This is what I got back: "According to what I know, Newberry was not founded by members of the Newberry family. I checked the phone book and there are no people by the name of Newberry living here. According to the Encyclopedia of South Carolina, the town (and the county) were named in honor of a Revolutionary War hero Captain John Newberry. Captain Newberry must not be a particularly well known hero, because a quick check of my favorite biographical sources does not turn him up. I was told by some one that this area was a great place to pick berries many years ago and that was how the place got its name. For a brief history of the college visit our website: http://www.newberry.edu/ We have a Special Collections that has as its mission the collection and preservation of materials relating to the college, the Lutheran Church in Newberry County and, to a lesser extent, the Lutheran Church in South Carolina. The public library here in town is often a better choice for geneological materials. Hope that helps a bit, Victoria Horst Public Services Librarian" Anyone with any info on theis Capt. John Newberry? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
