She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. G. Sampson, prominent citizens of Cameron and was also one of the most accomplished and popular young ladies in the city, where she was born and had spent her life. Miss Mattie was preparing to entertain for the week a couple of young lady friends and had gone to her room to dress for their reception. On the dresser lay her father’s pistol and she attempted to place it in the drawer. In doing so it is supposed that she let it fall and it was discharged, the ball striking her in the forehead, death being instantaneous, which caused profound shock to the citizens of Cameron where she was universally popular.
