Shuffield” will assemble for the “Annual Shuffield/Sheffield Family Reunion” at Ben Milam Post #2010 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), 1129 North Highway 36 in Cameron, Milam County, Texas from 9am to 3pm. This year at the reunion, the Oran M. Roberts Chapter 440, United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), will be honoring six descendants of Harmon Jasper Shuffield by presenting to them the Military Service Award. The men to be honored include: David Ray Mullinax of Houston - Iraq - US Army Elmer Ray Mullinax (posthumously) - Korean War Era - US Army [died Jan. 20, 2006 and buried at Little River Cemetery] O. V. Sheffield (posthumously - killed-in-action) - World War II - US Army [remains returned from Europe and buried at Little River Cemetery] Alcy Taylor Shuffield, Jr. of Cameron - Vietnam War Era - US Air Force John Louie Shuffield of Cameron - Laos Operations - US Navy Wilburn Elma Shuffield of Temple - World War II - US Army Air Corps During the War Between the States, Harmon Jasper Shuffield served in Co. O, Phillips Legion, Georgia. The UDC Military Service Award is the most coveted award given by the organization and can only be presented to blood lineal descendants, e.g., grandsons or granddaughters of Confederate Veterans who have served honorably on active duty in the United States military. The UDC is a historical lineage organization made up of the direct and collateral female descendants of the soldiers, sailors, and statesmen of the Confederate States of America (1861-1865). The aims of the UDC, which was founded in Nashville, TN, in 1894, are to preserve and protect the historical writings of the Confederacy, the true history of its people, and historic sites of Confederate valor, while honoring the memory of those gallant boys in gray. The Oran M. Roberts Chapter has been in continual service since was chartered in 1901. The president for 2006-2008 is Major Lynna Kay Shuffield, a great-great-granddaughter of Harmon Jasper Shuffield. Mrs. Mabel Lawhon of Cameron is also a member of this UDC Chapter. Catered lunch (cost $7) will be served at noon. James S. Shuffield was married to Martha Speed Williams. There were eight children: 1) Harmon Jasper Shuffield [m. Sletha Jane McGee]; 2) Marcus Newton “Mark” Shuffield [m. (1) Virginia L. Cullins (2) Ada Marie Donaldson Shuffield Baggerly Pittman]; 3) James Shuffield [m. Mary Lou Moore Shuffield Nicholson Wingo]; 4) Emranda E. Shuffield [m. Jesse Griffin Sherrill]; 5) Sally (Mary) Shuffield [m. Columbus Clinton Hair]; 6) Newton Andrew Shuffield [m. (1) Rose Lindsey (2) Sarah Newberry]; 7) Frannie W. Shuffield [m. Jacob P. French]; and, 8) Elvira Abbie Shuffield [m. William Newton McMillan]. In about 1869, James and his family moved to Milam Co., TX from Bartow Co., GA. There is no information on the parents of James or his wife, Martha. The couple is buried in the Little River Cemetery, near Jones Prairie, with many of their children and other descendants.
