My husband's folks, the MARTINs came from Henry Co., TN to Shelby County and Nacogdoches Co., TX. The STRIBLINGs were from GA. They had been in Wilkes Co., Oglethorpe and Meriwether Co., before coming to St. Augustine Co. (just across the river) from Nacogdoches. In fact, there used to be a bridge across the river which separated the MARTIN property from where the STRIBLINGs lived in St. Augustine County. I understand that the bridge no longer exists. The MARTINs were in the Attoyac area of Nacogdoches County. The STRIBLINGs were living in Chireno at one point, as one of the STRIBLING daughters was born there. My SIL and I had looked for early information on our STRIBLINGs at the courthouse in Nacogdoches County several times before driving to the courthouse in St. Augustine. That is where Gr-grandfather William Edward STRIBLING married and died. Glad we finally moved on to one of the neighboring counties. Crawford County, Georgia is the county just southwest of Bibb County, Georgia where Macon is located. Many people left Georgia and went to Texas to either get free or cheap land before the Civil War or to start over again after the Civil War because they lost everything in the War. Doyle T. My Roberts line migrated from VA to TN to LA to TX. My ggggggrandfather John Roberts, brother of Elisha Roberts was born in TN. He later migrated to St. Tammany Parish (later known as Washington Parish), LA when their father George Roberts migrated to LA where he died. Elisha Roberts migrated to St. Tammany Parish via Kentucky where he married Martha Patsy Gill. John Roberts' son, John S. Roberts eventually made it to Washington Parish after the War of 1812. He later was Sheriff in Natchitoches Parish, LA. He later went on to Sabine, then San Augustine, then ended up in Nacogdoches. His uncle's (Elisha Roberts) branch of the family settled in San Augustine. Lisa Webb Dodson Researching: ROBERTS, FINLEY, COBB, WEBB, NEELEY, FORD
My relative, Theressa Jane Thomas Singleton, was in Nacogdoches Co. in 1880. Her husband had left her and she had 5 children still at home and a grandson living with her in the household of Robert and Emma Wood. If anyone can help me with a connection to this family, I would appreciate it. I feel as if there is some reason Theressa went to Nacogdoches Co. Tx. She married in Barbour Co. Al., then to Bossier Parish La., then Polk Co. Tx. and then to Jasper Co. Tx. before moving and dieing in Nacogdoches. The family names involved were Singleton, Thomas, and Hagler that I am aware of. I know my Sharp's came from Stewart county Ga, and were in Clarke county Al after the civil war. They left Clarke county or the town of Coffeeville Al in the fall of 1877. They were on a wagon train pulled by oxen. There were supposed to be 49 people on the train. The Joshua A Sharp family , some Whites, The Elisha Roberts Family some of the Bussey family and others. They arrived in Angelina county in Dec of 1877. My great grandfather Frank Sharp left Angelina and went to Natchidoches in 1883 after his dad died. I think my g-grandmother is buried in Natchidoches county but I havent found where yet, her name is Mary Sharp, I think around Chierno she would have died before 1900. Hope this will help someone. Shasta, Is there a list somewhere of all the people who died in the Galveston Storm? We watched a story about it on ABC the other night. Maybe online there is a place to find that list. My cousin found a list of the sailors who were on the USS Cyclops that disappeared in the Bermuda triangle during WWI by searching the internet. My granduncle was on that ship. Hope you find something. Since there are so many nice books written containing information about early settlers to the Nacogdoches, Cherokee, Shelby, and San Augustine Co. areas, most folks find their ancestors who were here fairly easily. What is hard is finding them where they came from before they got here. I'm sending a list of my direct line locations just before Texas. Dear j- My last name is Lee, and I have hit a dead end looking for info. about my grandfather's ancestry. His name was James Calvin Lee; he looked very Native American, but refused to divulge any family info. at all to any of his children. My dad knew that grandpa had a brother, and two sisters, who drowned in the Galveston flood in 1900. A cousin believes that grandad was Cherokee; my father says that he lived with an Indian tribe who saved him from drowning while trying to cross the Sabine River. I know that he (grandad )was born in Nacogdoces area -probably arond 1880-1890. Any ideas?
.... Juanetta, as a matter of fact, if I may be allowed to vent here, a similar thing happened to me just last week. A lady wrote me asking if Talitha Cloud, wife of Isaac Cantrell, who lived in the 1700's was in my line. I wrote back: "No, but my daughter is named Talitha .... the name can be found in the 5th chapter of Mark". She then proceeded to write to the Cloud research list that she had written "someone" about Talitha and that the person had not answered her but had replied with some reference to the book of Mark. This caused a stir about who the unhelpful wretch was (... me!). Yet, I had answered her question -- perhaps my additional comments about my daughter, Talitha, and the origin of the name confused her .... but how ? .... and why did she not just write me back if she was confused rather than tattling to the entire research group ?? I must confess that my first reaction was to respond in a rather unkind manner, but I decided that she either did not read what I wrote carefully or may have a difficult time understanding written information. Who knows ?? Juanetta, I've not corresponded with you before, nor do I know the specific incident you refer to, but be assured that I too have felt the bite of the unkind person and know what you're going through. May I please offer you a little comfort and encouragement. Please don't let the few take from you the joy of participating and helping others. .... and try not to think too unkindly of them -- I've found that many of those that write unkind things didn't mean them the way they sound (perhaps they just didn't use the proper phrasing or didn't proofread what they'd written before sending it), and many others don't take the time to understand what you may have written or the reason you wrote it and yet they make a hurtful reply. These had come to me for free and I had attempted to be helpful and send them on to all of you. It was something that was FREE for 10 days. You didn't have to belong to anything to get it or use it for the 10 days. Some have been very greatful for this. Others of you apparently didn't want any free help and have told me so in very unkind and explicit terms what I could do with my free help. I too will quit receiving this in another 6 days as I didn't register for it or anything of the sort.So rest assured unless someone asks for something from now on I won't send anything.
