the delete button is not hard to use. I also send heart felt prayers to those that did not make it and their family members too.God bless Louisiana and all the other Gulf coast areas that were hit. Thanks. Debra P.S. 3. Today I was told the name of the old soldier. I looked on Yahoo people search, and there he is. I just erased the message I was about to send with his name. I decided to think it over first, it may not be appropriate do so. Beside, there are thousands out there similar to him and he may not want to be singled out. I just suggest the next time you see a WW II veteran, at least shake his hand and tell him thanks. I really made my day. This goes for all that have served at anytime and any capacity. 3. HKeyser, my 7:00 p.m. email answers part of your question. Thanks for correcting my spelling to Acworth. That's what happens when I write without referencing notes...as I continue to do tonight. I just talked to my mom, Ann Moore Hammer, who is 81 and the family historian that we still have in our midst. She reminded me of the following Lewis and Moore family members: *Uncle Augustas (Gustie) Lewis and his wife, Willie; parents of Mickey (deceased--as youth), EmmaDelle (deceased recent years), and Dorothy Lewis Hancock (living in Conroe area) *Aunt Nola Lewis Whitten;married to Ronald Whitten; mother of Charlie; grandmother of Wanda Whitten Allen (deceased) and Charles *Aunt Caroline Lewis ? Moore(different Moore from my maternal grandfather, Charles Burton)--She married Harry Moore sometime after her first husband was gunned down in the front year by a former "suitor" of Caroline's--She is listed in the 1900 RR census as a widow, living with her father Winchester Dane Lewis--I cannot remember her children's names--I'll look that up. Winchester Dane and Charlotte Mitchell Lewis are buried in Briggins Cemetary and had other daughters who moved into Oklahoma: Nancy Jane and Mandy. Grandma's brother Charlie had sons Howard and John and a daughter,---Lewis Cook. Howard and his wife, Ted, lived in Oklahoma City, where they worked at Tinker AFB until retiring at Broken Bow. I think Howard still lives in Broken Bow although Ted died a few years ago. John and Cora lived in RR Co., I think, They had J.R.(county commissioner at one time) and Wilma Lewis (??can't recall married name). The daughter had children: Duane and ??Dale and Elaine. My maternal grandfather was Charles Burton Moore, son of James Burton and Georgie Ann Hooper Moore. He was born in Cass County, Tx., and is shown with his brother Will in the 1900 census in RR Co., working for Buck Clark. Mom tells the story that Grandpa had worked as a share cropper, perhaps for Clark. Grandpa did credit Buck Clark with stopping Grandpa's drinking as Clark gave him an ultimatum to stop drinking or lose his job. He and Grandma moved from RR after their daughter Mamie died of a quick killing malaria around 1926, I believe. Grandpa Moore had many other brothers and sisters: James Dempsey, Ruben, Mattie, Meggie, Rosa, Henry, Annie, Joe, and Bell. Henry, Joe, and Bell also lived and died in Broken Bow. I have some pictures from 1920sof the Cold Spring School with none of the children identified if anyone needs this scanned and sent for records. Grandma Moore went to Greenwood Church. Bet you're sorry you asked after receiving an unabridged epistle!! Joan Elaine P. S. Mom said that she remembers hearing that Grandpa Lewis's stories of the "War of Rebellion" were different from others' of RR Co. and that he often mused over the war stories told around the square in Clarksville. Also, after acquiring a car for transportation, Aunt Nola and Aunt Caroline would go to town every Saturday as was the custom of rural life of the times. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, September 01, 2005 6:43 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Old Soldier > Joan , who were some of your Lewises and Moors of Acworth I knew some of > the > Lewis and Moors when i was a young boy in Acworth' > > > > > ==== TXREDRIV Mailing List ==== > > > > ============================== > Jumpstart your genealogy with OneWorldTree. 3. My maternal grandmother was a Lewis, the daughter of Winchester Dane Lewis, a proud soldier in the G.A.R. who settled in Ackworth area after the Civil War. My grandmother Louisa married Charles Burton Moore and lived in Ackworth area too until the death of their teenage daughter caused them to move to McCurtain County, Ok. That is the Lewis connection, including her brother Gustie, and sisters, Nola and Caroline, who remained in the Ackworth area. I had a Great Aunt Maggie Lewis, who was married to Grandma Moore's brother Charlie and who also lived and, I believe, died in Broken Bow, McCurtain County, Oklahoma. So, is the Maggie Lewis of your reference our contemporary or from this long, distant past? The Formby to Fomby connection is distant: my husband is, going back in time from father backward--without my checking my records--, Bryan I, Lucius, Robert Benton, Eugene Nathan, Aaron, Nathan; back in place from Spiro, Ok., to Troup Co., GA. I understand from message boards by an amazing researcher Marine, that the Fombys from Ardmore, Ok., area are from the same Formby Virginia to Georgia line. So, you tell me if we're related by marriage. Don't you just love puzzles? I like questions like this as I've not thought of Uncle Charlie in a long time. I'm a very new 58--having just had a birthday--but I remember Uncle Charlie's death and his body lying in state on Grandma's kitchen chairs put together to support a coffin and the viewing being in Grandma's and Grandpa's living room. That must have been in the 1950s, a simple time. Oh, my! AND do you know about RR Gen. Soc. seminar in Oct.? Thanks, J.
