    3. Well, I finally found Queen Street in Ft Worth on the Yahoo Map. I think my problems was I had put a "s" on the end of Queen. I'm glad some of you found it, causing me to look again. I would enjoy seeing the old house. Jim Giddens Paris/Reno, Tx

    1. Hocker house picture did not work
    2. Jim Giddens
    3. Well, looks like the picture did not send. I thought maybe it would work from a "copy and paste" with out sending a attachment. Sorry Cynthia if I did a No No. I did also send it direct to Drew and Cynthia. Jim Giddens Paris/Reno, Tx

    3. I was in Halesboro Cemetery southwest of Bogata several years ago, looking at old tombstones and making notes for a newspaper story. I came upon an obelisk, one of those old tombstones that is about 4 ½ feet high, with the husband's name on one side and the wife's name on the opposite side and usually a Bible verse on the front. On the north side of the obelisk was a woman's name and "Wife of . Thompson." Her birth date was listed, but not her date of death. That was surprising, since tombstones of that time always have dates of death. The stones were not inexpensive, and people whose graves the stones marked were the kind of people who stay around, who don't just move away. I walked to the other side of the obelisk and saw the name of the husband, last name Thompson, but I don't remember his first name. The stone listed his date and place of birth - in the 1850s, in one of the Carolinas, and the date he died, in the 1880s. And beneath his name, the explanation: "MURDERED." ! That word, and the fact that the obelisk did not have his wife's date of death, was but one of those questions I always have when leaving any cemetery. Always there are questions. A few days after the cemetery story was in the newspaper, I got a letter from a woman who said she was the murdered man's granddaughter. She said all the family knew about his death was that there was a nighttime knock at the front door of his house, and when he answered, someone shot him dead. She said the family does not know what happened to his wife, where she went, or when she died. The only other tombstone I saw with the explanation "MURDERED" is in a cemetery in Delta County. I don't remember the name of that cemetery, but when I went there, it was all grown up in weeds, and many of the tombstones had been knocked over. Later, a group of people got together and cleaned up the cemetery, put the tombstones back where they belonged. The man buried in the Delta County cemetery was killed by Wil! d Bill Longley. I always enjoyed visiting old cemeteries and writing a bout them, but the newspaper told me to stop. I have a stack of letters from people whose relatives are buried in those old cemeteries, all of the letters congratulatory, but newspaper managers oftentimes aren't impressed by what readers like to read.

    3. Maybe if Drew gets a picture of the Hocker house moved to Ft Worth, Cynthia could place it on the web-site. Personally, I can not imagine such a tall and larger house was moved, but I know it was. I would like to know just how it was done, and only for $1000.00 even in the 70s. I will scan the picture of the house in Gateway to Texas and send it to Drew so he will know what he is looking for, assuming it still looks the same after moving. Anyone else wanting a copy sent to them, let me know. You can request it direct to me at [email protected] Jim G ----- Original Message ----- From: "Debbie Blanton McCoy" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, September 09, 2005 12:03 PM Subject: Re: Re: [TXREDRIV] Hotel information (Clarksville) > Drew, > > You're welcome. 3. Drew, You're welcome. If you have a digital camera, will you take a picture of the house and send it to me? I very rarely ever get to Ft. Worth anymore. Debbie McCoy ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, September 09, 2005 10:59 AM Subject: Re: Re: [TXREDRIV] Hotel information (Clarksville) Thanks Debbie, I had not seen Mike's message. I will look through some more county websites that list more than just tax appraisals. That website is great though and I use it often for research purposes. Meadowbrook was definitely a high quality neighborhood in the 70s. It wouldn't surprise me if that is the house being talked about. I have some friends that still live in that area, but rarely make it out that way anymore. I will try and get out there in the next few days and take a look at it. Thanks, Drew Slate Fort Worth, Tx p.s. I have the GoogleMap on my laptop and it is awesome. I really like the feature of being able to mark sites with notes. It isn't up to date though, and I haven't figured out how far out of date it is. 1. Re: Re: [TXREDRIV] Hotel information (Clarksville)
