A. Carlos was called in the district court this morning, but the court was delayed a while for unique purpose. The defendant last night blackened his face with grease and charred cork, so that he looked just like a negro. This was reported to Judge Talliaferro and he ordered the defendant washed, so after an hour of scrubbing the defendant came into the court room with one eye inflamed from the effects of the soapy water, and upon the announcement of ready for trial on the part of the state, the defendant announced ready and in answer to the court’s inquiry, pleaded guilty and asked the mercy of the court. The jury found him guilty of theft of property over the value of $50 and gave him two years imprisonment in the penitentiary. Carlos is the young man who went to the office of Dr. Lott and while the doctor was out of the office took a watch from the vest of Dr. Lott that was hanging on the wall and mailed two packages immediately afterward, one to Dallas and one to Rockdale. In the latter was found the doctor’s watch. Carlos has made more than one effort to escape imprisonment, and once succeeded in getting out of the cell by means of a wire around broom handle that he utilized as a wrench. His excuse for changing his color was he feared his picture would be taken during the trial. Bob Burton pleaded guilty to an assault with intent to murder and was given two years.
