As I recently did for the WHITE family on Monroe Co - I am going to be posting once a day on the WINN family as I know there are several on the list connected to or interested in this line. I am abstracting from a family file I have, partially taken from the writings of James French Winn, then of Winchester, KY, 14 Nov 1941 - Genealogy of the Family of Jesse Durrett Winn, Sr. I will abstract only family data with a minimum of biography. Jesse Durrett WINN, Sr founder of the WINN families of Clark, Mason and Montgomery Counties in KY, born 13 Apr 1752, supposedly in Albemarle Co VA. The home was between the city of Charlottesville and Monticello, Thomas JEFFERSON's home. Jesse was married twice - 1st to Catherine JOHNSTON, d/o Col. Stephen JOHNSTON of the Rev. War. She was born 14 Oct 1753 - they md 30 April 1770. Jesse was at the Battle of Yorktown, served Virginia Militia. He and Catherine had 11 children: 1 Frances (Fanny) b 7 May 1771. 2 Richard, born 29 Jan 1773 3. Nancy born 31 Aug 1774 4. Stephen Johnston b 11 Oct 1776. 5. Benjamin, b 9 Oct 1778. 6. Clarissa (Clary) b 21 Jan 1781. 7. Braxton Byrd, b 18 Nov 1782. 8. Dolly b 18 Sept 1784. 9 Philip Byrd b 15 Sept 1786. 10. Lucy Clark b 25 Feb 1790. 11. Catherine Byrd (Kitty) b 22 Feb 1792. His wife Catherine died 17 June 1803; he md (2) Mary (Polly) COLBERT (nee GORDON) 8 Sept 1806. They had one son: 1. Jesse Durrett Jr b 30 mar 1811. The family emigrated in 1788 to what was then Fayette Co KY, lived at Bryan Station. He died 22 Nov 1823. He was noted as a wrestler, loved dogs, horses, fiddling and grog. Frances (Fanny) WINN, first child of James D Sr died 30 Dec 1837. Md John COURTS in Caroline Co VA 5 Mar 1788, came to KY and settled in the western part of the state. They had: 1. Polly H COURTS b 27 Mar 1790,md Frederick MOSS 25 Dec 1806 and had 5 children: (1) Braxton Winn b 16 Sept 1807; (2) Frances C MOSS b 15 July 1809; (3) Cassandra W MOSS b 29 Dec 1810; (4) Mary H b 11 July 1812 and (5) Robert H b 11 Feb 1814. 2. Catherine Johnston b 19 Aug 1791.Md Robert FICKLIN 10 Dec 1812. 3. Frances S b 17 May 1793, md Sylvanus M BABGY June 1813, and had 3 children: (1) Albert Kimbrue BAGBY b 29 May 1814; Martha Ann b 30 Oct 1816 and John Courts - no date. John Courts BAGBY md and had at least one son, the Honorable John S. BAGBY who lived at Rushville, IN. 4. Nancy M b 28 Aug 1795. 5. Clara/Clarissa Winn b 23 Aug 1797. 6. Charles H b 6 Aug 1799. 7. William T b 25 Feb 1802. 8. Richard Winn b 16 Mar 1804. 9. John D b 3 Apr 1806, md Elizabeth Brown WINN, d/o Braxton Byrd Winn. No children. 10. Emily J b 1 Apr 1810. 11. Zerelda b 21 Mar 1812. Md Dr. S C PORTER of Bowling Green, KY; died Sept 1864 and had two children: (1) Frances Catherine PORTER and (2) Charles Samuel PORTER b 27 Oct 1842. Frances Catherine md John Arthur HUGHES and had: (1) Zerelda and Beauche (Beauchamp) HUGHEWS. Charles Samuel PORTER md Marie Cecil HARTMANN (b 15 July 1846 Paris, France) 24 June 1874. Beauche HUGHES md D S BARRIGA in Dec 1917, lived in Omaha, NB. Tomorrow's post - Richard WINN.