    2. Thanks Debbie, I had not seen Mike's message. I know it is at least over a year out of date, at least for my side of FW. > > From: "Debbie Blanton McCoy" <[email protected]> > Date: 2005/09/08 Thu PM 08:42:06 EDT > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: Re: [TXREDRIV] Hotel information (Clarksville) > > Drew, > > Did you see Mike Gibson's message? 3. Thanks, Jim. Someone else had said the 60's. That would explain why I never knew about it. She was there and I assume she is correct, but she could be off a little I guess. I hope to catch up on my e-mail soon. 3. Miss Lennox was murdered in her house not a few years back when she was living in it. Details were very brutal. The men thought she would have money in the house but she didn't. They stole her Cadillac and were caught in it the same night when the mugged a man in Dallas. Police in Clarksville were notified, they when to tell her her car had been stolen, but found her dead. Dragged down the stairs by a belt around her neck. She was in her 80s. 2. Drew, I believe the house in C'ville you saw was the restored Lennox home, which is a gem. The house that was moved to Ft. Worth was on US 82, not far from Piggly-Wiggly. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, September 08, 2005 11:11 AM Subject: Re: Re: [TXREDRIV] Hotel information (Clarksville) > Jim, > > I only have what you and John have mentioned. 2. Debbie Blanton McCoy
    3. Correction - - After rereading all the messages, I see that the house was moved to Ft. Worth in 1960. I would have still be there at that time, but I don't ever remember seeing it or knowing that it was there. Debbie McCoy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Debbie Blanton McCoy" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, September 08, 2005 7:42 PM Subject: Re: Re: [TXREDRIV] Hotel information (Clarksville) Drew, Did you see Mike Gibson's message? He found a house on the Tarrant County Tax Appraisal District records that was once owned by Charles & Michelle Ross. He stated that the house was at 1929 Queen Street in Fort Worth. I looked on the appraisal district web site and that house was originally owned by a Charles W. Ross and wife Michelle. The value of that house is listed at $26,700 and is only 700 sq. ft. However, there is another house at 2001 Queen Street which was originally owned by a Charles M. Ross. It is valued at $200,000 and has 3,740 sq. ft. in it, so I think that would more likely be the house that everyone is talking about. Queen Street is located in east Fort Worth, right off Meadowbrook Drive. It's not very far from Meadowbrook Jr. High School where I went to school. It was moved there in 1970 which is after I graduated from high school and left Ft. Worth, so I have never seen it. If you will go to Mapquest and put in the address, it will show you where it is located. Debbie Blanton McCoy Kilgore, TX Jim, I looked in the on-line Tarrant County Tax Appraisal District records, under past owners. I found a Charles Michael and Michelle Ross that once owned land at 1929 Queen Street in Fort Worth. According to Yahoo!Maps, it is located in the Southeast section part of the city bounded on the north by I-30, east by Loop 820, south by Highway 80, and west by Oakland Avenue. If you have any information that would help me track it down, I will be glad to see what I can find. There are a few local museum/history places that might be able to help. Do you have any idea what year it was brought here? That might point me to a certain part of the city. FW expanded and built in a way over the years that I could quickly narrow it down to certain parts of the city. There are a few pockets of very old historic homes, but since it was brought in I doubt it would be in one of those areas. When I was in Clarksville a few years ago, I remember a Victorian home not to far off the square that I think had just been restored. It was one a fairly large lot and I believe yellowish color. It was on the west side of the square and a block off US-82 (I think). Is this a private home or a business? 3. Drew, Did you see Mike Gibson's message? 3. Hello All, If you haven't tried it yet, I suggest you use the Google map. Once you type in your location and get a map, look in the top right corner of the map. There are 3 buttons, Map, Satellite and Hybrid. Click on Hybrid and you will get a satellite view with street names highlighted. I've found that the Satellite and Hybrid options get the most detailed views in cities. Even though you can't zoom in as close in rural areas its still nice to get an idea of what the area looks like. 1. Re: Re: [TXREDRIV] Hotel information (Clarksville)
    2. Jim, I only have what you and John have mentioned. Thanks, Drew Slate Fort Worth, Tx > > From: "Jim Giddens" <[email protected]> > Date: 2005/09/07 Wed PM 11:15:45 EDT > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: Re: [TXREDRIV] Hotel information (Clarksville) > > Drew, > Did you get the Ross names that bought it and moved it and do you have a > picture of it. 2. John and Jim, If you can give me a little more information on this home, I will see what I know or can dig up here in FW. There are many historical homes here, but I am not aware of any history that moved one here from Clarksville. Was this the hotel that you are referring to or a school as one person mentioned? Betty Shiflett Donovan lived there when I was in high school. Her dad was a lineman for Texas Power & Light Co. I do not remember who lived there before or after the Shifletts. The house was torn down at some point while I was gone from Clarksville for my education and early jobs in the 1951 - 1963 time period. On the Shiflett house my recollection is of an old, weathered exterior, perhaps a