Shelby County Historical Society News Update! * Progress is being made on the locating of lost cemeteries of Shelby County. This weekend volunteers located, photographed and inventoried three lost cemeteries. Ray Jackson with ROOTSWEB will be placing them on their site in the near future. Through guidance and information from the Texas Historical Commission in Austin, we are making great gains in this field. * By the end of the month, the GPS/GIS inventory system should be up and running at the Society. Trimble Navigation will be assisting in the final layout and startup so all cemeteries in Shelby County may be permanently located. A special thanks to Dr. Jere Jackson and the Center for East Texas Studies for helping make this possible. * Preceptor Upsilon Sorority made a generous donation to the Capital Campaign 2001. Through their donation we are presently at 21% of our goal of $19,500. Our first item on our campaign list can be marked off - a new copier! It was purchased last month with funds raised thus far. Thanks to everyone who has helped thus far in our fundraising efforts. Item #2 is a new roof for the Museum building. * Volunteers are continuously receiving items to add to the Society's museum collection. Books, family histories, photographs, clothing, mementos, and much, much more. If you have a treasured family item that you would like to share and preserve for future generations to enjoy, please contact Chris Mahan at the museum. * March 3rd will mark the evaluation and review of the Society's Policy & Procedures' Manual. Through a special grant from the American Associations of Libraries and Museum a MAP I grant was received in 1999. The final step is the review process. Thanks to all of the volunteers for their extra dedication and hard work. * New exhibit under construction: "A Look Into a Turn of the Century Classroom" Contact Reba James, Ray Jackson, Chris Mahan or Debbie Askew on a list of items still needed to complete the exhibition. * NEXT MEETING OF THE SOCIETY, FEBRUARY 22ND.
