Dear TXMONTAG mailing list and friends, Can anyone in the Montague area provide an address for the Montague Genealogical Historical Society? I am planning a trip to this area and would like to contact someone who could help with my research. I am researching my GG-Grandfather George W. Campbell, b. 21 Apr 1839, in Adams County, Illinois, d. 04 Apr 1918, in Jefferson Co.,Oklahoma. Married 27 Aug 1861 in Saint Jo, Texas to Lucinda L. Wheeler, b. 27 Aug 1844, in Illinois, d. 15 Dec 1920, in Jefferson Co., Oklahoma. Children were, James Thomas, Charles Clayton, William David, George Andrew, Hattie Belle, John Edward, and Robert Lee. George W. Campbell was elected Montague Co. sheriff in 1880, and he served in office for two consecutive terms until the end of 1884. He was again elected sheriff in 1886 and served through 1888. His six years in office made him the longest serving of all Montague County sheriffs until the 1940s. George also served as the County Treasurer of Montague County from 1875 to 1876. He also served in the Texas Rangers Frontier Battalion, Co. C during the year 1874. IF anyone can provide any help, please contact me. Thank you and have a great day.
