He was born January 25, 1912, in Milam County, Texas to Norman and Minnie Louisa Burnette. He was born the third of seven sons. At the age of two his family moved to Halifax, Edgecombe County, NC. At the age of 19 he returned to Milam County along with his older brother, Elloitt and a cousin. Here he met his bride, Nellie (Baskin) Burnette to whom hew was married for almost 68 years before her demise in September, 2000. In 1942 the young family moved to Houston. Robert worked at the shipyard during WW II. After the war he became employed with Humble Oil & Refining Company at the Katy facility and the family moved to the Barker/Katy area. In the spring of 1953 he accepted a transfer with Humble to South Texas (Kingsville/ King Ranch) where they would construct a larger gas plant. Later the name changed from Humble to Exxon. During his tenure in South Texas the family lived in Premont where they attended schools and church. Robert worked 32 years for Exxon before retiring in 1976. After retiring he and Nellie moved to the Cypress area to be closer to their children and other family. Robert is best known for his love of Jesus, his Redeemer, his wife and family, education, gardening and his giving spirit. He is survived by four of his five children and their spouses, 2 granddaughters, 3 great-grandchildren and two brothers. Children include his son, Robert G. Burnette, Jr. and wife, Shirley; daughters, Lydia Scrimpshire and husband, Joe; Barbara Burnette (deceased); Eudora Masuccio; Patricia Diebel and husband, Eddie. Granddaughters are Sandra Barquin and husband, Jerry of Mission, Texas and Lydia Lanell Scrimpshire-Parker of Houston. Great-grandchildren include Brittany Barquin, Brad Allen and Celieste Parker; Brothers are W. Nash Burnette of Rocky Mount, NC and Turner A. Burnette of Wilson, NC plus numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation for family and friends will be held, Friday, June 14th at Brookside Funeral Home, Champions from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Mark Perez, officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3 :00 p.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery, Cameron, Texas with Rev. Charles Alley, conducting committal services.
