For those of you who are not a member of the Montgomery County Genealogical & Historical Society, you probably are unaware of our quarterly publication, The HERALD which consists of about 48-50 pages. This is mailed all over the United States and is exchanged with many societies so it will receive a wide range of coverage. As space permits, we place queries in the issue and are currently seeking queries for the next edition. The query does not have to pertain strictly to Montgomery County. So if you would like to place a query (free of charge) please let Vera Meek Wimberly know. She can be email at: meekie@mcia.com This is what is needed for the query: SURNAME/S BEING RESEARCHED_____________________ WHERE______________WHEN___________________ WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW(be specific)___________________. I had a request from someone to do a lookup in this cemetery, but I missplaced the note, :-(. This is FYI. I had to talking to one of our charter members about orginal marriage licenses. I will check more into this. <<<<< Okay, now, Jane. Listen carefully. The Black Boxes are connected to the Probate department at the Courthouse, which is under the jurisdiction of the County Clerk. They are called black boxes because they are metal and over the years they turn black. They were, at last count, in the basement of the courthouse. In the earlier days, they were used sorta like a safe deposit box by people who came in to register wills, etc. You have to have a probate number to find whom you are looking for. We have published these records up to about 1900. And have permission to began again, but I am not able to do it, and I have not found anyone willing to do it. You will find everything in those black boxes: sometimes deeds, wills, estate settlements, sometimes marriage records - and even military stuff. Interesting stuff, and sometimes the only place a researcher will find an answer to a question regarding their ancestor. When JoAnn Freeman went in to look for something else, one time, she found there were some original marriage records. They were not put there by the county, but by the persons to whom they belonged. We thought that if we pulled all of those out, that we could do the same thing you are thinking about, send them to people who requested them. Not selling them, but giving them to researchers for $1.00 for copying and SASE. But when Imogene Kennedy, the Staff Genealogist at the Montgomery County Library found out what we were thinking of doing, she said, "No way. Those belong to the county." So, we made Xerox copies, put them in the library [they are there still if they haven't been ask for - check with Barbara][I also have a list of those copied] and returned the original certificates to the county clerk. They thanked them and didn't offer to take our society up on getting them to interested parties. Bear in mind that the black boxes did not contain all of the marriage records - just selected few. As far as I know, the bulk of the original marriage records are still in the courthouse. Where? I don't know, unless they are housed in the Marriage Records Department. Things may have changed by now. It might be a project for someone to contact the county clerk to see if this can be done.>>>> Jane Sanford Keppler Conroe, TX
I was wondering, what is going to happen to the old family cemetery inbetween the two 59 lanes by the bridge (N. Montgomery County)? I have noticed that there are markers where they are 'widening' 59, and these markers cut right through this cemetery. Can someone please shed some light on this? I am very concerned. I have recently moved to Conroe, and thoroughly enjoy the library's excellent genealogy room. I am researching any and all descendants of the KINSEL family, who moved to TX from AL after the Civil War. I have found several family members in the 1880 Montgomery County Census, however the census index has the last name misspelled as KNISEL. Before the KINSEL family moved to TX, many family members lived in Dale, Geneva, Houston, and Coffee Counties in AL, and spelled the last name KINSAUL. The family has been traced prior to the very early 1800's as living in Wilkinson County, GA, Pitt County, NC, and Queen Ann County, VA. I have found at least 17 different spellings of the KINSEL / KINSAUL last name, throughout my years of research, the different spellings are all in line with phonectical or soundex spellings, varied throughout the years, and varied to the spelling whims of many census takers and courthouses. Nowadays, the only 2 spellings that seem to have really survived, are KINSEL and KINSAUL. Generally, KINSAULs stayed in AL and NC, and the KINSELs traveled onto TX (a few have been found in LA as well). Counties that the KINSELs moved to in TX after the Civil War, include but are not limited to: Montgomery, Milam, Frio, Bexar, Jefferson, Willacy, Jim Wells, Nueces, Gregg, Harris, Jim Hogg, and LaSalle Counties. Any information on Kinsels in Texas is a possibility. Thanks. Regards, Linda Peckham Scroggs (aka: WomenFly2@aol.com)
William David MOORE married a Delilah near Dacus in about 1920. Has anyone run across these names? I do not know Delilah's last name. Regards, Linda Moore

