    3. Galveston Daily News – Sat., 9 March 1878, p. 4, c. 6 Rockdale Messenger - On Monday, Rockdale witnessed a strange phenomenon. It was a shower of leaves. As far as the eye could reach the heavens above were filled with them, resembling one of the days of the grasshoppers. There was no commotion of the atmosphere to be observed in any direction on the horizon. The supposition is that they were lifted up by an immense whirlwind and carried a great distance. They were falling all day long. Rockdale Messenger - The editor paid a flying visit to Davilla. As far as the eye could reach on every side could be seen new farms being opened and new houses being built. That section is fast becoming one of the most thickly settled in our county and that by a class of people who have been drawn there by the guarantees held out in the past course of its citizens, who are temperate and law abiding, and have built schools and churches. Davilla has three churches, a Methodist, Baptist, and Christian. Prof. Ragsdale’s school numbers 130 pupils. There are 51 in the male, 36 in the female and 43 in the primary departments. All grades are taught from the a-b-c’s to the highest classics - Latin, Greek, Spanish and French. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Lynna Kay Shuffield P. O.
