    3. That would be appreciated. The only names that I know are in the email. My parents, Ann and Debs Hammer, still live in Broken Bow and are active in church and the Senior Citizen Center there, and Mom knows the whereabouts of some Lewis relatives. My brother Mark and his wife, Donna, live in Beavers Bend, so we take our travel trailer up to Beavers Bend a couple of times a year, spring and fall. Thanks again. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bonnie Shiro" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, September 02, 2005 12:50 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Formby >I enjoy reading all that you have written JElaine. 3. I was returned from Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. On my way home I saw a parking lot full of buses, police cars, trucks, etc at the deserted Big Town Shopping Mall. News helicopters were circling overhead. It either looked like a distribution point or perhaps they were opening the mall for refugees? There is so many people helping that never makes the news. 3. Audie was indeed from Texas, but not from Greenville. I thought for a long time he was from Farmersville, Texas. However, I heard some lady on a Paris radio station say that he was born in a small community between Greenville and Farmersville. The exact name escapes me right now, but at least the Greenville-Farmersville area is close. I hope to one day visit the Korean Memorial. 3. We have heard from Maydell Smothers, who lives in Plaquemine, LA; their town came through just fine. Her husband, Tom Ivan Smothers, is buried in Briggins. Today marks the end of WWII; the treaty was signed with the Japanese on the USS Missouri. In Henderson Co. we had a ceremony honoring those who served. One man, recently deceased, was a foxhole buddy of Audie Murphy. When Audie did something, Onclo Airheart was right behind him. The Texas Historical Commission urged all counties to hold observations, and one was held in Austin.

    3. (this is lengthy rambling about the Korean War, not genealogy, delete now if not interest) I do think this message deserves a better description and respect than rambling. Yes, about the Audie Murphy Museum on I-30 at Greenville. My family visited it 2 or 3 years ago. It is combined with a Cotton (Farming) Museum. To get to it, you need to heed the signs on I-30 or you will easley drive past the exit. As already said, there is a very impressive bronze statue of him in battle action that can be seen on the north of of I-30 on the fart east side of Greenville if you are looking for it. I understand 1 or 2 other small towns say they are also the home of Audie Murphy. One is Farmersville and I think another one close to it. It is my thinking that maybe his farmer dad (family) moved to Greenville when he was a small boy. I remember see the Audie Murphy movie, "To Hell and Back" in the Avalon when the movie was new. Must have been in the 50s. I want William and over Korean vets to know that for one, this 3rd grader was very supportive of the soldiers serving in Korea. I would living in Yoakum, Tx, I would check the newspaper every day to see the map with arrows show the troop movement. Us young boys favorite game was to "play" combat soldier, digging fox holes in the vacant lot next door, building a bunker our of stones and old fence post, crawling in the grass as low as I could with my toy gun. I still have a few newspaper clippings in my scrapbook of the Korean War. One about the battle On Vegas Hill titled "Vegas Hill Recaptured by Marines (letters over a inch high and the hill "Old Baldy. Another large letter headline I have is "U.S. Bombers Smash Reds on Old Baldy" (western Korea). The article says "The Chinese Communist launched one of their heaviest assaults in months against Old Baldy over the week-end and the fight still continues. Both clippins have pictures of wounded or exhausted soldiers. Another picture of the F-86 Sabre, and the Russian BIG-15, Also a news clipping of returning prisoner of war camp in Korea, Maj. Gen William F. Dean, with his many nieces, nephews and grandchildren at his home in Berkeley, Calif. Another clip of Gen James A. Van Fleet, former Eight Army commander, leaving the White House after a "chat" with President Eisenhower. . I am not sure, maybe Vegas Hill and Old Baldy are the same hill, maybe some of you Korean Vets can straighten me out on this. My point is, that if this little boy was supportive of the soldiers and thought of them as heroes, I am sure there were millions more doing the same, we were just silent in the eyes of the press as far as I am concerned. I do remember going to the funeral at Tuggle Springs of a relative soldier that was killed in the very early action of Korea. His brother Harvey Fryar is a resident of Regency Home. Another brother was killed in WW II. One was George and the other Harold. The old scrap book is destroyed over the years, but I still have the pages in a box. 3. Same from me. Counts you too, for being a military person, doesn't it Jim? I figure anyone who does time in the military deserves our thanks for as much peace as war soldiers. Does that make any sense? I do not mean "Do time" as a slur as if it were jail, but honourable people who put in their time as soldiers, and are proud and happy to serve our country. I thought I could be a soldier when I was about 18 or 19, but was too small and skinny and did not even think about the fact that soldiers have to be able to do all kinds of hard work as well as physical training. Considering I weighed 81 pounds when I graduated from highschool and am 5'2" and have this scolosis, I would not have passed the physical exam, but I wanted to help. I wanted to go to Norfolk, Va, or maybe it was Birmingham, Al. Sounded like good places to an Okie. 2. I just wanted to say that I am very proud of Texas for being so unselfish and immediately taking these evacuees. All of my family were hit by Katrina, but luckily and with God's help, were not flooded out. Other states are now offering to take evacuees and that should ease the burden of Texas. I think it was very touching the way they stepped up. Jerri

