Galveston Daily News – Sun., 3 March 1878, p. 1, c. 3 "Another Destructive Fire" - Rockdale, Mar. 2 - About 8 p.m. yesterday night, a fire broke out in the home of John R. Giles, from the explosion of an oil lamp. The flames so soon enveloped the entire house and it was impossible to save anything. Solon Jaynes’ home soon caught and was consumed, but his furniture was saved by being removed in time. Mayor Burcke’s and Mrs. Cole’s homes were saved by hot work.
