    2. Richard Sharp
    3. George was bn Feb 20, 1841. I think he was from Al, but apparently his folks had came to La, before coming to Natcogdoches County Tx. He joined the Confederate Army there in Nat. county in Feb 1865. He served then in 1871 he married Malissa McCoy from San Augustine county. I feel his family was there in Natcogdoches county and I have tried to find a 1860 and 1870 census but have not been able to do so. Do any of you know where I can see these census, or could someone do a lookup for me. He stated when he joined the Army he was from La. I have found some Carletons in La. One family said that some of the sons had gone to East Texas abt 1860. The three brothers who came to East Tx were Columbus, Henry Harrison and Joseph Carleton. I would very much appreciate any help with this. Thanks Richard Sharp

    3. Shelby County Historical Society News Update! * Progress is being made on the locating of lost cemeteries of Shelby County. This weekend volunteers located, photographed and inventoried three lost cemeteries. Ray Jackson with ROOTSWEB will be placing them on their site in the near future. Through guidance and information from the Texas Historical Commission in Austin, we are making great gains in this field. * By the end of the month, the GPS/GIS inventory system should be up and running at the Society. Trimble Navigation will be assisting in the final layout and startup so all cemeteries in Shelby County may be permanently located. A special thanks to Dr. Jere Jackson and the Center for East Texas Studies for helping make this possible. * Preceptor Upsilon Sorority made a generous donation to the Capital Campaign 2001. Through their donation we are presently at 21% of our goal of $19,500. Our first item on our campaign list can be marked off - a new copier! It was purchased last month with funds raised thus far. Thanks to everyone who has helped thus far in our fundraising efforts. Item #2 is a new roof for the Museum building. * Volunteers are continuously receiving items to add to the Society's museum collection. Books, family histories, photographs, clothing, mementos, and much, much more. If you have a treasured family item that you would like to share and preserve for future generations to enjoy, please contact Chris Mahan at the museum. * March 3rd will mark the evaluation and review of the Society's Policy & Procedures' Manual. Through a special grant from the American Associations of Libraries and Museum a MAP I grant was received in 1999. The final step is the review process. Thanks to all of the volunteers for their extra dedication and hard work. * New exhibit under construction: "A Look Into a Turn of the Century Classroom" Contact Reba James, Ray Jackson, Chris Mahan or Debbie Askew on a list of items still needed to complete the exhibition. * NEXT MEETING OF THE SOCIETY, FEBRUARY 22ND. 3. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------090B10320596812FD0E4AE84 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I just received the quoted email from your organization and I was amazed at the information that the Rushing Autobiograph has been donated by Patsy Maxey of Zwolle,La. What prompted me to send you this email is the story behind how a lot of folks came to be in possession of that autobiography. About 40 years ago, my Mother handed me several pages of legal sized paper and told me to keep them. She told me that she had gone to a reunion of the Rushing family and that the attendees had been given a copy and the one she handed me was her copy. My Mom and Dad were both born and reared in Shelby and Panola counties and were friends of the Rushing family. The reason she gave the papers to me was because I was the only one of 8 children that was interested in family history. Now skip forward to the year 2000. I had many times thought of throwing out that autobiography since I had no way of knowing who might be interested in it or where they might be, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. After I found the Shelby County Historical Society on the internet, I saw a query about a Rushing surname and this triggered a thought in me....why don't I scan that autobiography, run it through my OCR program and send it to this person? I did just that and it then triggered requests from a number of other people for a copy ( I suppose that some thought that I had copyrighted it and so referred others to me instead of just forwarding it). Everyone who read it saw something of great interest in J.B.'s description of life in the 1800s and the migration routes to Texas. Somehow I never thought of sending you a copy but I am glad that Patsy Maxey did so. It makes me feel good that the papers I had so often thought of throwing away finally been of use and interest to some others. I live in Fort Worth and retired from General Dynamics in 1992 after 36 years of employment there. I used to spend some summers in Joaquin as a child. I had many relatives there. I went to a Walker cousin's reunion in Center last October. There are still seven of us left, the oldest is 94 I think. Thanks for your time, Lannie G. Walker,Sr. [email protected] P.S. I have created a CD (I was a computer engineer in my working days) of my family; sort of "web site on a CD". Of course it will never be absolutely complete, but it now contains a lot of my papers, etc. My plan was to create a "page" (an HTML file) for each individual who lived long enough to contain something more than just date of birth and death. I tried to start from my immediate family and work upward and outward. I have also just "dumped" a lot of miscellaneous documents, letters, etc. onto the CD that one would never see by just navigating the hypertext (hot) links, so one would have to do some navigating the CD by using Windows Explorer or some other "File Manager" type program; opening files and viewing the contents for things that might be of interest to anyone. I also ,anged to obtain voice clips of all of my immediate family except one brother who died before I could record him. I obtained my Mother and Father's clips in 1955 and two sisters in 1957. The rest I made in 1999. The CD is an "AutoPlay" type; just place it in the cd drive tray and close it and from ther it is all mouse clicks to navigate. I am not attempting to force one upon you but if you think that there may be something of interest to anyone on it, I would send you a copy, no expense to the society. Gee whizm the P.S. is getting longer than the message body, so that's it. Shelby County Historical Society wrote: > > Recently Donated by Patsy Maxey of Zwolle, LA > "Autobiography of JOHN B. 3. Sorry it took me so long to reply...been really busy... Anyway, I don't recognize the name John Tarpley Holland, but that doesn't mean he's not related. I've been researching the Holland name for about three years now, and much to my distress I haven't been able to get any further back that my gg-grandfather William T. Holland. William T. was from Georgia and died in Tyler County, Texas in 1866. His son Mitchel G. Holland was the one to move the Etoile area. William had three other sons, Council O. born in Dec 1861, who settled in Shelby Co, and eventually moved to Nacogdoches Co with his son (also named) Mitchel, Benjamin who I believe may have died because he disappeared after the 1870 Tyler County census, and William T. jr who remained in Tyler County. Mitchel G. had fifteen children (which seemed to be the norm in the Holland family). The boys were: Willie, Wiley, RD, John Taylor (my grandfather), Oliver, and Kelly- It is a possibility, I suppose that John Tarpley belonged to any of those children (except John Taylor), but I haven't found him. I do know that across from the Sam Rayburn River there is a road there with a cemetery at the end of it, I believe it is named Holland something or other. My grandmother says that those Hollands are not related to us, but I am not so sure... As a matter of fact, I have some of those grave inscriptions that I haven't been able to make a connection to: Texas Oates Holland Dec 7, 1858-Feb 2, 1931 Sav (?) Holland Sept 1884-Nov 1917 Joe Bailey Holland Texas Pvt Infantry World War II August 20, 1920-July 29, 1958 Are you connected to any of these? Looking forward to your reply... 2. After reading "Harrah for Texas", my g-g-g-grandfather's diaries, I have some questions I'm hoping someone in Nacogdoches may have answers to. In the diaries he mentions a brother Isaac & also an Emmanuel I believe. I have been unable to uncover any more information about them. He also mentions "my adopted sister" Nancy Stevens of New Orleans. I can't find any information about her either. Thanks! Judy Jordan
