Column 10/04/2002 "Milam County Constable Killed in the Line of Duty 1886" Sheriff Deputy Greg Kouba, who is researching the history and families of the Milam County law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty, needs your help to locate the descendants and a photograph of Constable F. Y. Norman who died on Feb. 27, 1886 when he attempted to arrest Walter Lane for cattle theft. An article in the "Galveston Daily News" on Feb. 28, 1886 stated: "Walter Lane was a hard citizen. Mr. Norman was an excellent officer, fearless and devoted to duty. He had been constable since 1878. He leaves a wife and four little children. The citizens of Milam County mourn the loss of a gallant officer, killed in the fearless discharge of duty." If you have any information, contact Deputy Kouba: e- mail < milamso@tlab.net > or telephone: 1-877-697- 7887 (toll free) or 254/697-7033 or write: 103 S. Fannin St., Cameron, Texas 76520. "Sheffield/Shuffield DNA Project Organized - Announcement" Sheffield/Shuffield families are working to find DNA cousins and establish their common Sheffield/Shuffield ancestor. Your surname can be either spelling Sheffield or Shuffield. If you are a MALE with the surname Sheffield/Shuffield, please join the Y-Chromosome DNA study. It doesn't matter if you live from California to Milam County, Texas to North Carolina, and all points in between can participate in the project. If you are a FEMALE Sheffield/Shuffield family member, please spread the work to your MALE Sheffield/Shuffield relatives. DNA projects can only track along the MALE family line from generation to generation as the male DNA does not combine the mother and father's DNA. Female DNA changes with each generation as it combines both the mother and father's DNA. The DNA sample is obtained through a cheek swab; there is no blood involved. It is done at home, not at a clinic. Why should you participate? We need to be able to better track the migration of the Sheffield/Shuffield family, to determine how family lines are allied and help families break through the brickwall of Sheffield/Shuffield family connections. For information on-line, visit < http://www.geocities.com/lks_friday/Shuffield- 001.htm > "Family Tree DNA" will provide all testing services for this project: 1919 North Loop West, Suite 110, Houston, Texas 77008, Telephone: 713/828-4200 or visit their website at: < ttp://www.familytreedna.com/ >.
