From the Wise County Messenger published in Decatur, Wise County, Texas: June 5, 1886 On last Saturday morning, Constable L. G. TEETERS of this county, GEORGE GARRISON, and a ranger, came up with JIM ST. CLAIR, an escaped convict on the West Fork near the Jack County line. Teeters commanded him to surrender, St. Clair responded by a shot which took effect in the crown of Teeters’ hat, after which firing became general, St. Clair shooting four times and Teeters and party eight times, killing St. Clair dead. It was found that several shots had hit him. St. Clair was sent up from Montague County for five years for the theft of a horse, he had served his time except for about six months. Montague, May 31--News of the killing of Jim Saint Clair by Deputy Sheriffs BILL BLACK and CHARLEY STERLING of this county and GEORGE GARRISON and Constable TEETERS of Wise County, has just reached here. St. Clair was an escaped horse thief, having been sent from this county for horse stealing. The officers came on him near his stepfather’s GREEN COMBS in Jack County. On seeing the officers, he opened fire on them. Several shots were exchanged when CHARLEY STERLING drew his Winchester, fired and killed St. Clair. The officers came out unhurt. Teeters had a hole shot through his hat.
