My gggrandmother was Elizabeth Lilly, married first to William Lilly in Alabama. He died in 1841. After that time, she moved to Texas in about 1850 with her son John Jones Lilly, and remarried to a George Massingill. They lived in Nacogdoches. Have been looking for her place of burial and have not found it in Nacogdoches County. Someone suggested that they had moved to Angelina County. Does anyone have George's obituary? Thanks Sue L. Wright >> Sue, The short answer is-George Washington MASSINGILL's obit did not survive within my family. May I quote two paragraph's from Land of the Little Angel, A History of Angelina County, Texas, edited by Bob Bowman, compiled by The Angelina County Historical Survey Committee, published in 1976, pages 291 and 292, George Washington MASSINGILL. "When the M. clan members, led by GW M., arrived in Texas in 1937, they chose homesites in Shawn Prairie."..... "MASSINGILL's second wife was Mary Jane Lilly, of Nacogdoches County. Their children were Elizabeth (Betty), who was born in 1863 and married Robert BIRDSONG; Rebecca G., who was born in 1864 and died while an infant; Narcissus, who was born in 1866 and died while an infant; John Monroe, who was born in 1867 and married Sarah Lilla DURERETT; Laura Lee, who was born in 1869 and married John FREEMAN; Newton, who was born in 1871 and died while an infant; P. Jasper, who was born in 1973: Edward (Ed) L. who was born in 1878 and married Annie AYERS; David Word, who was born in 1882, and married Cora Saint J0HN." "In 1882, Mary Jane LILLY, gave birth to David Word MASSINGILL. A few weeks later she was sick with the measles. When she died, Aunt HALEY, (no relation) took Word to nurse with her son, Bud, who was the same age. Because babies often died of "summer complaint" diarrhea, she nursed Word until he was eating solid food (about 20 months old) before returning him to the family." Sue, I hope you find the above paragraphs interesting. Have you checked Walker Cemetery, Angelina County, for MALM's place of burial? Happy Hunting, Betty Cole Wienke [email protected]
