    3. Dear Virginia, I looked in my genealogy address book, and discovered that if you are the Virginia Cottrell that lives or lived in Durant, OK, the name we have in common is "Robbins". My husband's Williams/Crisp/Robbins families settled in Washington Co, AR and later came to Georgetown, TX and on to San Saba, then Throckmorton, then Sterling City, TX. Maybe this is how we met. Could this be right? Kay Davis

    1. [TXPARKER-L] KILBY and JACKSON
    2. Dana Sparks
    3. I am researching the KILBY and JACKSON surnames in Parker County. So far my great-grandfather's name, J. W. JACKSON, and birthplace have not been verified. He died August 1943 in Anson and is buried at Lemley Cemetery next to his wife Annie KILBY who died in 1941. Annie and J. W. owned the farm directly across the road from the cemetery from about 1900 until about 1940. Annie's father was Anthony KILBY. He is found on the 1850 census in Arkansas; the 1870 census in St. Landry's Parrish, Louisiana; and then Parker Co. in 1880. Supposedly he is buried in a cemetery off Authon Road. Family story had it that he was buried at Bethesda Cemetery and thanks to responses from an earlier post to the list I located that cemetery, but not the grave. There is another cemetery called Authon Cemetery that I would like directions to now if anyone knows the location. Here is what I do have about this family and their descendants. It is entirely possible that I do have cousins still living there that may have more information about the KILBYs and JACKSONs. I would like to connect to anyone researching of these names. 1 Anthony KILBY b: Bef. 1820 in NC; occupation blacksmith according to 1870 Louisiana Census. If you made it this far reading this message, I would like to share a little interesting side note. Not knowing the exact location of the farm or Lemley Cemetery, my husband and I met with a builder earlier this year to find a place to build a home in Parker County. The area appeals to us very much. It so happens that when I took my dad for a drive to look at our lot location, he mentioned that the Jackson Farm was in the area. With our map we found it only about three miles north of the location of my new home. My father's family lived there for a few years in the 1920s and later in the 1930s. Thanks for any help. 3. In reference to Linda Noel's inquiry. Elizabeth Fletcher Roe was one of my early ancestors. She lived in Azle, TX and her husband was a Texas Ranger in 1873. She gave this story of events during that time. "I married Montgomery Roe in 1873, and a short time after we were married he enlisted in the Texas Rangers and served under Capt. Willis Hunter. The company's headquarters were at Silver Creek. After my husband enlisted, I again lived in fear. (Indian raids were before this) I knew the danger his work incurred. The rangers had to contend with cattle rustlers, fights between cattlemen and between ranchers and sheepmen, and with desperadoes. Those days the Rangers were called upon to do considerable burying. When some person's body was found, who had been shot or hanged, the rangers were generally notified, and they buried the body. I saw my husband and a couple of fellow Rangers bury the Cantrell women, who were sometimes called by the name of Hill. The Cantrell women were the leaders of a gang of cattle rustlers, and the rumor was that they were among the most troublesome rustlers in the state. The folks interested in the cattle business decided to stop these two women and hanged them to a tree near Springtown. The Rangers would generally receive word that somebody discovered a person hanging to a limb of a tree or one that had been shot. As a rule, the report would be received a day or two after the incident happened. However, in the case of the Cantrell women, the report did not reach the Rangers until a couple of weeks or more after the hanging. When my husband's party went to get the bodies, they found the bodies on the ground, but their heads were still held by the noose of the rope. These bodies had remained until decay had caused the bodies to separate from the heads. The Cantrell women were buried in a cemetery at Springtown. The graves were under a tree, and Rangers tied the rope, with which the women were hanged, to a limb over the graves, as a marker for a rustler's grave. My husband was mustered out of the Ranger service in 1875. We then made our livelihood by farming in the Ash Creek vicinity near what is now call Azle, Texas." ---------- > From: TXPARKER-D-request@rootsweb.com > To: TXPARKER-D@rootsweb.com > Subject: TXPARKER-D Digest V99 #81 > Date: Saturday, July 31, 1999 2:20 PM >

    3. Kay, Are you the Kay Davis that is on my McALISTER line? Just curious? Since my computer crashed and I lost a slew of messages, etc. I'm constantly confused. :( > I have not talked to or written you in a long time, but I too am >interested in the "Wright Cemetery" on the Porter Ranch. Although I am >from the area, I don't know where the Porter Ranch is, but I too have >two greatgreat grandparents that are buried in the Northwestern part of >the county, and probably on the ranch where they lived. I've been to the Porter Ranch but it was a few years ago. The gate was locked and it took a while to find someone who could get us in, but Evelyn at the library finally succeeded. The only graves at the time that I was interested in were those of John Reed MITCHELL, his wife, Ann Eliza "VARDY" MITCHELL and their son, John Arthur MITCHELL. John and Ann are my g grandparents. My Grandpa, Charles Franklin, was their only surviving son to carry on the MITCHELL name. I believe John Reed and his first wife, Mary _?_, may have a son, William, buried there. I may have relatives on my Grandma's side buried in Parker Co. but I don't have a clue as to where. The surname was ARDREY and I can't find John, Milton, Betty, or Ann. . Also, gg grandma by the name of Elizabeth WILSON. They were living in Parker Co. in 1880 Census. Charles F. Mitchell married Jennie Ardrey in Pottowatomie Co., Okla. Terr. in 1897. They settled in Jack Co. TX for a while before crossing Red River into the Chickasaw Nation about 1906. > Maybe you know of several private burial sites. I could use help on this from >you or anyone. Wish I did since some of my family may be in a private site. Sorry I couldn't help. Hope someone else did. Virginia

