SUGGESTIONS FOR FINDING A MAIDEN NAME: 1. Marriage license. 2. Her death certificate. 3. Her obituary, in case her father or any brothers survived her. Obits of other relatives, such as first cousins, aunts or uncles may give clues. 4. If death after 1934, check SSDI and get social security application. 5. Death Certificates of children may give her maiden name. 6. Bible records (look for an heir to have the family Bible). 7. Children�s marriage certificates. 8. Wills & probate records. Write local historical societies and ask for an index check. 9. Widow�s military pension applications, Widows Affidavits, for any war from which a pension was received. 10. Bounty land warrants (issued through 1858) for military service -- see National Archives Record Group 15, �Federal Bounty Land Applications�. 11. Newspaper indexes -- helpful in counties where courthouses and/or records have been lost or burned. 12. Church records or published marriage records found in books and journals. 13. Unpublished church records or marriage records microfilmed by LDS Library as well as those located in other counties and countries. 14. International Genealogical Index (IGI) on microfiche at LDS Libraries -- includes all types of records from around the world. 15. Divorce records from county. 16. Published family genealogies. 17. Biographies of individuals and their families -- check county libraries and genealogy societies for histories of families. Check for bibliographies in book form 18. Periodical literature: Journal articles, many of which are catalogued in books such as Survey of American Genealogical Periodical Annual Indexes. 19. Insurance documents. 20. Send out queries to periodicals and quarterlies in the areas where your ancestors were. 21. Deeds and other land Records. Title companies have a large amount of data on land transactions. 22. Sometimes a census will mention a Mother-in-Law.
