Info below. By the way, our local Stanislaus Genealogical Society had a group of 27 in Salt Lake this week. They phoned within hours of the shooting yesterday to say that they were all safe and back in their motel rooms. I was lucky - I heard they were safe before I learned of the shooting. Some others of us weren't that lucky and had some frantic moments. Regards, Nan ======================================================= According to an MSNBC article on "A Family Tree That Spans the Net" NBC News will be airing a weeklong series on genealogy called, "Finding Our Roots," beginning on April 19. .James William "Charlie" HICKEY ....d. abt 1875, my mystery man ! I am unable to confirm the story, or where he lived, died, buried, marriage to Minerva WARD, or who his parents were. It is said that: (in the Loco, IT (maybe Stephens Co.) .. Charlie was an Indian Scout for Texas Rangers. ... Was killed approximately 1879-80 during the range wars of Texas ...Charlie and Oscar took the buckboard out to work on a fence. Charlie was killed while repairing, rebuilding or building a fence by some men who rode up on horses and shot him. Oscar was with him (approximately 5-6 years old) when it happened and saw it all. Oscar ran back to the house and told his pregnant mother. They went to the neighbors house and then all went to see what happened. Oscar's father was dead. ... Said to be Chickasaw, or Pottawatomie ------------ full or 1/2 ..."Don't fence me in" song was based on the range wars of that time. Any suggestions anyone? Karen

To All Whom It May Concern: The purpose of this message is to inform all genealogists & researchers who subscribe to TEXAS Rootsweb Lists, of a very important web site that now has a searchable database of over 1,650 U.S. Regular Army soldiers who once served at the short-lived Buffalo Barracks, between 1835 and 1846. Many of these soldiers had fought in the Indian Wars in Florida and also the War with Mexican, and then the Civil War. It is without doubt that some of the descendants of these men are most likely in every county of the great state of Texas. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT: The 1840 Census of Buffalo, NY lists Colonel James M. Bankhead, of Virginia, and a total 'quantity' of 671 individuals, ranging in age from 1 to 60, as being under his command and/or responsibility. Unfortunately, the census does not list each of these barracks residents by name....only by 'quantity.' (ie. 426 males 20-30 yrs, or 34 females 20-30 yrs) HOWEVER, The Buffalo Barracks Historical Web Site has turned most of the 'quantities' into actual names. The list of these officers and soldiers (and some of their wifes and dependants...see the Barracks Notebook section) are available, free of any charge. The URL for this outstanding web site is: [ http://www.buffalonet.org/army ] There, you will discover the "Descriptive & Historical Register Data of Enlisted Soldiers in the U.S. Army," for those who served at this federal military post on the Niagara Frontier. Also available is a wealth of rare and interesting information pertaining to the Buffalo Barracks and it's unique historic value. I encourage everyone to take the time to visit this site. Perhaps you have an ancestor who once served there? Enjoy your visit, Cliff Williams 104740.372@compuserve.com buffalobarracks@hotbot.com

I just received a warning on the AZPIMA-L rootsweb mail list about a company who has not performed as promised and thought others might appreciate the message. Greetings! I have finally copied all of the Palo Pinto County, TX census for 1900. The following are the most recent names I have found. If your particular name is not listed that means I could not find it. I had so many requests <grin> that I am not able to email everyone on their family surname. I hope you'll understand. Eventually I will attempt to transcribe the census and offer it to rootsweb or the Palo Pinto County web site. Thanks to all the kind people who offered support and appreciation! It meant a lot.