    3. Hi again: In my original query I said I didn't claim the family as my ancestors. Well, that was a hasty comment. I do claim them. And, guess I'm not ashamed of them either because it was them not me that did those things. Just that I don't intend to boast about 'em. And, I didn't say in the original query why they were killed by the vigilantes. One article I read said that it is suppose to have been the largest number of women ever lynched in the United States. Anyway, as I understand, it was because of prostitution, wild parties, infanticide, cattle thieves, horse thieves, going into town shooting people and hiding known outlaws such as Sam Bass and others. Guess the only thing I haven't heard that they did was rob a bank. They must have been too busy for that! Also, I have been told the vigilantes killed them because the women did not discriminate concerning the skin color of their "clientele". The Hill women's story is certainly one that even Hollywood could not dream up! And, a true one at that! As fascinating and colorful as the whole story is..... Who was Allen C. Hill? Was he really married to Ladusky or whatever she called herself? What was her surname? Thought there might be some Parker County residents whose families have been there for generations that might know about the Allen Hill family or heard more details about their story. Just as my family has been here five generations and I grew up hearing stories about this areas families. Thanks for listening. 2. Linda, I am a Hill descendant, my John Rhoten Hill was in Parker co , he was a Methodist minister from NC. I believe some of the Hills there were his kin, although I haven't researched them yet. That is very interesting article you sent in, I would like to know more about them if you have the newspaper clippings to post. My 3rd GGF Morgan Miller and two of his sons were supposedly hung in Nacogdoches co TX as horse thieves. I know what you mean , but they were our family. I just omit the bad parts :) If I ever find anything on your Hills, I will send. I go to Parker co. at least once a year. maybe I can find something next time. Pat in Lawton, OK

    3. Hi to everyone: I am searching for more information concerning Allen C. and "Dusky" Hill and their ancestors. Allen C. Hill was born about 1814 in Alabama and died 1863 Parker Co., TX (shot by vigilantes near Springtown). He married, or lived with, Ladusky/Laduska/Dusky/Duska. Her surname is unknown but may have been HOWARD. She was born about 1826 possibly in TN. and died 1873 in Parker Co., TX by hanging at hands of vigilantes near Springtown. Their children included: Nancy b. 1848 TN & d. 1873 Parker Co., TX (hung). One of Nancy's boyfriends was supposed to have been Sam Bass. She was to have killed more than one person including her own newborn.; Martha b. 1851 MO & d. 1873 Parker Co., TX (hung); C. "Jack" b. Ark. D. 1870 in gunfight in Montague Co., TX; Katherine b. aby. 1853 TX & d. 1873 Parker Co., TX (hung); Allen C. Jr. b. TX arrested for murder in 1881 in Palo Pinto Co., TX. and later killed by gunshot.; Adelaide b. abt. 1856 in TX and d. 1873 Parker Co., TX (hung); Elize b. abt. 1857 TX d. 1873 Parker Co., TX (shot or hung by vigilantes) and Isabelle "Belle" b. 27 April, 1860 TX and d. 28 Dec., 1925 in Lake Co., OR. mar'd John C. VINYARD. I am a great great grand daughter of "Belle", the only surviving child of Allen and Ladusky. I've read a couple old newspaper clippings about the family and the hangings. Also, an article in a 1966 issue of THE OLD WEST magazine about the story. I've noticed there are numerous Hill families in that area in that time period. But, no idea if or how they're related to Allen Hill. This family is not one that I would claim. But, they are my ancestors. I do not condone their activities. Quite the opposite. I would like any information, folklore or otherwise, about this family. It will be appreciated. Thank you. At that time I asked Evelyn at the library about it and she said "oh yes, we know all about that cemetery" and seemed to indicate it had been documented. I noticed a few years later an historical marker was placed on the road at the site of the entrance (you can't see the cemetery from the road but there is an oil company road that goes up the hill past it). There used to be some kind of old building near it (the cemetery) and it had an iron fence around it if I remember correctly. I still own a home just a couple of miles from there but am living in GA now or I'd run down there and take a look. Patsy

Although I am from the area, I don't know where the Porter Ranch is, but I too have two greatgreat grandparents that are buried in the Northwestern part of the county, and probably on the ranch where they lived. The folks are John and Lucinda (Duff) Blocker. I have searched for years, lists as well as the actual cemeteries, and have decided that they are on their own property somewhere. When their daughter got married, she Lucinda (Blocker) Wolfenberger married "in her parents home near Goshen". Maybe you know of several private burial sites. I could use help on this from you or anyone. Thanks, Kay Davis
