(SMITTY) SMITH, was called to Heaven by our Father on August 15, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born January 6, 1929 in Bryant Station, Milam County, Texas to William Thurman and Lillie Earl Smith. Funeral Services will be Monday, August 19, 2002 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church in Rogers, Texas with Reverend Will Passmore officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 18, 2002 from 2:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. at the Rogers Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at the Rogers Cemetery. John leaves behind his loving wife of 51 years, Evelyn; his daughters, Sharon Rao and husband, Rocco and Linda Kubricht and partner, Frank; his son, Gary Smith and wife, B.J.; one granddaughter, Valerie Amonette and husband, Roy; five grandsons, Thomas Kubricht, Jonathan Kubricht, David Kubricht, Tyler Smith and Chase Smith; three brothers, Edward Smith, Bill Smith, Frank Smith and wife, Helen; his sister, Gladys Ruth Stendebach and husband, Jim; brother-in-law, Delbert Stiewert and wife, Beatrice; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. John was proceeded in death by his father, mother and two brothers, Albert Doyle Smith and Leroy Smith. John was a veteran who served his country proudly in Korea during the Korean War. John worked many years for Rainbo Baking Co. He was a distributor for the Houston Post, and operated his out trucking company until his retirement. John was a longtime Houston and Pasadena resident until his retirement at which time he moved back to his childhood home in Rogers, Texas to be near his brothers, sisters and many family members. John spent his last years raising cows and drinking coffee at the local café where he enjoyed spreading his tall tales. John was a good husband and father who taught his family honesty, strength of character and a strong work ethic. He will be forever missed by his family and friends. The family wishes to thank Dr. Frank Mott, the Cancer staff at Scott and White Hospital and Vista Care Family Hospice. Arrangements are being handled by Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple, Texas.
