Thomas J. was my ggggrandfather. Lizzie's brother William (Will) was my gggrandfather. His son Dewey was my ggrandfather, who had my grandfather Charlie, from a very shortlived marriage. Lizzie did in fact marry James Madison Witherspoon. Here are pension records CSA: [Reasearching Shelby County Civil War records show the following: bjw]: NAME: Witherspoon, James Madison BORN: 11/17/1837 Tennessee DIED/BURIED: 01//31/1908 Tenaha Cemetery, Shelby County SPOUSE: Lou Elizabeth m. 01/01/1880 Panola County SERVICE: Private Co. K. 4th Tennessee Regiment Infantry. Enlisted 05/15/1861. Discharged 01/14/1862 was promoted to Lieutenant and then Captain. PENSION: #11738 PARENTS: William F. And Mahala Caroline Witherspoon COMMENTS: County resident since 1881 NAME: Witherspoon, Lou Elizabeth BORN: ca 1858 Bienville Parish Louisiana DIED/BURIED: 07/07/1939 Nacogdoches County, SPOUSE: James Madison Witherspoon m. 01/01/1880 Panola County PENSION: #18368 COMMENTS: Texas resident since 1876 she is buried in Mount Bethel Cemetery, Panola County: [UPDATE: 22 June 2004, Mt. Bethel Cemetery visit. The picture of her stone did not turn out. It said "Lizzie Witherspoon" and dates. It was a footstone. I'm not sure she was buried there. It was beside James Ollen and Julia, to the left of them as you look at their stone. Need to retake pic. bjw]
