I am looking for information about Peter VALLIE/VALLY/VALLEY/ b. 1834 Canada and d. early 1900's. He was married 1855 to Sarah ROBERTS and had at least 10 children named Lillie, Matilda, Minnie, Rose, Emma, Mamie, Walter, William, Frank, Arthur. He married (2) in 1888 in Navarro Co., TX to Georgianne CARRIER. They had at least 3 children. Would like to know names of second group of children, when died and where buried, and any other information you might have about this family. I believe the older children all were in Navarro County at one time. Thanks very much for your help. Barbara

I certainly appreciate your lookup for me, and you have provided more names for me to check on. According to the Navarro Co website, online records, I found William Doolen mentioned as an Early settler of Navarro Co in 1853. The Navarro Co census as of 1860 shows William Doolan, wife Sarah Foster, and all their children to that date. The last name was mis-spelled as "Dooland". Pretty close, but no cigar. The 1880 census at Dist 126, Navarro Co TX also shows 4 households named Doolen which are all related to William Doolan. I do happen to know that Swearinger and Young and Cunningham married into the Doolan family, so I can now persue those names more. If you are related to Martin, Doolan, Donaho, Swearingen, Cunningham, and Young in Navarro Co TX then write back and I can share information with you. This pattern of moving in groups (from NC to TN, from TN to TX) makes a lot of sense when you think about it: you get mutual support, mutual trust, and the comfort of familiar faces - all pretty important when you don't have banks, phones, ambulances or Wal-mart. What I'd like to know is how the destination got chosen: why did Lily's Martin families go to Navarro specifically? Why did they move at all? My general impression of why people left North Carolina was that they were seeking free or cheap fertile land. That was probably the reason another generation took off for Texas, and although it's possible that the aftermath of the Civil War in Tennessee also drove people out. Any "why they came to Texas" stories around? My guess about my gg-grandfather, by the way, is that he had been the minister for some of the families who went to Blooming Grove and they invited him - by then a widower, age 79, but vigorous - to lead worship and perhaps organize some camp meetings in the new territory. Somebody here suggested that one of his children invited him to Blooming Grove. Makes sense, but I can't find any trace of same there ... yet.
Absolutely. Just go to their website -<http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/pbl.html> and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Be merciful. As far as I can tell, these are people who have to make a living elsewhere and are probably ministers as well. The library is a labor of love. The URL for the Primitive Baptist Library is: <http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/pbl.html> but just typing "Primitive Baptist" into Google will get you a world of information.
I owe the Primitive Baptist Library in Illinois a lot: they were the ones who dug up this short autobiography of my gggrandfather that mentions Blooming Grove. They have wonderful things if you have a Primitive Baptist connection in your family. It's interesting to learn that so many people from Tennessee came to Blooming Grove(and Texas in general). It's possible that my ancestor may have participated in two big migrations in his lifetime: he was born in North Carolina and was part of a big migration from there in Tennessee in the 1840s.
Thomas W Rascoe [aka Roscoe], my g-g-grandfather was a Primitive Baptist minister from central Tennessee. In 1886, when he was 79 he wrote a brief autobiography for a religious publication and gave his address as Blooming Grove, Texas. (In 1880 the Federal census had found him in Williamson Co, Tennessee.) What was he doing out in Blooming Grove six years later? Could he have died there? (I've never found a record of his death or burial). Could a group of people from one of his congregations have gone there? I'd be very grateful for any thinking-out-loud that anyone acquainted with this region would like to share. (I'm from California myself and have never been in any part of Texas, alas)
Lilly, I looked in the "Navarro County History" Vol. #1 that I have and found only one mention of the "Doolen Family" being in the County, in the article about John R. Ransome, who arrived in 1862 and was the "Tax Collector in 1885", now I don't know if they both arrived at that time or if the "Doolen's" were there in 1885. The other names mentioned were; Hammonds, Cunninghams, Whites, Pughs, Storys, Garners, Swearingens, Lynns, John Samuel Young, Megaritys, Dicksons, Carpenters, Greys, Loves, Hendons and Littles. Hello, My ancestor is William Doolen b. 1820 IL. He arrived in Navarro Co TX as of 1853. I need some help! He died in Texarkana, TX. in 1865. I need to find his death record, to find his Father's name. His wife and children all lived in Navarro Co TX, and are all show there, in 4 households in the 1880 census. As far as I know, they did NOT live in Texarkana, he only died there, from what cause, I don't know. Are there any resources in Navarro Co, perhaps History books, which might say WHO the father of William Doolen is??? I believe he is the son of Rev. Jesse Doolen of Marion Co IL, but some have disputed that, and unless I find a death record, or a history book which might refer to his father, I am stuck. Concerning Texarkana, TX: I will write to the library and see if they have old death records which go back to 1865. If anyone has suggestions or further information please write back to me. William Doolen is mentioned in the History book for Navarro Co TX, as one of the early settlers. I have a list of all his kids, and some grandkids. Best regards, Lillian Kathleen Martin

Hello Jane, I have a couple of surnames that match yours -- My Browns came from Lauderdale County Mississippi before and after the Civil War. Looney's are a distant connection on the other side. My Looney's were in Cherokee County, Texas, in the mid 1800's. As far as I know those two lines are not connected. Any matches? Greetings, again; I've just uploaded another ten pages of the 1955 Corsicana Phone Book my husband scanned for me, to the Image Event site. All the white pages are posted, now; next, we'll do the yellow pages. I'm just glad my grandmother and mother hung on to the books and didn't throw them away. Does anyone know if there is an institution back there that might like to have the phone books, once my husband has finished scanning them? Here's the link again, and thanks so much for all the responses; sharing is what both my husband and I like to do. http://ImageEvent.com/fruge_adams/oldtexasphonebooks/1955corsicanatexas Cherié Frugé (and husband, Bruce Adams) cherie_f@cableaz.com
