Y. Norman, a constable of this (Milam) county, which occurred this morning at 10 o’clock at Clarke’s store, in the western portion of this county. The circumstances as follows: It appears that Constable Norman had a capias from Falls county for the arrest of Walter Lane, charged with cattle theft. Accompanied by Constable P. Stevens and Dan Campbell, Mr. Norman went to Clarke’s store to make some inquires about Lane and took the storekeeper out, leaving Stevens and Campbell in the store. While Mr. Norman and the storekeeper were engaged in conversation, Lane rode up, armed with two six-shooters. Norman at once attempted to arrest him and he and Lane fired, resulting in the death of both. Walter lane was a hard citizen. Mr. Norman was an excellent officer, fearless and devoted to duty. He had been constable since 1878. He leaves a wife and four little children. The citizens of Milam county mourn the loss of a gallant officer, killed in the fearless discharge of duty.
