    3. Information I have indicates the present courthouse in Ft Worth was constructed in1893. It appears the first courthouse was completed after the Civil War and burned to the ground on March 29, 1876. The second courthouse was started January, 1877, and existed until 1893 when the third one was built. Kermit Rutledge

    3. Hi Carolyn, Glad the Ft. Worth info might have helped. Could be we were getting a new court house some time along in there (1880-1890). I can't remember when ours burned, but I think the one that's there is the third one. Maybe some others out there have more precise dates. That would be nice to think your family helped to build our beautiful stone court house. Sincerely, Kay Davis

    3. Hi Kay Thank you very much for the information. This helps as to the time period. My gr grandfather was a stone mason. Do you have any idea what he would have done as a stone mason during that time in Fort Worth? Thank you Carolyn --- "kay w. davis" <kaywd@flash.net> wrote: > Dear Carolyn, > Just a little brief info about Ft. 3. Dear Carolyn, Just a little brief info about Ft. Worth during 1882-90: Population boomed following the addition of rail lines in 1876 and had reached 6663 people by 1880. The cattle raising, meat-packing, and railroad shipping industries were growing as well, but didn't really get off the ground until about the time your family left. The town was filled with gunslingers, gamblers, and ladies of ill-repute, but thank heavens the good guys won! Many people were getting wealthy and the banks were growing. New homes were needed for the growing population and buildings were popping up. (probably many from stone, and old wooden buildings were probably being replaced with stone ones as well.) My German ancestors came in on the train in 1876 and we've been here ever since. Hope this helps a little. Kay Davis

    1. [TXPARKER-L] Fort Worth History 1890s?
    2. Carolyn Obertein
    3. Hi List I'm new to the list and was wondering if someone could fill me in on the History of Fort Worth 1882 to about 1890. My Great Grandparents George and Mary Ann (Gostelow) Curtis moved to Fort Worth about 1882 with their two sons that were born in Michigan. They had two sons while living in Texas, Fred Curtis born in December of 1882 and Joseph Curtis born in October of 1886 at Fort Worth, Texas. In 1890 they were back in Michigan. I am looking for birth information on the children. I am also trying to find why they went to Texas. I do know that George was a stone mason at the time of his death in 1922. Thank you for any information you may have. Carolyn _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com

    1. [TXPARKER-L] Black Shirley
    2. This older couple asked me to help them find out about Black Shirley. Can anyone help them? Please e-mail them directly. Thanks, Teresa Ivey TIvey35049@AOL.com " My wife and I noticed that you are in Springtown. This attracted my wife's curiosity because her step-grandfather and her mother lived there a long time ago. His last name was Shirley. He, according to my wife, was well known because he lived to be 113 years of age. His nickname was "Uncle Black" Shirley. Perhaps you have heard of him. If so, please let us know by e-mail. I did enjoy your piece called "A Prayer As we Grow Older." My wife and I are both in our late 70s, so this kind of thing has special meaning to us!! Thank you very much. Carson N. Snow, Jr., 1409 N. Broadview Dr., Oklahoma City, OK 73127-3144 <cnsj@juno.com>"

    3. I have found a book compiled by Ava E. Mills, containing stories of women of early Texas who were interview in the late 1930's during the CCC program. One of those women was Sarah Elizabeth Roe, 1855-1946. Sarah's father was William Fletcher who died serving during the Civil war. Sarah married Montgomery Roe in 1873. She was born and lived her entire life one mile west of where Azle is now. She tells about living with her widowed mother in a one room log cabin, about the Indian scares and about her husband serving in the Texas Rangers. I will send a copy of these stories to anyone that is interested, unless overwhelmed with requests. The Fletchers and Hoggards of Azle are my direct kin and I will be glad to exchange information with anyone on these lines. Shirley
