Tx Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Orange?read=115 Surname: VIDOR ------------------------- You should contact Orange County Publishing Company, the owner of the Vidor Vidorian (newspaper). It is located on Bolivar Street in Vidor, Texas. Phone number is 409-769-5428. They have articles on this subject from way back (I used to work there). King Vidor (the movie producer) made a trip through Vidor many years ago. I believe he was in a parade during his visit. It's been a while since I read the article, but I believe there is a picture of him. If I'm not mistaken, King Vidor's father was a partner in the Miller-Vidor Lumber Company. That's where the town's name came from. Hope this helps.

Posted on: Orange Co. Tx Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Orange?read=113 Surname: ------------------------- The Southern Soldiers that fought for the South only received ONE Medal after the "War Between the States" for the sacrifices and sufferings they endured MOST of their lives! If a Soldier was still residing in this world during 1898 -1908...they more than likely received one of these "Southern Cross of Honor" Medals...finding the "Application for the Southern Cross of Honor" is a problem, or nearly impossible...SOME ARE STORED IN OLD TRUNKS IN ATTICS ROTTING AWAY....others probably have been thrown away; because a person did NOT know what they were. Tibets of information about the Orange Confederate Soldiers on these Applications, can be found NOWHERE else! Many of the Applications are in the Orange Confederate Soldiers own hand writing. Mrs. Alexander S. (Mary Ann Lamar Cobb) Erwin of Athens, Georgia, conceived the idea of the "United Daughters of the Confederacy" (U.D.C) bestowing the Southern Cross of Honor on the "United Confederate Veterans" (U.C.V., a Veterans Service Organization) while attending a "Reunion" (many times Northern Veterans attended these same Reunions; their Veterans service Organization was named: "Grand Army of the Republic", G.A.R.) in Atlanta, Georgia, in July 1898. Mrs. Erwin and Mrs. Sarah E. Gabbett of Atlanta are credited with the design of the Cross. The design was the Maltese Cross with a wreath of laurel surrounding the words "Deo Vindice (God our Vindicator) 1861-1865" and the inscription, "Southern Cross of Honor" on the face. On the reverse side is a Confederate Battle Flag surrounded by a laurel wreath and the words "United Daughters of the Confederacy to the U.C.V." Copyright was secured by the U.D.C. on February 20, 1900. During the first eighteen months of the Crosses availability, 12,500 were ordered and delivered, ALL over the South. The Medals were made of copper..not an expensive material, the Medals are hard to find today...many were pinned to the Southern Veterans chest when he left this world...the Southern Soldiers sleep with them on today! Only a Confederate veteran could wear the "Southern Cross of Honor" and it could only be bestowed through the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Money could not buy the Cross; they were bought by "Loyal", "Honorable" service to the South and were given in recognition of this devotion. Allen C. Connel Walter P. Hi, my name is Karen Gravley and I'm trying to locate information on my great-grandmother, Bertha McGill. I have found out, through a Ms. Betty Casey that Bertha McGill was buried in Evergreen Cemetery. Her date of death was 10/17/74, and her birth date was given as 10/27/87. My mother, Patsy Ruth Davis (maiden name) , is the daughter of one of Bertha's daughter's, Odessa. Bertha's other children's names are Juanita, Ivanora, and Billy (that my mother knows of). The reason I am giving this information is because I'm trying to locate any information I can in order to trace down my mother's side of my family. My mother was raised at different times by her grandmother and her aunts. I'm hoping that the obituary notice will give the names I've mentioned above, so that I know that I've located my great-grandmother and hopefully assist me on my search. If anyone can assist me, please contact me at GravleyK@aol.com. Thank you so much for any help provided. Sincerely, Karen Gravley

THERE IS STILL TIME TO REGISTER AND ATTEND THIS SEMINAR! Walk-ins welcome before 9:00 am. There are plenty of seats left. I want to remind everybody on the lists for Angelina County, Texas, and its neighboring counties about the upcoming VIRGINIA RESEARCH SEMINAR at Angelina College, in Lufkin, Texas, on Saturday, October 16, 1999. Unless all your ancestors came late enough for Ellis Island (1892), if you get back far enough in your research just about everybody has somebody who came through Virginia. Vendors are welcome. Call ahead for space. Speaker will be the well known Mary McCampbell Bell of Arlington, Virginia. Price is $45.00 which includes continental breakfast, and break snacks, and a salad and sandwich buffett lunch in the college cafeteria. She is an excellent nationally known speaker and it cost to get her to East Texas from Virginia. She will present four one hour and 15 minutes sessions on Migrations out of early Virginia to other regions and the use of Virginia records including deeds and patents, probate records and court order books and tax records with very informative and detailed handouts. Program begins at 9:00 a.m. In my other genealogy life, I teach genealogy and organize these special genealogy events at Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas, a two year community college 100 miles or a two hour drive north up Hwy 59 from Houston, Texas. While a lot of colleges are teaching continuing education/hobby courses in genealogy now, Angelina College is the only college in Texas that we know about and probably the only one between Alabama and Utah that is bringing in special speakers for fall and spring seminars and holding a three day summer conference. The dates for next summer's conference are Thurs-Sat, July 27-29. Theme is expected to be Researching the mid-1800's, the Civil War Era, if I can get enough speakers on that topic and maybe some re-enactors together. If you would like to be on the mailing list please let us know. If we do not have a good turnouts for these programs, college could decide not to sponsor them anymore. I have some areas well covered and almost nobody in some of the adjoining counties where there are apparently no local genealogy societies. Dates for the spring seminar are Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, 2000. Speaker will be Rhonda R. McClure of Florida with a variety of topics. Some speakers will speak on Friday night and some will only speak on Saturday. Mrs. McClure will speak on Friday night; Mrs Bell does not. Mrs. McClure's Friday night topics will be Organization and migrations. Saturday topics will be one session on New England research and three sessions on using computers and the internet. For more information Contact: Community Services, Angelina College, P. O Box 1768, Lufkin, Texas, 75902-1768 1-409-633-5206. The name of the lady who does registration is Susan. e-mail fkanke@angelina.cc.tx.us fax is 1-409-639-3863 Seats are still available. Walk-ins are welcome on a space available basis the morning of the seminar. You can register the morning of the conference, but it is best to call ahead so that you will have a lunch reservation. Late Registration is from 8-8:45 am with the program beginning at 9 am. with a one hour break for lunch, 12-1. If you are interested in speaking at a future conference, send a resume and a list of topics with summaries on which you speak. Speakers are by inviation. Let us hear from you if you have suggestions for future speakers or topics. We need a good turnout for these events or college could decide not to sponsor them in the future.
