John, (and all) I found the write up of the old Victorian 3 story house in Martha Stroud's book, "Red River County-Gateway to Texas". It has a picture of the house on page 314. It is The Hocker House. There is a history of the house and a detail of occupants over the years, then inthe early 1970's the house was sold to Charles and Michelle Ross from Fort Worth. They moved it to Queen Street in Fort Worth. Martha said they would visit with her at the Carousel (gift shop Martha owned). On Yahoo city and street search, I do not find a Queen Street, there is a Queensbury just west of W-I-35 and south of loop I-820. I find a Charles Ross and a Michelle Ross in Ft Worth but listed at separate addresses and neither on Queensbury. There phone numbers are listed. They are south side of down town F.W. by north of I-820 loop. The house was built in 1890 by Dr Preston Hocker, a 5,000 sq ft house with 10 large rooms plus bathrooms and closets and halls ad turrets. Besides being a doctor, the owned a saw mill and a hardware store. Teels lived there and taught dancing an gymnastics. then sold to Anna Patterson that gave piano lessons, the despair, then during WW II it was divided into apartments. Also, I just e-mailed Judge Lovett for a clarification on the Hocker house as being a different house than the old house where the new P.W. was built. I am now remember that the Hocker house must have been where the bank drive-inn windows are now (but not the main bank), on main just east of the Piggly Wiggly. I had forgotten about that space. Yes that all fits as Judge Lovett said, and the sloping ground toward the church and more slop as it approaches the Delaware Creek. You were right, Jim. Marris Chapel is hardly two miles SW of Bogata. Approaching Bogata from Paris on US271, turn right toward an isolated water tower. I'll check and report, but the last time I drove by there were scattered homes but no chapel, gin or store. I don't think the community was ever incorporated. The name Marris is an example of the fact that not all mis-spellings are unintentional. T'is said there was a rift within the family, which split into Marris and Morris. Roy Marris, a farmer and retired Agriculture Dept official, and is currently listed in Who's Who in America, lives in the Marris Chapel area. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Giddens" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, September 04, 2005 11:43 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] funeral home// correction? >I may have miss stated the location of Marris Chapel. Marris Chapel is south off 271 . To reach this cemetery, take 37 from Clarksville to the 4 way stop in Bogota, where 37 junctions with 271. Turn west on 271 like you are going to Paris, go to the Rugby sign. Proceed from Rugby south 3.1 miles to Marris Chapel on FM 410. There will be a right or curve to the west. ANd there will be a gravel road that goes south or straight. The cemetary is on the left on the gravel road right after you leave the FM 410 that turns to the right. Jim, can you email me or post the Ward's that you have found? My birth family is Ward. My stepgreatgrandfather and birth greatgrandmother are buried there, along with two little boys of theirs. Their names were James and Bertha Wiggins. My birth mother is also buried there. Her name is Lorene Joyce Ward Lay. Ever since she was buried there, she never had a marker. This past spring her brother...David Ward and her sister.....Vera Ward Rowe..and I met here in Paris. They bought my lunch and then took me to the monument place. They let me pick out a tombstone and let me decide what should be written on it.....and they paid for it. Years ago when I found out that I was adopted and then did some research and found who I was....and who they were, I went to Marris Chapel. There was a metal marker from the funeral home left on Lorene's grave. It was on the north side of James Wiggins. Years have gone by and that marker is long gone. The caretaker recently told my aunt Vera that he poked a pipe in the ground on the south side of Bertha's plot and he hit something hard so Lorene must be there. We all dissagreed with him. I got a nice lady out of Blossom that does Wichin (sp) with rods. She came to the cemetary with me and walked over their plots. No one was buried next to Bertha, but someone was buried next to James. And we did not discuss where we thought Lorene was bured at, prior to her walking over the plots. So she had no idea where we were hoping Lorene would be. There were others buried in places that there was no tombstone, too. We will never know who is buried there....but we now have a tombstone for my birth mother. Harris Chapel? I have family there too. Andrew J. and Missouri Francis Miller Cornett. They were my (adopted) great grandparents. Harvey Cornett was their son, Leighton Cornett was their grandson and then there is me, their greatgrandaughter.. Thanks for letting me ramble. Debra in Paris