Co??) son of Thomas Jefferson Carson and wife Catherine (King?) of TN (1830 Census). Mary Zahr married Thos. J. Carson sometime after the death of his first spouse, Mrs. Elizabeth (Vizier) Jones, widow of James Jones of MS. Mary had a father who was Joseph Zahr/Zarr from Prussia and he was a Tailor living in and near Wm. Wallace Vizier in 1870 Census in Madison Co., TX. Does anyone in Montgomery Co., TX have any links to these Zahr family members of Walker and Madison Co.,TX? They were from Prussia and probably into Galveston with a lot of other German folks before 1870. Also, William Vizer/Vizier/Viser of Montgomery Co., TX (later Walker then Madison a part) is the line I am working on here. Who are the parents of his wife, Rachel Brazleton Ford? Were they in AL and MS prior to TX? This couple lived in Madisonville, TX later and died in that locale. Elizabeth Vizier Jones b. 1830 AL...is she the daughter of Wm. Vizier b. 1794 VA who married Rachel Brazleton Ford? Elizabeth Vizier Jones married Thomas Jefferson Carson, b. 1816 TN in 1840 or 1841 in Montgomery Co., TX at Huntsville. Thomas had a brother, Hiram King Carson b. abt. 1814 TN and a brother James Carson born about 1818 TN who was in Rusk Co., TX in 1850 Census. Rev. MacDonold and wife, Margaret Grier are the parents of Sarah who married Hiram K. Carson and Tennesse who married James Carson. Hi. I'm new to this list. My grandmother's brother, John Watson Ledbetter, b 12/9/1875 in San Saba Co, married to Emily Excel Ledbetter (no kin before marriage) lived in Hazelhurst, Montgomery County in 1935. Is there anyone I could contact that could check the records there for me? I would also be interested in the Fonders Days. I live in Houston, TX. I work full time and a half so I can't help with the event but might be able to attend. Does Montgomery County have a genealogy society? Thanks. I am trying to find the maiden name of the second wife of Joshua HADLEY. She was Joyce-Joice Floyd a widow, then she married Joshua. Joshua died 1845 and she married a McGuffin. I found some thing once that lead me to believe she might be a Vick or Vickers but can't find the information again. So I need some help. I am hunting any information on who her parents were and information about them. I hope some one out there has this information. She was the daughter of James Cheshire and Susan Osborne. She was a sister to Richard J. Cheshire. I have a picture of a couple that might possibly be Elizabeth and last husband Thomas Gibson. It was in my Grandfather's things and I have not been able to find his family . I know from a Cheshire book that Thomas & Franklin P. Gibson lived with Elizabeth a widow in 1880 and then she married Thomas Gibson in the 1880 and she was older than him. My grandfather married Cordelia Cheshire who was a daughter to Richard Cheshire and SusieRabon and that would have made Elizabeth her aunt and it seems logical that Thomas would be my grandfathers brother but can find no proof. I want to put the picture on internet as I have just gotten a new scanner but will need some help getting it on since I am new to internet and not good at it yet. If you could help me , I would appreciate it so much. Thanks, Marvelyn Deatherage --part1_0.bff99745.259ec115_boundary--

Thought I'd write again re my long standing brickwall. He is ALEXANDER THOMPSON. b. ca 1797 in GA. Arrived in TX ca 1820 and was in Austin's Colony in what is now Montgomery Co. He married Asena (Massina) ARNOLD (dau of Daniel Arnold) in May 1820 and they had my gg gf Hendrick Thompson. Asena (Massina) died before Oct 1839 because in that month, Alexander Thompson married Martha BOYACAN. But then HE died before Dec 10, 1839, leaving Martha expecting their son, Richard Thompson who was born in April 1840. NEED PARENTS / SIBLINGS for my Alexander THOMPSON. I know there were other Thompsons in the area, and he surely must have been related to some of them. Any help or clue greatly appreciated. Thanks Joanne
Just want to take a moment and wish everyone of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Century Year. I sure have met a lot of very nice people on the mailing list. Hopefully after the holidays we can all settle back down to researching and take advantage of the mailing list to help get answers to some of our genealogy questions. Happy Holidays and may your stockings be stuffed with information you have been searching for. Jane Sanford Keppler sponsor for Montgomery County TX. Conroe, TX
Hi Cindy, Many thanks for your kind reply! I'm not "all" sure of anything about the "WILLIAM SANDERS" the deed refers to. But I'm "sorta" sure the property was along the San Jacinto river, and in a place where it might have been mistaken for Montgomery, Walker or San Jacinto Co. But the GenWeb archives show a William Sanders as having a head right in Montgomery co, so I think that's where it was. The deed I found was one where the 150 acre parcel owned by VARDEMAN HALSEL was being sold in 1851 by the tax collector of Walker co for non-payment of taxes. And I only found that deed by going one frame at a time thru the LDS film. Anything about the earlier deed from SANDERS to HALSEL would be very, very welcome! I would be most grateful if anyone has access to a Montgomery Co. Deed Index for a look-up on the following: WILLIAM SANDERS sold to VARDEMAN HALSEL - sometime before 1851. Described in 1851 on Walker Co records as: "a certain tract of land in said county belonging to VARDEMAN HALSEL containing one hundred and fifty acres more or less and formerly a part of the head right of WM SANDERS". I'm unable to order a copy of the deed without knowing the recording information! :-)))) thank you so much in advance for your help. Regards, Carolyn Carter Johnson (mailto:rhunterg@ix.netcom.com)
Mark your calendars for the new century. Here are the first three meetings scheduled. Robert Schaadt on Jan. 3rd from the Sam Houston Regional Archives at Liberty, Texas. The MCGHS will have its last meeting of the century, Monday Dec. 6, 1999 at 7:00PM. This will be a very short meeting to install new officers. Then we will have our Christmas social. So bring your favorite Christmas dish (might as well bring a few copies of the recipe as well. If you would please respond to me if you are attending the meeting so we can get a head count. If you are needing a Christmas gift, we still have a few afghans left for $50.00. Also, the History of Montgomery County would be very nice also, they are $22.50. Of course there are many other books available for sale. Jane Sanford Keppler Conroe, TX
