Grindle, 63, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31 at Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Rockdale. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1 in the Overton Cemetery in Overton. Public visitation was to be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Rev. Glenn Pipes, pastor of Meadowbrook, and Rev. Morris Cook of Junction, formerly of Rockdale, will officiate Thursday’s services. Mr. Grindle, who lived in Rockdale for the past 41 years, died unexpectedly at his home Monday afternoon. He was born May 19, 1939 in Henderson to Travis and Wilma Irwin Grindle. He joined the Rockdale ISD as a teacher and eighth-grade coach in 1961, became junior-high school principal in June of 1977 and retired in June of 1992 after 31 years with the RISD. A graduate of Overton High School and the University of Arkansas where he played basketball, Mr. Grindle held a master’s degree from Prairie View A&M University and a principal’s certificate from Texas A&M University. He was an active member and deacon of Meadowbrook Baptist Church, a member and two-term president of the Noon Lions Club where he was named Lion-of-the-Year in 1991-92, and received the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen Award in 1992 at the annual Chamber banquet. He was also a member of the Milam County Retired Teacher’s Association and the Milam County Child Protective Services board. Mr. Grindle was preceded in death by his wife Kay on April 24, 1992. They were married June 2, 1962 in Overton. Mr. Grindle is survived by his wife Sandra Grindle, a Rockdale ISD teacher. They were married May 27, 1995 in Cameron. He is also survived by daughters Susan Green and husband Eric of Sugarland and Sally Garcia and husband Sean of Temple; a step-daughter Amy Brenner and husband Adam of Cambridge, MA; a step-son Will Schmidt of San Antonio; grandchildren Ryan Green, Nathan Garcia and Stephen Schmidt; a brother, William Grindle and wife Esther of San Antonio; sisters LaNell Skains and husband Johnny of Baytown and Dorothy Walker and husband Richard "Zeke" of Baytown; and mothers-in-law Mrs. Charles C. Smith Jr. of Cameron and Mrs. Hazel Miller of Overton. Pall bearers will be John Ballard, John Shoemake, Billy Hall, Chuck Salmon, Albert Timmerman Jr., Stanley Betchan, Duane Vincent and Robert Moore.