I may have miss stated the location of Marris Chapel. Every thing is correct except that. I think the location I gave is for Harris Chapel. The RRR does not give the location for MarrisChapel and Community, but according to some of the names and one teacher listed as Miss Gussie Norwood of Deport, I figure it is near Deport of back toward Bogata or even the toward McCoy is Wards are listed in the school and also on the McCoy baseball team of 1931. Marris Chapel school also list Weddels. Maybe this is it: I was searching the RRR for the old Victorian house and ran across a cemetery I have walked before. It is Marris Chapel Cemetery. One of the surnames listed is Weddle. The cemetery is pretty well kept, it is about 1/4 mile on off of the highway. Marris Chapel is southwest of Clarksville less than 2 miles on Hwy 37, actually Business 37 since the loop was put in. I saw Saturday that the extension of the loop to continue east and hit 82 on the east side of Clarksville can now been seen, but still a lot of work to do. Also they are working again on the Scatter Creek bridge and it is moving pretty fast now. The new one will be about 3 to 4 feet higher than the old one. Geri, The closest cemetery name I can come up with is Madras Cemetery. According to the Dale's Cemetery Records book, they list the cemetery as unknown. So they must not have come across a marker for Jennie Ballard during their surveys of the county cemeteries. I have just recieved a dead certificate for Jennie BAllard, wife of Roy Ballard. She died on pneumonia on Feb .22, 1937. The certificate indicates that T.E. Sanders & Son handled the burial. She was buried kin Maddri (?) or Waddri (?) I can not make out the word. Is the funeral home still in business? Are the records any where? I can not find any cemetery that is close to this spelling. I am just now getting it going again. My office, located immediately west of the Episcopal Church (now the Old Church Theater) was converted from the Dorsey Hotel in 1969 by Bert Holster. My mother first moved the Red River County Credit Bureau into it and I moved in January 1, 1970 when I finished my term as County Attorney and moved out of the courthouse. As best as I can recall our street address was 506 West Main. It was located where the washateria is now located. The Connerly house on the north side of my office, where Dr. Kumar's office is now located, was also destroyed when my office burned. The fire was on September 17, 1980, right at the end of the hottest summer on record. The three story Victorian was immediately west of my office and was moved and restored in Ft. Worth sometime in the early 1960s. I attended kindergarten there with Miss Hattie Hocker in 1938-9. One of the early homes was located in the center of the block where Piggly Wiggly was built. The house was the only structure in that block and the vegetation had covered it almost completely. The Main Hotel was located east of Stiles and, indeed, behind all the businesses on the east side of the square. The hotel spanned the entire block north to south. I understand that there was an overhead walkway across the street from the Main Hotel to the Opera House, but that was before my time. Indeed, I never remember seeing the Opera House, which was just east of the Main Hotel. Our friends Bill Wright and Gladys Walker operated a restaurant in the Main Hotel for many years and it was the principle meeting place for all our local civic organizations. Bobbie Wright and Stanley were their children. Sounds like your group has fun with reminiscing. So enjoy ... Jim On Mon Aug 29 13:06 , 'Jim Giddens' <[email protected]> sent: Jim, My Red River County e-mails buddies (Rootsweb site) have been discussing old hotels in Clarksville. One is the Dorsey Hotel. It this the same building you had your office in that burned? I remember being in it. In fact you did wills for Sue and me in 1972. I look at the wills package, but the street address is not on it. What was the address? What year was your building burned? Just where was this building in comparison to where the present day Piggy Wiggly is. Am I correct that a huge 3 story old Victorian house was where the Piggy Wiggly is, and the house was purchased and moved to Ft Worth. Also what was the name of the old hotel that was behind the Stiles/Blackmon Drug? I tried to call Lucille at home, but no answer. Pardon me for taking you time but thanks for your help. Our group likes to dig into history and memories of places and people of Red River Co. Jim Giddens Reno, Tx
