John Debourd was sitting on the head of the barrel. Ernest Ramsey and Will Cook were standing one of each side of him, leaning against the barrel. Ramsey lit a cigarette and threw the match into the hole in the barrel, igniting the gas in the barrel and caused a loud explosion. Debourd was blown several feet into the air and his skull fractured and his brains shaken. He bled at the ears and nose all night and was in terrible agony, taking several men to hold him on the bed. He is still unconscious and it is thought the chances of his recovery are very uncertain. Ramsey’s hand was burnt and he and Will Cook were both burned about the face, but not seriously.
