    3. I had not heard this, Janice. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. This is a disgrace & you are right - it is all about the dollar!! This is a double-do, a dollar off the dead & another dollar off the living. How very sad. 1. [TXNAVARR] Cemetery visitation day on private land is nearing
    2. DID YOU KNOW? ... If you have ancestors buried on private property or government land that the law (at least in Texas) says that you have the right to visit their graves at least twice a year (First Sunday in April & First Sunday in October) from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This year it is April 6, 2003. Section 711.041 of the Health and Safety Code provides you the rights of visitation during reasonable hours and for purposes associated with cemetery visits; however, the owner of the land surrounding the cemetery may designate the routes for reasonable access. If you cannot find the owner, or if the owner is an absentee landowner, check with the county tax appraisal office for the name and address of the owner. <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~txstc/bridge/index.html">Save Texas Cemeteries, Inc.</A> has the guidelines to follow.

Most of these bills would close or reduce access to records we use. Mic is the owner of Barnett Books and is a regular vendor at our Seminar. Last year his large area was in the middle of the vendor room. He also writes a Saturday column for the Houston Chronicle. Please read the message and get on the mail list and write letters to let your representatives know how you feel. Otherwise, we may lose even more access to the records. Thanks, James Hollas AGS President ---------------------------------------------------- Hi Everyone: As the Texas Liaison for the Joint (National Genealogical Society/Federation of Genealogical Societies) NGS-FGS Records Preservation and Access Committee I have set up both a website and email mailing list to aid us in lobbying the Texas Legislature. The Legislature currently has several bills pending which seek to close records to the public. Information about these bills is on the website. This website is a place where we can post information about particular bills and how to locate legislators to contact. The mailing list is designed as a forum for us genealogists to communicate quickly and be able to coordinate activities in quick mode should we have to do so. And we already have to do so. There is a hearing at 1:30 or whenever the committee earlier in the day adjourns- for the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee discussing SB81 and SB 85 which both want to close DD214-Military Discharge records in the county clerk's offices. The hearing will be held in the Betty King Committee Room in Austin. Anyone who attend is asked to do so I have included others from states outside the Republic of Texas in this email so they can see what we are doing here. They might wish to monitor what we do or just follow our lead and do something similar in their own state. The website is located at http://micbarnette.bravepages.com There is a page on the website where one may go to subscribe to the mailing list, however you may do so by following the attached directions The mailing list may be subscribed to by sending an email to TXLEGNOTES-L-request@rootsweb.com in the message area of the email type subscribe. There is a digest mode at TXLEGNOTES-D-request@rootsweb.com but it may be held up 12 hours before being sent. For speedier mail, at least during the legislative season when it might count, I would recommend subscribing to the L mode rather than the D mode. After the legislative season there may not be anything to say on this list. It will already have been said and voted upon. The basic things to be concerned with at his point is about 8 bills pending in the House and the Senate which aim to close DD214/Military Discharges in Texas. Plus two new bills, one in the House and one in the Senate wanting to extend the time birth records are closed in Texas from 50 years to 75 years. Plus a bill wanting to close marriage applications to the public. Plus TEXSHARE/TIFF funding for schools and libraries and electronic database access. Plus HIPPA which I don't know much about but which is expected to go into effect April 14 and will probably close records which have medical records or information in them. This bill effects insurance and medical companies and offices. I remember hearing some people talking about this last week they were not into genealogy. Now I have had someone in a county clerk's office ask me about the same thing and said it may affect their records. So, we may have to address this problem, too. The whole crux of closing public records is all about Identity Theft and the fear of it. People feel that if a record is available for use someone must be stealing their identity. So, Identity theft and how to protect public records from thieves and convince public officials not to pass laws closing them is going to be our goal at least as I envision it. Please pass this email to everyone in every society. We will need some some numbers to show the legislature we care. We are starting late in the legislative season and are therefore already behind. Thanks, MIC -- James Hollas 7704 Evaline Ln Austin, Tx 78745 (512) 280-1415 ------=_NextPart_000_00A5_01C2EDAE.F5E03840--

    3. There's an item up for bids on ebay right now that's said to be a daguerreotype of Joseph Young Roberts ca. late 1860s. 1. [TXNAVARR] William Smith family from Limestone co TX 1860- Navarro co TX 1880
    2. Prechan
    3. I am searching for descendants of William Smith, who evidently died just before the 1880 census . I found him on the 1860 census but I haven't found him on the 1870 TX census as of yet. I also would like information on the family of Morgan Miller and his descendants.. 1860 Limestone co census P.O. Personville William Smith age 22 born TX Lucinda Smith wife age 17 born LA John W. Smith son age 9mo born TX Lucinda was the daughter of Morgan Miller and Elizabeth Smith ? from Claiborne Parish LA to Nacogdoches co 1850 . 1860 Limestone co census Elizabeth Miller head of household age 44 b IL Sarah E. My 3rd GGF was Morgan Miller listed in my query. His daughter Eliza married Joshua Haworth Wright in Andersoncounty TX, settled in Bell co where they lived until death. My main purpose behind my query is to find out what happened to Morgan Miller and his sons John and Benjamin. They disappeared between the 1850-1860 census. I had an elderly cousin since deceased who told me that they were hung as horse thieves. Evidently something happened as I have searched over twelve years without a clue. The other son Gilbert was on the 1860 Limestone co census , enumerated with another family as a hired hand. He is again listed on the 1870 McLennan co TX census with his wife and mother Elizabeth, then he disappears. I am hoping to make contact with descendants of Morgan Miller , hoping someone else knows this story. Many Thanks, Pat in OK

    1. [TXNAVARR] Look-Up
    2. Is there anyone who will do a look-up for me in Panola County, Texas? I need the birth date and middle name for Robert W. Caston. The middle name is probably Walton but I'm not sure. Robert was born in Carthage, Panola County, in the early 1950's. His father was Luther Preston Caston and his mother was Kathryn Jeanne Walton Caston. I don't need a copy of the birth certificate. I just need the date Robert was born and his middle name. He probably didn't attend school in Carthage because the family moved to Longview possibly before he was school age. I appreciate any help anyone can give me. Anne Walton Wilson 7 Thirsk Lane Bella Vista, Ar. 72714 479-855-9686 anne-wilson@juno.com

    2. Edward L. Williams
    3. Thanks for the Feedback and Ideas for the Navarro County Classmates Project Every response has been postive and some folks are already wanting to sign up. Because of the postive feedback received, I am going to give this a shot. I have set up a series of Navarro Classmates Pages at the Navarro County TXGenWeb site (by school, then year, then last name). eMail address will be JAVA SCRIPT ENCODED to protect them from Web Crawlers that browse around scrapeing eMail addresses for SPAM (or Junk Mail) I personally feel this is a good thing for promoting interest in Genealogy as well as finding old classmates. Find a classmate, find pics of the old schools, home town, and pics of Uncle Bob at the same site ! What a better way to get others to join in with this hobby and promote interest in Navarro County history. We can also post short notes for classmates who have passed away or links to Biographies or Obituaries posted at the Navarro County TXGenWeb. >From other sites, I have located several cousins and swapped information, thanks to similar contact lists. I hope this works out well and that we get as good of participation as the "Pay For" sites. PS: If you want to post a note with out your eMail address, we can do that as well; such as "Married Bob Jones, Living in Utah" for example. Edward L.
