For those of you that knew him......... Funeral services for O. E. (Gene) Tannery, 80, of Conroe will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2003, at 2 p.m. in Cashner Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Bill Taylor and the Rev. A. B. Leonard officiating. Interment will follow in Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, July 4, 2003, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Cashner Funeral Home. Gene Tannery was born Oct. 8, 1922 to Clifton Wilford (C.W.) Tannery and Nannie Mae Meador in Shady Grove Community, Nacogdoches County, Texas and passed away July 2, 2003, in Houston, Texas. Gene graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University where he was Mr. SFA. He was an aviation cadet and midshipman in World War II where he was stationed in Japan. He retired from the United States Navy Reserve in 1982 as a Lt. Commander. He was a banker for First National Bank in Conroe and in 1963 was voted outstanding citizen for Montgomery County, Texas. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Conroe and a member of the Beacon Sunday school class. He was a past president for the Conroe Noon Lions Club and in 1998 they awarded him the Melvin Jones Fellowship, which is designated as the Lions Clubs International Foundation's highest honor. Gene was very involved in the Montgomery County Genealogical and Historical Society, where in 1992 he was inducted into their Hall of Fame. He also wrote a family history book entitled "The Tannery's, Young and Old", which aside from his family, was his most prized accomplishment. Gene was predeceased by his wife of 45 years Doris, and his granddaughter Suzanne Wellborn. He is survived by daughters, Patricia Wellborn and husband Gary of Spring and Sandra Bowden of Conroe; son, Greg Tannery and wife Kelly of Conroe; grandchildren, Nicole Wilson and husband Stuart of Montgomery, Sarah Wellborn and fiancé Justin Gable of Spring, Jason, Lauren, Katelyn, and Madelyn Tannery of Conroe. He is also survived by sisters, Eleanor Swearingen and husband Bill of Lufkin, Dorothy Wilkerson of Beaumont, and Delores Boyette of Beaumont. Pallbearers will be Jerry Creighton, William T. Fowler, Dick Nutter, Red Akin, Toby York, Kevin Kneisley, Doug Begin, John Burge. Honorary pallbearers will be D. B. Waller, Seth Dorbandt, James Nichols, Webb (Coach) Melder, Sr. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lions Club Crippled Children's Camp. We all love and miss you.