converted dog-trot design (i.e., doors had been installed to close both ends of the open hallway) cover with vines, bushes and trees. I do not remember that it was more than one story tall, but neither would I argue the point too vehemently. Joan and Buddy Vaughan live in the Sims home (Joan's dad owned Sims Insurance Agency,) where Joan grew up, located next door to the west. Joan can give you a full history of that house if you are interested. Her number is 903/427-2627 and feel free to tell her I suggested you call. The beautiful Victorian I thought you were talking about stood on the south side of the block east of the Shiflett house. Miss Hattie Hocker and her family owned it probably from the time it was built. I would guess it was built in the period of 1890 - 1910, when such architecture was so popular. This is the one moved to Ft. Worth. The Victorian I grew up in at 703 East Broadway (telephone # 328) was built about 1900 and was featured in The New York Times about two years ago as the most beautiful Victorian in Texas (a bit over the top, I thought, but a very nice one, indeed.) My mother's family, Colin and Kate Williams, bought it and moved their family to Clarksville from English in 1929. By my calculation, my mother and Aunt Edith were the only two left at home of their six children. Both of them finished Clarksville High School, my mother, Ruth, in 1925. This class produced Page Keeton, Dean of the UT Law School when I attended and for many years before and after that, and Pat C. Beadle and Don C. Black, who you should remember. Jim On Mon Sep 5 9:46 , 'Jim Giddens' <[email protected]> sent: Jim, Thank you for your interesting information. I got a little confused when you said, "One of the earlier homes" Are you speaking of a different house than the Hocker house (the 3 story Victorian House). Seems to me you are and I remember a different house where Piggy Wiggly was built. I seem to recall a large one or two story house on that spot that Harold Shiflett (about my age) lived in it the 50s. Perhaps it is the same house. Harold had a Mustang Motorcycle. His older sister Betty (I think), is married and lives in the Clarksville area, but it slips me who she is married to. She and husband were at the 9 classes reunion in Dallas recently. I did find the Hocker house in Gateway to Texas. Thanks again, our groups likes the extra details, it give color or life to our ramblings. Jim Giddens Reno, Tx p.s. found the reunion list. Betty's name is Donavan and they live on FM 412. ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: 'Jim Giddens' Sent: Sunday, September 04, 2005 9:28 AM Subject: Re: Dorsey Hotel Location

    3. In a Clarksville Times from Friday February 1959, there is a story about the Sims home being torn down to make room for the new Piggley Wiggley store. The original log building was build before 1842 for J. J. Musgrove. The building was occupied in 1842 by Ebeneazer Allen. Later Capt M. L. Sims held the property until it was sold to George Sunkel for the new store location. There is a picture of the outer walls being torn down to show the original log rooms. Did not get the date of the paper other than Friday Feb and I was researching the 1959 book. 3. Jim, I looked in the on-line Tarrant County Tax Appraisal District records, under past owners. Mike Gibson Mesquite, Texas ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim Giddens To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, September 05, 2005 8:56 AM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Hotel information (Clarksville) John, (and all) I found the write up of the old Victorian 3 story house in Martha Stroud's book, "Red River County-Gateway to Texas". It has a picture of the house on page 314. It is The Hocker House. There is a history of the house and a detail of occupants over the years, then inthe early 1970's the house was sold to Charles and Michelle Ross from Fort Worth. They moved it to Queen Street in Fort Worth. Martha said they would visit with her at the Carousel (gift shop Martha owned). On Yahoo city and street search, I do not find a Queen Street, there is a Queensbury just west of W-I-35 and south of loop I-820. I find a Charles Ross and a Michelle Ross in Ft Worth but listed at separate addresses and neither on Queensbury. There phone numbers are listed. They are south side of down town F.W. by north of I-820 loop. The house was built in 1890 by Dr Preston Hocker, a 5,000 sq ft house with 10 large rooms plus bathrooms and closets and halls ad turrets. Besides being a doctor, the owned a saw mill and a hardware store. Teels lived there and taught dancing an gymnastics. then sold to Anna Patterson that gave piano lessons, the despair, then during WW II it was divided into apartments. Also, I just e-mailed Judge Lovett for a clarification on the Hocker house as being a different house than the old house where the new P.W. was built. I am now remember that the Hocker house must have been where the bank drive-inn windows are now (but not the main bank), on main just east of the Piggly Wiggly. I had forgotten about that space. Yes that all fits as Judge Lovett said, and the sloping ground toward the church and more slop as it approaches the Delaware Creek.
