I am a descendant of Nancy Elizabeth Doolen b. 1861 Navarro Co TX, married to Joe Allen Martin b. 1867 TN. In the 1880 census, at Navarro Co TX there are 4 Doolen families listed. #1. Is the family of my ancestor: living at Dist. 126, Navarro Co., TX. Sarah Doolen b. 1825 IL. She is Sarah Foster, who married William Doolen. They came from Marion Co IL to Navarro Co TX. William died 1865 in Texarkana, Bowie Co TX. In the 1880 census, Sarah Doolen, the widow, is shown with 2 kids living at home still: my ancestor :Nancy Elizabeth Doolen, and her brother Wesley Simpson Doolen. I would like to know what MORE children did William and Sarah (Foster) Doolen have??? #2. George Doolen b. 1850 IL, father born KY, mother born VA. Living in 1880 census at Dist 126, Navarro Co., TX. Wife is Sophia Swearinger b. 1854 AL. Their son is Washington Doolen, 10 monts old, born in TX. The mother of Sophia Swearinger, who is named as Mrs. Annie Gardener, is born 1816 NC,, and she is living in with them. They live 4 houses away from my other ancestor, Mary Martin b. 1825 NC, widow of William Martin #3. James Doolen b. 1841 IL, father born KY and Mother born IL. His wife is Margaret b. 1836 IL. Their kids are: John William Doolen, Arthur Doolen, Ona Doolen, Hetty Doolen, Horace Doolen, and a niece named Frances Stockton is living in with them as well, at Dist. 126, Navarro Co., TX in 1880 census. #4. Jesse H. Doolen b. 1851 IL, father born KY, mother born IL. His wife is Lucy C. b. 1850 TN, and their daughter is Florie E. Doolen b. 1879 TX. They are also at Dist 126, Navarro Co., TX in 1880 census. Jesse H. Doolen is listed as DEPUTY SHERIFF. PLEASE NOTE: Jesse H. Doolen is Deputy Sheriff of Navarro Co TX in 1880, the SHERIFF of Navarro Co, TX from 4-8-1876 to 11-1884 is EWING ERIC DUNN b. 1835 d. 1917. This above Ewing Eric Dunn is married to Rachel C. Doolen. I do NOT yet know the parents of this Rachel Doolen, but I can guess she is related to Jesse Doolen, the Deputy Sheriff. My Main Question is: HOW do these 4 Doolen households in 1880 census relate to one another? As you can see from the 1880 census report, George, James and Jesse Doolen ALL come from father's who were born in KY. Are they brothers or cousins? Who is the father of each of them? Also, each one of them was born in IL. MORE DOOLEN RECORDS: Alfred H. Doolen b. about 1840, married Eliza J. Petty 4-9-1866 at Navarro Co., TX. Sarah M. Doolen married S.T. Chambliss 11-20-1890 at Corsicana, Navarro Co, TX. NOTE: I will do a separate report about the CHAMBLISS family. Please Note: There is one other Doolen Family of Corsicana, Navarro Co, TX which is an African American family. 1880 census: The father is Umphrey Doolen b. 1842 MS, wife is Dice (Dicey) b. 1842 SC, the kids are: Dora A., Ned, and Wash. I do not know of any connection to my Doolen family. Last note of interest: James Doolen, who was a Confederate Army Vet. in TX, and later a Judge in Cottle Co., TX, is the son of William Doolen b. 1790 GA. He is related to my Doolen family, he is a first cousin to my ancestor William Doolen b. 1820 IL, who married Sarah Foster b. 1825 IL. Judge James Doolen came to Texas from Fayette Co. IL. Best regards, Lillian Kathleen Martin d/o Billy Joe Martin b. 1925 OK