Sure were a bunch of U.S. Flags out today on main street in Clarksville, one about every 100 ft on both sides of west main and out on Peter's Prairie Road several flags out next to the road, such as at the Lowe's and the Skidmore's. Drove out to Lanes Chapel Cemetery. A look of works is going out there. Somebody's uncle that lives in New York gave a lot of money to fix up the cemetery, community center and the church. Much has already been done such as a pavilion and the cemetery and a very nice iron fence around the complete, except the extended area next to a creek. They will figure that out later. Pews for the pavilion are on the way. All is very nice. Take a look if you get a chance. Red River County is sure needing the some rain and has missed getting rain recently when it was all around. At least that is the statement of my brother-in-law that has about 175 acres and some cow (not sure how many, but he has been selling the mean one recently). His pools are low and pasture grass looked good to me but he said it looked good but it was thin. He has bought the hay off of a neighbor. Watch them bring in two loads (10 bales each) of those round bales. (We watch about 40 minutes but they had been doing it all day, this was about 3 p.m. He says he now has enough have for the winter counting the square bales he already has put away. The double rig hay hauling trailer was about 60 to 70 feet long and carried 10 bales. I was neat to see him just walk along the trailer, flick a lever and the bales would tumble off the trailer. When I was hauling hay as a teen, it would have taken us a month to haul that much hay. CHS is undefeated 2 weeks into the regular season. (check it out) Jim Giddens Paris, Tx
I'm forwarding this letter that I got from a distant genealogy cousin with whom I have exchanged family information. They didn't know anybody else in Texas so she wrote to me to say "Thank you" to Texas and I'm passing it on. Sharon ----- Original Message ----- From: Robert Schmielau To: Black, Sharon Sent: Saturday, September 03, 2005 1:35 PM Subject: Lambert, Little Hello Sharon, This email is to tell someone, in the great state of Texas, how glad I was to see the Texas National Guard helicopters arrive in New Orleans this morning. The Astrodome complex is awesome. My daughter and granddaughter left New Orleans early Sunday morning. They made it to Montgomery, AL without any problems. They drove on up to Seymour, IN on Wednesday. At this point, we have reason to believe that their home sustained little damage and that the area is dry. They live about 2 blocks from the Mississippi, between Louisiana and Napoleon. They have friends they have not heard from yet. The internet has been a blessing during this crisis. We have no idea what will happen next. Thanks again to the state of Texas. Your genealogy friend, Arlene Schmielau
I copied and pasted just the 1st couple of paragraphs (it was pretty long) from Friday's Paris News. www.theparisnews.com This says to me that there are cities and communities all over (such as Lubbock) opening their doors to help those from Louisiana. I also saw 4, 18 wheelers on the Wal-mart lot with sign of accepting donations to haul to Katrina victims. JimG ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Red Cross doing preplanning for Camp Maxey By Phillip Hamilton The Paris News Published September 02, 2005 It's just a matter of time before hurricane Katrina evacuees start coming to Camp Maxey, Lisa McAllister, executive director of the Lamar County Chapter of the American Red Cross, said today. "The state is still working on Camp Maxey, and I feel it is just a matter of time before it is put into operation," McAllister said. She said organizers have underestimated the capacity of shelter sites, creating the need to open standby facilities like Camp Maxey, which can house about 400 evacuees.
Lubbock, TX -- out in West Texas -- is receiving people too. They have places for 1,000 right now, and are working on more. One woman came with her grandchildren from Lousiana. She said that she was so thankful that her family is safe and that she is going to work with the Red Cross to help other families coming in. Texas Tech has invited students and facility who are displaced to come here to school. The news last night said that some students had already transfered in. The United Supermarkets in Lubbock collected over $88,000 yesterday...that was reported on the 10pm news. It is so awesome to see everyone come together to help their brothers in need.
I had not gotten the figures yet. Camp Maxey has to get air conditions and get preped for a food service, before they will let victim stay there. But I think they are trying very hard; Also heard Thursday afternoon that the Turner Pipe company, that is in the B&W plant on 19th SW, is going to need 300 workers soon. They had a plant somewhere in Lousiana that was heavely damaged or just plain no existant. They are moving that plants operations to this one here in Paris.
My source says it will be those big tents. Time will tell. I was told today that Camp Maxey, north of Paris about 5 miles, has be federalized for this purpose, taking in those from Katrina. Jim, or anyone else who knows of people from New Orleans who are now located in other states: If you can pass the word to someone at North Lamar, the New Orleans School District is wanting all teachers, administrators, staff, and parents of school students from New Orleans Parrish to contact them at 877-771-5800. Gene, thanks for the link to GNC. I found my cousin's name...........she is listed as missing, but I also found an email address for someone else searching for her and emailed that person. So, surely I'll learn something before long. Thanks for helping out............it's so very kind of you, especially with all that you're handling yourself. Karen
