Hello! I am new to the Palo Pinto list. I am looking for information about Tom Boggus. He was married to my great Aunt Nell Hill Boggus. They lived in Mingus for many years. I know that he was a bootlegger back in prohibition and possibly beyond. His wife, Nell Hill was the daughter of Ferd Hill, and Ada Palmer Hill. They lived in a white house up on the hill in Mingus. Tom boggus was supposed to have had a brother that lived in or close to Ranger, but I do not know his name. Did he have any other family that lived in or around Thurber, Mingus, or Gordon area? Any help would be appreciated.

I am interested in your Whatley line. My GGreandmother's Elizabeth Bowles, Young, Hittson has a sister Julia Bowles who married Martin Franklin Whatley in Waller Co. in 1875 Eilizabeth had just moved to Palo Pinto Co., when her first husband Edward William Young died in 1882. I am also trying to find his buriel. He was working for the Railroad in Palo Pinto as a Telegrapher. Probably died of Cholorea or Typhoid. He was 31 She did not marry again until 1890 when she married William Httson. I am wondering if your Whatley line is somehow related to my Whatley line. The one known child I have of Julia and Martin is Benjamin Bowles Whatley, born in 1876, named after Julia's father. There may have been others. I know nothing about Elizabeth (Bettie Jane's) life in Palo Pinto except she lived in Mineral Wells. I have photographs of her and her six children taking by "Clogersons" in Mineral Wells about 1882/83 from the ages of the children. I hope we connect. Susan Young Medford OR

Looking for Brannons that lived in Palo Pinto and Parker counties in the late 1800s. Some of them may have come before the Texas Revolution. Any descendents of Joseph B. or Harvey C. Brannon in the area? I need information on these families. Did W.R. Brannon b. 1824 in NC, brother of J.K. Brannon, live in Palo Pinto County? Any record of this family? I have found numerous land records for him and have a history of the NC family that goes back to Ireland. Will be happy to exchange information. Any record of a death for James T. Brannon b. 1854 in GA to J.K. Brannon and Sarah Emaline Martin? He was on the Polk Co., GA 1870 census but does not appear with the family on the 1880 Parker Co. TX census. Could have stayed in GA or died on the way to TX but might be buried in Parker County where the family first settled when they arrived in Parker Co. His father died in GA before the family moved west. Will appreciate any information or suggestions for researching these families. Dorothy

Tx Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/PaloPinto/10937 Surname: ------------------------- Yes, I am aware of the historical markers that are near former communities and or historical sites. I am also familiar with Peadenville. I have a daughter who lives at Graford and works at the Graford Bank. There are, I believe three, historical markers on the IH 20 frontage road at Thurber and one on SH 108 between Thurber and Mingus. My husband just recently retired from the Texas Department of Transportation after 37 years. He was the Maintenance Supervisor of Palo Pinto County for the last 14 years so I remember when he would get request for the markers. Have you heard of Mt. Zion? I am not familiar with that community.
Posted on: Palo Pinto Co. Tx Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/PaloPinto/10931 Surname: ------------------------- Yes, the coal mine area is in southern Palo Pinto County near Gordon, Strawn, and Thurber. Thurber is located on IH 20, exit 367, near the Palo Pinto County, Eastland County line. Thurber was the headquarters and reminants still exist with two resturants, The Smokestack and New York Hill are in operation. The cemetery is up on the hill behind the old Smokestack remaining from the coal mining days. The New York Hill resturant is owned and operated by members of the Gordon family who help operate the mines. The mines closed in the 1920's when oil production became more profitable than coal mining. There is also an area which was named Coalville on SH 2692 northeast of Gordon which was also part of the mining area. I am aware of members of the Patton family who currently live in the area of Perrin, which is on US 281 in Jack County. Perrin is near the Jack and Palo Pinto County line on Palo Pinto' northern border. If you are not able to find your Pattons in Palo Pinto county, it might be a good idea to check Jack and Eastland Counties since the Thurber areain near the county line. I hope this helps.