    3. Gene and Lynn, This is Bonnie in Oklahoma, and I started to send a message to you earlier, but figured you might not be able to email. I am sorry to hear of Lynn's problem, but am glad you both are still alive. I will be praying for both of you and everyone affected by the storm. 1. Re: [TXREDRIV] Re: Not genealogy--Hurricane victims
    2. Very correct. I saw pictures of some cemeteries over the last few days in LA and MS completely under water or above ground structures opened up with coffins scattered. This alone is going to take some serious accurate work to replace the proper burials in the proper places. The good news is alot of records these days are electronic and also on the Internet so there are several copies. From an IT standpoint, there should be backup tapes for their electronicly stored documentation. From an historical standpoint, we are seeing similar effects that the Civil War had on these types of records and also storm effects of the "old" days. Think about what effect a normal storm could have had on some of those old structures that housed records and how easily files were destroyed. It is sad to think about the history that could be lost, but then again that is what our great hobby is for, to preserve the past for future generations. I know many people that have researched in these areas and even written books on family, records and local history. This is something that our hobby has done to help in situations like this. BTW, there are already thousands in D/FW now they say and I heard this morning they are bringing in 25 thousand more this weekend. Reunion Arena and the Dallas Conv Center are being used for displaced citizens. We will get through this as a country just like all the other natural disaters and it will renew a hope in our country. 2. Yes, Audie Murphy was from Tx. Greenville has a museum. I have 2 pictures of him that were taken on a movie set. I bought them at a garage sale several years ago. He's one of my favorite actors and favorite soldiers. I salute all who've done the country a service by serving in the military. It's an awesome thing they do. Marilyn Detroit

    3. William, did you know any Formbys in Heavener? Although my husband's father, Bryan Joel Formby I, died in Spiro when my husband was a teen, his grandmother, Emily Dyer Formby, and Uncle Champ Kenneth "Doc" Formby, and family lived in Heavener, and his grandmother and Uncle Doc died there as we understand. We go up that way sometime to decorate his father's grave in Spiro and to go to Bella Vista, Arkansas, where we have had property for years. ----- Original Message ----- From: "william smith" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, September 02, 2005 8:39 AM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Old Soldier >I need to say something here concerning old soldiers. 2. Sam, Your e-mail reminded me of a couple of things. The Korean war is sort of the "forgotten war". I can remember home town boys going, but even then, there was not the publicity there has been with other wars. I went to college when I was middle-aged, and could not find as much research on that war, either. It has just been as if we don't even remember it or those who fought in it. I salute you for having participated and having the attitude you did. You did a great service to our country. On the lighter side, (not genealogy at all) I am glad to hear from someone who still remembers Audie Murphy. Wasn't he from Texas, too? Doris

    2. It is not just the vital records, but cemeteries, churches and their records, historic buildings, and so much more that were destroyed. It is just unimaginable what these people and their families outside that area have been through in the past several days. Please do what you are able to do to help the refugees that may be in your area. Walker Co TX initially had over 500 here in our county and last night they moved 350 more from the Houston Astrodome to the Red Cross shelter in Huntsville. And I know just about every county in East Texas has a lot of people that have fled Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
